Belesarius
http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/tb-who-1.3292281 1.1 million dead worldwide vs 1.2 million dead from HIV in 2014. Does anyone else find it sadly disheartening that a fairly easily treatable disease is killing that many people per year world wide? I'm wondering what percentage of that is in refugee/migrant type settings.
Toxn
You know that nobody dies of HIV right? They die of whatever disease moves in when HIV has knocked out your immune system. Take a guess what sort of diseases those might be... Sturgeon
SuperComrade
The main reason is that AIDS-related deaths have been falling faster than TB deaths over the years. TB is notoriously difficult to treat (6-9 months of antibiotics for normal TB, 2 years of toxic chemotherapy for MDR-TB, similarly for XDR-TB, but with only a 50% success rate)
Scooby
Take a guess what sort of diseases those might be... It doesn't help that gov't "free" clinics for HIV patients are often co-located with clinics for TB patients.
Walter_Sobchak
It's funny how both diseases have been romanticized to a certain extent in different time periods.
Toxn
To be honest, death by TB would be preferable to all the other ways being immunocompromised can kill you: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS-defining_clinical_condition#Conditions
SuperComrade
TB is more horrible by far, it is a very slow and extremely painful death, especially if it goes beyond the lungs
