Donward
I think America has more than carried the weight of space exploration in the past half century. Other than a few notable firsts, most of the sound data we are getting from space is coming from the boys at NASA.
SuperComrade
Russia has done by far the bulk of the work in making space habitation practical. NASA has focused more on planetary exploration and remote sensing
Alex C.
This video is applicable, and one of my favorites. NDT argues that NASA was founded on the basis that Sputnik freaked people out (as it was a hollowed out nuclear warhead):
Mohamed A
I think that no one in particular won. The Soviets did a certain field, then the Americans did another field. But the Soviets went.. inactive after the Americans landed on the moon. Kind of. Not as active as NASA at least. But I think that's something related to budgets. Even the NASA has this problem (budget), though.
Donward
Next up, NDG reveals that water is wet between 0 and 100 degrees centigrade. Yeah, the Sputnik thing was a cultural phenomenon that was out of proportion with reality. See the "Missile Gap" myth of the 1950s and early 60s. Sturgeon
America clearly won the space race with the Moon landings, but I don't think that means the US necessarily contributed more to space exploration or colonization.

Even the NASA has this problem (budget), though. The Soviets were far more active in terms of manned spaceflight, between Salyut/Almaz and Mir. If anything, it was probably NASA that sort of felt around in the dark after it had completed its "purpose" of landing man on the Moon
SuperComrade
Funny thing, my sister met NdGT about two months ago in Australia. I actually talked indirectly to him through her, lol
