  1. Question time: are tortilla chips a viable snack on their own, or do they exist primarily as a salsa delivery vehicle? I say the latter (provided you have good salsa).

Tortilla chips are not primarily a salsa delivery vehicle, but an all purpose tomato/avocado derivative delivery vehicle. They are also tireless bearers of everything kind of mexicanish in the fridge, we're cleaning it out, and that is a noble service indeed.

  2. Which brand video card? It really depends on that because that decides whether you're getting gsync or freesync.

I'm currently running an Asus XR341CK I got refurbed for $600, which is a great deal. Ultrawide's on the table for Freesync in a way that it isn't for gsync which only has the Acer X34 and the Asus PG348Q. The price difference between them and what I've got is literally the price difference of a high end card, so I'm getting a high end card next time AMD releases some (I really want that Fury X cooler on a good card). There's also some screens like the LG 34UM88-B. Ultrawides are crazy sweet in my opinion but they do come with tradeoffs.

Gsync seems to have all its best screens in the 1440p 144+ Hz range like Matt's screen. The Acer XB271HU is really nice, Asus has the PG279Q, if you want to go a bit cheaper there's the Dell S2716DG which is a really nice screen but is TN rather than IPS and thus not the same level of pretty. The Freesync screens are a bit less heavy on the price tag but do come with some limits (IE don't generally have a freesync range up to 144 Hz).

Main thing is that you're looking for high framerate, IPS and resolution at a reasonable price, and in Freesync land you're looking for a maximum framerate on the range that's 2.5 times that of the bottom if possible. That lets you drop below the minimum without nasty effects.

  3. Why 2 SSDs there Bronez? (I'm not one to judge, I'm considering giving in to the sickness and replacing my platters with a 2 GB SSD).

Also the MSI Z170A SLI Plus is a compelling option:
    http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z170asliplus

It's got fewer USB ports in back, but it has a nice audio codec and network controller, boots fast, and is a bit cheaper. Plus I like the all black look, easier to match with the rest of the computer (I am a manchild with a window case). They're both pretty similar boards and a real solid value for the price, you can't go wrong with either (especially if your case has plenty of USB ports).

I'm always a few years behind the "bleeding edge" but I never have any trouble running new games that way. I upgrade the first time a game takes a shit on the highest settings.

I do that too, problem is I really really like nice monitors. So I'm running a mix of medium and high on a 290 on recent games because 3440x1440 makes it hard to drive at or above 50 fps.

  4. I think the crucial distinction here is that the suit must be well-fitted. A slightly badly-fitted suit sucks in ways that other outfits don't.

    I think that's actually a feature, not a bug.

But by the end of the Republican Era things had gone so far south that people were actually wearing tunics underneath their togas, and a certain pompous and insufferable windbag named Cicero made a point of mocking a certain populist upstart named Julius Caesar for his habit of wearing the toga so loosely that it trailed on the ground slightly.

I'm not sure when the toga went out of style as a formal garment, but it must have been an enormous relief.

The impression I've gotten is that Caesar was basically a Roman hipster as far as fashion was concerned, confirm/deny?

  5. How much damage would one torpedo do against an Iowa class ship?

Odds are that one torpedo against an Iowa would have damaged her range and speed more than her chances of staying afloat. I'm not sure how well her shafts were protected, there's always the chance of a hit like PoW took, but other than that modern battleships usually did pretty well against contemporary torpedoes. US carriers that had a TDS (Jesus fucking christ, Wasp) usually did pretty well, I bet the UK ones would have done fine, since it seems the Japanese problems were poor ventilation and avgas storage that was pretty weak against shocks, and that's particular to their ships.

As an example, the North Carolina ate a torp from the spread that killed Wasp just forward of the number 1 turret. That wasn't really back far enough to catch the TDS full on, but her list was righted quickly and she was able to maintain formation at 26 kn. On the other hand, the Kongo ate two torps from the Sealion, flooded two of her boiler rooms, and caused progressive flooding (going fast enough to keep the sub from a follow on shot caused wave action to hammer away at her now exposed insides) that eventually caused her to list and be obviously sinking when she exploded.

  6. I learned that I have visual snow. After so many years trying to find out why I see static, it feels relieving to be honest.

I learned that I have a recurrent corneal erosion. I also learned that a go-to treatment for it is a viable way to treat my eyes not actually being very good at focusing light (PRK), so that's nice.

For those who don't know what recurrent corneal erosion is, it's when the cornea and epithelium don't stick together as well as they should so when your eyes get dry in the morning the epithelium might just decide it likes the eyelid more and suddenly all the nerves at that attachment suddenly get exposed. I've got a real good idea why you get pain pills when they open the eye up there for surgery.

  7. I guess I also have to be the guy who says it: Call of Duty looks like shit today. And that's not just a knock on graphical performance. You can make a presentable game with the proper art design and direction if you have a poor engine. Hell, I think the original Metroid Prime still looks good held up to other games of today. Call of Duty doesn't need to achieve parity with Battlefield. Unfortunately, they have neither graphical power nor good art direction, and the current CoDs lack any sort of interesting visuals, with only minor jumps between games so that it's becoming difficult to differentiate them.

Realistic games always age terribly compared to games with stylized art. It's more fundamental than gravity.

  8. Also, part of it is that a bomber with a strafing nose is a bomber with the added capability to fire at any AA to try and suppress it. Great for maritime interdiction for instance. Then it's just a matter of how much weight you're willing to put into effectiveness, because every gun is buying a bit more saturation.

The Pacific saw some pretty major use of them (as well as rockets and futile attempts to get enough accuracy with a 75mm gun to get more range), so flight radius is a big factor.

  9. Congress wants to look at the possibility of restarting F-22 production.  Because BEAR NO, DRAGON NO.

    http://www.military.com/daily-news/2016/04/19/house-lawmakers-air-force-study-restarting-f22-production.html

That is a great many steps from actually doing anything and the studies on the subject say it'd be prohibitively expensive.

Whoa. USMC Hornet Readiness is down to 60%. They only have 87 Hornets in usable condition.  They have 159 aircraft out of order 'long term' due to maintenance issues.

    So like their CH-53 fleet?

  10. An almost hour-long, but very good presentation on Doom:

I highly recommend it.  Did you know that at one point there were more installs of Doom than there were installs of Windows operating system?  I don't think any video game will ever be able to claim that again ever.

I think some people would take your bet, but that's more about being very bullish about mobile than anything else.

Don't try to tell Division fans this to their faces, but I feel like the game should have shipped without PvP. As it stands, anyone jumping into PvP has either completely decked-out gear and/or is glitching/cheating and can instantly down you by dumping a 40-round Vector mag in under a second. Up to that point, it was one of my favorite co-op games of all time, and I've had much more fun just making new characters and playing all missions on Hard while just exploring the city.

Oh do tell me this. It's a total fucking abrogation of the designers' responsibility to have no way to prevent cheating, only hand out two day bans for cheating, and to force anyone who wants any of a wide spectrum of end game gear to go into PvPvE. It wouldn't be okay even if blue on blue weren't possible simply because as soon as you're competing over drops, cheating and power gaps between you and minmaxers are very serious problems that absolutely ruin fun.

  11. But still amusing as fuck when Ghost gets nominated as Romance of the Year.

    #Betterlovestorythan50shades

(I don't think it actually is, it's a bus ride to hell, and I've got a real feeling about some of that stuff being him putting way too much of himself into the main character (and by proxy into other characters)).
