They included add-on armor as a late tier modification on 4 of the Sherman models fairly recently (M4A2, M4A1 76 W. M4A3 76 W, Firefly), though it's only track/drive wheels w/ no sandbags, etc... not sure if there's any glaring errors in placement. 

Nah man. I am almost 100 percent certain those are Hollywood backlot locations. Either Warner Brothers or the Iverson Movie Ranch or something like that. Those oak trees are a dead give away.

Think this one is a WB production as well, the production quality and props/effects during the "combat" scene - and the M2 mocked up to look German @ ~4:47

Baryatinskiy writes that it took two days to clear a Sherman tank from grease after shipment to make it functional, plus the tanks were not shipped with ammunition inside. He rates this story as doubtful.

Would crated and gripon tanks have been greased? The weatherproofing methods don't seem all that consistent. 

Figured you guys would get a kick out of this, an arctic convoy ship upon finding its supply of ammunition inadequate;

"It was decided on 28 June to open the seals on one of the three M-3 U.S. Army tanks on the deck, part of the cargo, and to determine whether the 37 millimeter gun in it could be manned and used for the defense of the ship. This was thought advisable in view (1) of the small ammount of mixed tracer and ball .30 ammunition in our lockers; and (2) of the short effective range of the .30 Lewis machine gun against aircraft. This done, the gun was found suitable for use. Ammunition (Armor Piercing with tracer) was broken out of the hold with the aid of the Chief Officer, the gun was test-fired and a two man crew trained and assigned General Quarters stations in the tank.

The Germans apparently only care about the Sherman out of the list of Lend Lease vehicles.

 

Is this from Sixth Army? I've seen reference to communiques; “According to intelligence reports, very strong panzer concentrations of US origin have entered the Stalingrad sector." but never managed to find them.

I might have a PDF, barring that I have a friend in Arizona who reproduces manuals.

 

Why are you wanting that manual in particular?

A relative of mine was a Sherman tanker killed in Cologne, there's some famous footage of his tank commander bailing out with a severed leg and the Panther that had hit them being taken out by a Pershing. Little over a year ago a German historian put out a book and documentary about the battle and specifically about those in the combat footage. It had been my understanding that Julian (my relative) was the driver but the morning reports shown in the documentary list his MOS as 616 (gunner) among other evidence that crew members may have been out of position. I just can't find any source material that lists these older MOS codes, which I'm told would be AR 615-26.

Jeep and others, do any of you happen to have a copy of 'Army Regulations No. 615-26' (AR 615-26), War Department September 15, 1942'?

I'm trying to find an authoritative source for the early Sherman MOS codes for some research I'm doing, but have had no luck.

Hello all. I've just recently discovered theshermantank.com while doing some personal research on a family member and Sherman tanker who was killed in Cologne. I wanted to thank you for the wealth of information provided there. I noticed the 'Tank Versus Tank' report by Lt Col Irzyk begins with an unattributed quote critical of the Sherman, I believe it's a direct quote from an article published in Life Magazine, 26 March 1945 entitled 'Battle of the Tanks'. 

The article offers little other than a general comparison (and a rather interesting looking King Tiger) but as it helps clarify the points made in Irzyk's report I thought it worth sharing.
