  1. I had a mission to get 9 kills with a SPAAG, so I took the Type 65 out for a spin. I was having trouble hitting aircraft, but I eventually shot down a B-24. By that point, my team had crumbled, and my position was being over run. So I found some good defilade to hide in and waited to ambush the approaching enemies. The first target that presented itself to me was the broadside a T-34-85. 37mm HVAP shells made short work of him. A Crusader came along shortly after and met the same fate as this friend. At this point, I start poking around the corner of my cover, and I find an M36 who was unaware of my existence. I made him acutely aware of it, but it was too late for him at that point. An M41 had been watching this and decided to rush my position. I wasn't able to knock him out right away, but I severely crippled him and got him stuck on a repair cycle. An enemy Panther found me and destroyed my SPAAG, but not before I called 3 tight cluster artillery strikes on the M41. Needless to say, the Bulldog could not withstand that level of saturation bombardment. I ended the match with 4 ground kills, 1 air kill, the highest score on my team, as well as the most kills.

  2. I discovered why I dislike the Cent Mk10 and Conq after coming from the Cent Mk3 and Strv 81: The L1 and L7 have the same behind armor effects as the 20pdr, but have a longer reload and are way less accurate. The L7 doesn't even have meaningful better penetration, while the L1 has 244% longer reload time.

    Accuracy tests from 1km.

  3. 1.25km SS.11 kill

I was a scrub that match and only managed two kills, but they were both with missiles, and we won.

RNG was also working against me. I engaged another Tiger II at about 1.15km. The first 20pdr destroyed his engine and set him on fire. The SS.11 that followed that up hit him square in a sponson ammo rack, destroying but not detonating it. The next 20pdr shell hit another ammo rack, but also failed to detonate it. My record so far is destroying four ammo racks on the same Ferdinand without any of them cooking off.

It's not very useful in Arcade, it's more for Realistic Battles.

You basically have to bind a button for it, but in RB, you press that button and a timer bar will appear. When the bar finishes, you will get a range reading on your target. How accurate and how long the rangefinding is depends on your gunner's rangefinding skill.

Of course, not all tanks have this, only those with rangefinders, like the T-64A, M103, Conqueror, the M47/M48 Pattons, etc.

At least in the test drive all tanks have it. I tried it with a wide variety using the realistic battle settings, and even things like the T-35 have a range finding ability.

  5. I picked up the Conqueror recently, since I need to purchase a couple more rank Vs before I unlock rank VI. Initially, I was kind of exciting to drive the tank, but it has been a bit of a let down. Sure, the L1 pokes things real good, but coming from the Centurion 3, the Conq has roughly 1/3 the rate of fire, and practically it doesn't poke things much harder than 20pdr APDS. The notable examples are being able to slice through IS-3 and 6 upper glacis as well as T28/95 frontal armor (which is hilarious to do). But I've found the 6.3 second reload of the 20pdr enough to offset this penetration difference. Compare this to the top reload of the L1 being 14.9 seconds, then take away 3 degrees of gun depression, and the extra pen just doesn't seem like a worthwhile trade. This long reload also reduces the utility of HESH, because you now have to plan these shots.

The Vickers MBT is an interesting change coming from the Centurions. Having an L7 with a reload time of 5 seconds flat (with a maxed out crew) does offset the lack of armor and reduced gun depression. The Vickers is considerably more mobile than the Cents, as well. All in all, the L7 is only a modest improvement over the 20pdr. HESH is not as reliable or damaging as one would expect, but it is incredibly useful against softer targets and side shots on tanks. The ADS does have slightly more penetration than 20pdr APDS, and is has the advantage of being free since it is the default round. The top reload on the Cent 10 is only 0.4 seconds longer than the Cent 3, so it is rarely an issue. The turret of the Mk 10 is a let down from the 3, though. The mantle is much smaller, and is thinner. Externally, they are both 200mm on the front, but the Mk 3 turret has an additional 20-100mm of armor behind the mantle.

Anyways, the Chieftains should be getting things back to normal of having a high pen, high RoF, gun with -10 degrees of depression, good turret armor and acceptable mobility.

  6. We all remember the funny videos of War Thunder bugs; a Sherman skidding across the entire map, a shell bouncing off all the extra track links on a Jagdtiger and then penetrating the engine deck, etc. We also remember when WoT pretended to give a shit about historical research. Now the tables have turned. Whenever the War Thunder devs change a vehicle, they usually cite sources that form the basis of their rationale. Yes, there are still plenty of inaccuracies, but I don't think I ever saw WoT cite historical records as a reason for vehicle changes.

WoT on the other hand has stopped trying to balance vehicles around historical factors, and has started making things up whole cloth to shoehorn vehicles into places that they don't want to be. They have also prioritized releasing premium vehicles over tech tree vehicles, to the point where they radically alter the specs to make things fit tier 8. A great example is the T-103. The proposed specs of that vehicle have over double the armor thickness over spec in order to make it fit tier 8 better.

I think the B1 ter is the worst premium tank I've driven in this game. It's front armor is a damned lie.

EDIT: Upon further reflection I was incorrect. Had some really good runs with it. Driver workload is very high though.

I've never had a problem with the front armor, I just have problems with Pz IVs and their 3 second reload with 100mm pen HEAT at 2.3.

The B1 ter is a workable tank, but as you noticed, it requires a lot of effort to be effective with. I thought that it would be OP at 2.3, but it seems to fit just fine. I might even suggest lowering the B1 bis to 2.0. I Don't think that the ter with be raised to 2.7; it's firepower is wholly inadequate for facing 3.7. Also, it would be at the same rating as the M3 Lee, but slower, with less penetration, and lower RoF.

  8. After looking at the stats, I don't really feel that the French tanks are that much better than their British counterparts in the 6.0-6.7 rating (which is basically the tier 8 equivalent to WoT). I can get past the lack of armor, since you don't want to be getting shot anyways, but the gun performance is rather disappointing compared to the 20pdr. The French auto loading mechanism at that tier can sustain a 6.66 second reload for seven shots, before a 38 second reload, where as the 20pdr with a topped out crew will reload in 6.3 seconds. The 20pdr also has access to 285mm pen APDS, and not just APC or APCBC rounds with penetration ranging from 191-226mm as well as substantially less favorable auto-bounce angles. The British tanks also get 2 more degrees of gun depression.

The main trade offs between the two nations are that the British have much better ammunition with higher pen, more gun depression, and a faster peak rate of fire for the entire ammunition store. The Centurion turret it more than adequate for protecting you from return fire, and can allow to poke against lower rank opponents with a certain degree of protection. The French have a consistent reload rate, so a dead loader does not effect your burst RoF, and they are considerably faster than their British counterparts. The French also do not require you to have a highly trained crew to attain the high RoF.

For War Thunder, firepower and mobility are your primary concerns, and armor is a nice thing to have. The British have a substantial lead in firepower, and a have the turret armor to weather some fire, while the French have much better mobility combined with adequate firepower.
