It looks like eight marines and one sailor died in the accident with several others being injured (two are said to be in critical condition). Quote A cargo ship is suitable for transporting large volumes of cargo only using wind energy. At the same time, the dimensions of the vessel will be truly huge. The capacity of such a ship will be enough to transport 7,000 vehicles. The Oceanbird's main power source will be the computer-controlled 80-meter retractable sails. Computer will calculate how to use wind energy most efficiently. A regular fuel auxiliary engine can be used as a standby and to enter and exit the harbor. The maximum speed of the ship will reach 10 knots. It will take about 12 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. An ordinary modern cargo ship passes this route faster - in 8 days. To develop the Oceanbird's design, the researchers used a lidar to track the flow of wind over ships at altitudes up to 300 meters. After analyzing the results from 35 million different measurement points, the company's engineers found that the wind speed changes less than expected. Another important discovery was that not only sails, but also sterns allow to extract wind energy. The team then ran a series of tests using computer simulations and real life scale model tests. The authors of the project wanted to find out with what design it is possible to transport goods across the ocean, using exclusively the force of the wind. It is noteworthy that the new technology can be used not only in Oceanbird, which has yet to be built from scratch. The wind will work for fossil fuel ships, including cruise ships. We'll have to wait a while to see how Oceanbird makes its maiden voyage: the ship's design will be finalized by the end of 2021. The ocean-ready vessel will not appear until 2024. I wonder how they will change the structure of the ship. Just by welding some parts to it, or cut the front part off and just install a new section. Still a awesome ship. I really liked the idea of a helicopter based carrier. I think, relatively cheaper and smaller. More accessible to smaller nations. Fortunately all the inboard equipment had been offloaded at this point so they weren't damaged. In practice the bow of the Perle will be cut-off and replaced by the one of the Saphir (of the same class) which was recently removed from active service. Once the two parts have been welded, all the cables, pipes and connections will have to be reconnected. The maintenance of the submarine will then resume from where it was before the fire. The reparation will last 6 month, mobilize 300 peoples and is expected to cost 120 millions € (among those 50 millions € paid by insurances) which is surprisingly little for an operation of this scale. I can't see how they could deploy those speedboats, the AShM would need guidance from another platform (the drones may be able to provide it) and the 3-Khordad SAM without target acquisition radar is very limited in capability. According to a Chinese military expert, on August 26, 2020, a DF-21D ballistic anti-ship missile with a maximum range of 1,500 km from Zhejiang province and a DF-26B ballistic missile with a maximum range of 4,000 km from Qinghai province were launched at a moving target ship in the Paracel Islands region in South China Sea.
