Your answer is who started the war in Syria.

So your previous president was a cock too (and the three before him come to think of it).

France has evidence of the use of chemical weapons last week by the regime of Bashar Assad in Syria, French President Emmanuel Macron said on the air of the TF1 channel.

Spoiler

« Ce que nous faisons et serons amenés à faire en Syrie, c’est d’assurer au maximum la stabilité dans la région. La France ne laissera pas une escalade se faire. Nous ne laisserons pas des régimes qui se croient tout permis agir », a continué le président français, avant d’assurer que la France prendrait ses décisions « en temps voulu […] au moment le plus utile et le plus efficace » et qu’elle agira un fois que « nous aurons vérifié toutes les informations » relatives aux « moyens d’intervention chimique » de Damas.

He also saying that:

"France will act in due time, at the most opportune moment" and that "[France] will act once we will have verified all the informations relative to the vectors of chemical attack available to the Damas regime"

So while he is clearly accusing Assad, he is also temporizing as well, leaving himself a way out (verifying the intel) just in case.

It's also worth noting that we already have one FREMM in the vicinity (which an armed SU-24 approached dangerously close while covered by a SU-30 last WE) and could potentially bring a second by 48h and a third by 96h.

The Jean Bart (AAW frigate) is also in the vicinity.

Potentially that would makes between 30 and 48 MdCN available to strike.

The only problem is that would consume 27% of the intended acquisitions and deplete the current stock almost completely in one go.

There is also the possibility to launch the same missiles by plane (drawn from the stock of the air force this time).

Wait and see I guess

From what I've gleaned over the past couple days, if there is indeed a strike, it will most likely be US, British, and French missiles targeting Syrian airstrips and chemical factories/storage.  The amount of time since possible strikes were announced though has given the Syrians and co. the chance to move a lot of personnel and gear out of harm's way.

Of course, nothing is certain, so we'll see what really happens.

It is shocking that France's military hardware stores are so low.

(OK, maybe not THAT shocking but still)

A century ago, you couldn't twirl a dervish without him running into French small arms, artillery, and trained troops in Eastern Europe, Africa or Asia.

Well budget, what else can I say

What more shocking is that's the state of the most prominent European army, the UK being mostly on par.

When Merkel say that she won't strike as well in Syria, it's mostly because she can't (both politically and technically given the state of the German forces).

Also the stock is that low partly because those ~50 missiles only represent the first batch  being delivered since January 2017.

It will always be time to increase the order after that.

Problem is if we fire them all now, we won't be able to strike later before some time (or with increased risks for our forces) which take an option out of the table for our foreign politics before the next batch is delivered.
