Three days ago a USMC AAV sunk on the sea near San Clemente island, California. It looks like eight marines and one sailor died in the accident with several others being injured (two are said to be in critical condition). So far only one body of those missing was found.

Not totally warfare, but still interesting. Oceanbird is a concept of wind-powered cargo ship.

Quote

A cargo ship is suitable for transporting large volumes of cargo only using wind energy. At the same time, the dimensions of the vessel will be truly huge. The capacity of such a ship will be enough to transport 7,000 vehicles.

The Oceanbird's main power source will be the computer-controlled 80-meter retractable sails. Computer will calculate how to use wind energy most efficiently. A regular fuel auxiliary engine can be used as a standby and to enter and exit the harbor.

The maximum speed of the ship will reach 10 knots. It will take about 12 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. An ordinary modern cargo ship passes this route faster - in 8 days.

To develop the Oceanbird's design, the researchers used a lidar to track the flow of wind over ships at altitudes up to 300 meters. After analyzing the results from 35 million different measurement points, the company's engineers found that the wind speed changes less than expected.

Another important discovery was that not only sails, but also sterns allow to extract wind energy. The team then ran a series of tests using computer simulations and real life scale model tests. The authors of the project wanted to find out with what design it is possible to transport goods across the ocean, using exclusively the force of the wind.

It is noteworthy that the new technology can be used not only in Oceanbird, which has yet to be built from scratch. The wind will work for fossil fuel ships, including cruise ships.

We'll have to wait a while to see how Oceanbird makes its maiden voyage: the ship's design will be finalized by the end of 2021. The ocean-ready vessel will not appear until 2024.

Ekranoplan "Lun" of project 903 now.

Despite the fact that at the end of July it was towed to the Derbent area, where it was supposed to become an exhibit of the Patriot park, the Lun continues to remain in the same place.

At the same time, as reported by eyewitnesses who visit the site, the ekranoplan is partially filled with water from the damage, making it impossible to implement attempts to pull it ashore with construction equipment.

Great job, just a great job.

Japan's converted Izumo-class carriers will not feature a ‘ski-jump' ramp for F-35B operations

So the front part of the ship will be squire instead of a point shape. I wonder how they will change the structure of the ship. Just by welding some parts to it, or cut the front part off and just install a new section.

Still a awesome ship. I really liked the idea of a helicopter based carrier. I think, relatively cheaper and smaller. More accessible to smaller nations.

The class Rubis SSN Perle which recently suffered a fire during it's maintenance will be repaired.

http://www.opex360.com/2020/10/22/gravement-endommage-par-un-incendie-le-sous-marin-nucleaire-dattaque-perle-va-etre-repare/

It was initially feared that the fire, which lasted for 14h, would have damaged the hull irrevocably, rendering the submarine unable to dive safely.

Fortunately all the inboard equipment had been offloaded at this point so they weren't damaged.

In practice the bow of the Perle will be cut-off and replaced by the one of the Saphir (of the same class) which was recently removed from active service.

Once the two parts have been welded, all the cables, pipes and connections will have to be reconnected. The maintenance of the submarine will then resume from where it was before the fire.

The reparation will last 6 month, mobilize 300 peoples and is expected to cost 120 millions € (among those 50 millions € paid by insurances) which is surprisingly little for an operation of this scale.

An interesting support ship of Iranian navy but it looks to me like they more or less just put everything they could on a modified cargo ship. I can't see how they could deploy those speedboats, the AShM would need guidance from another platform (the drones may be able to provide it) and the 3-Khordad SAM without target acquisition radar is very limited in capability.

Chinese way to deal with aircraft carriers groups:

Quote

Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported that at an October 2020 scientific conference organized by the National Development and Reform Commission of the People's Republic of China, a professor at the Beijing University of Aviation and Astronautics - Beihang University and one of the authors of the book "Unlimited War: A Chinese Master Plan to Destroy America" Wang Xiangsui revealed some details of the PLA Missile Forces' massive missile attack on a US Navy carrier group in late August 2020.

According to a Chinese military expert, on August 26, 2020, a DF-21D ballistic anti-ship missile with a maximum range of 1,500 km from Zhejiang province and a DF-26B ballistic missile with a maximum range of 4,000 km from Qinghai province were launched at a moving target ship in the Paracel Islands region in South China Sea. The target was successfully hit.
