  1. How stable is HGH in the environment? Especially that area of the world. I would have to do more research, but the more stable it became the less bio-availabile it would become.

As for antibiotic resistance, yeah that's no bueno. Local populations of bacteria that are resistant would not be good. Although, I'm not sure what kind of evolutionary advantage it would give a certain population over another in an open environment (aka, not a feed lot), so I don't see the resistant plasmids completely overtaking very quickly.

  2. Both, sort of.

First, you're speaking of using a diesel/electric system for a moving vehicle, right? Compression  diesel ignition engines are at best 33% +/- 4% efficient. http://web.mit.edu/16.unified/www/FALL/thermodynamics/notes/node26.htmlWhich, honestly, is pretty damned good. Chemically stored energy is really the best bang for your buck.

Although chemically stored energy is really good, we're only getting around that percentage of usable joules out of it per unit mass. But that's actually really good, and it's mostly all usable.

Using the joules we can steal from this engine, we can then power an alternator and charge up a battery, as you have suggested. This isn't a 100% efficient system, either. It's more efficient, but not 100%. Then we want to use that stored energy to power a vehicle. Again, electric engines are efficient, but not 100% efficient.

And all this means is that were running in circles, bleeding energy from our primary source of energy.

Also, how big will this battery need to be? In a submarine, size isn't that big of an issue, relatively. But on a land vehicle, size and weight are serious numbers to take into consideration.

So I say, why not skip the middle management and use the source of your energy directly?

Plus, if it was a better system it would have been done before. This tech isn't exactly ground breaking.

  3. I'm gonna need you to propagate error there pal.

Interesting.  I knew the new Turkish IFV used band tracks, and broke 30 tonnes, but I did not realize that CV90s did as well.

And yes, I think today a diesel-electrical drivetrain would have better efficiency than a mechanical one.  There would be about 90% efficiency converting the output of a diesel motor to electricity, and about 90% going from electrical back to mechanical in the motors.  There would probably still have to be epicyclic final drives, and those are about 97% efficient, so the final efficiency would be about 79%, or about a 7% gain in power at the sprocket over the best mechanical systems.

  4. You get diminishing returns when it comes to battery size vs storage. Not sure you'd get the efficiency you're after.

Nice article Collimatrix! I learned quite a bit.

And considering this: "The transmission and final drives are not perfectly efficient either, and waste a significant amount of the power flowing through them as heat.  As a result of this, the actual power available at the sprocket is typically between 61% and 74% of the engine's quoted gross power.".

Does this mean that a hybrid electric system is more efficient?
The efficiency of a normal electric engine is more than 90%, same for a generator, frequency modulator and transformer. The loss from resistance in the cable should be close to zero, considering the length.

I may not be a engineer (yet), but from my understanding, making a hybrid-electric propulsion system would be simpler and easier than a current day tank transmissions. But when it comes to cooling i have no idea how that would turn out in a tank, since most electric engines are self-cooled. Or how any mayor component would act for that matter inside a tank, I am more used to the industrial standard equipment.

I could draw up something for you, but the steering system would be quite basic, considering I have no expertise in that field.

Oh and, from what I remember, the CV9030C2 is actually 35-36 ton, and it uses rubberband tracks, so a 40 ton vehicle might be able to use rubberband tracks in the future.

  5. Profile of a hacker

    Look at this little shit.

My buddy and I ran into a hacker tonight. And, like most, it was a subtle thing. I fought him once and noticed that, on top of using a hideously overpowered combo (It's an insta-stun, buffed, that can erase half your health in one hit), I felt like my attacks weren't doing much.

They were doing damage, sure, but something felt off.

Fast forward. We're winding down, my friend and I. Then we get this guy again. My friend fights him and gets obliterated.

Which is odd, because he's better than I am. He exclaims, "What the fuck, he's hacking. He should have been stunned from that hit. He's got to be hacking."

So I take out a rather large weapon, one that stuns quite nicely. When I fight him, I smack him HARD. He wasn't attacking, or running, or dodging. Just a straight up solid smack.

    And he wasn't stunned.

In fact, the hacker went ahead and slammed me with a combo that took half my health.

    Quick lesson on "hyperarmor"

In DS3, certain weapons give you "hyperarmor". That is, while swinging said weapon, you can't be interrupted by a smaller, faster attack. Small weapons don't get this, because they are already fast and hit hard. But with small weapons, you can be interrupted with any attack.

He was using small weapons, and he had infinite hyper-armor activated. He would not be stunned, no matter what.

Well, I took a picture of his steam profile. Let's see what a Hacker looks like.

Ooo, we've got an edgelord on our hands.

What's that he's saying in his profile? Let's take a closer look

    PdPkItd.png

Watch out, guys. We've got a real edgy son of a bitch on our hands.

  6. Brick Fight, I understand what you mean. DS1, for me, definitely cannot be topped. And that's because it was the first. High school sweetheart sort of game when comparing it to the others.

I still think DS3 has far superior mechanics.

Hilariously, I've got more time in DS2 than either of them. But that'll change.

DOOM has ruined me. I'm normally a shooter guy, but DOOM was so perfect, that it's hard for me to pick up shooters that aren't as well-designed and fun. Probably explains why I've been playing nothing but RPG and strategy games for months, now. I hope some publishers took notice and we get more of the same.

Once I'm finished with the Dragon Age games, I'm probably going to finally suck it up and go through The Witcher.

Have you ever heard of Painkiller?

  7. Ran into a new hack in Dark Souls 3 last night.

I'm running through the game on a new build I want to try out (Daggers-only Dex build).  I'm naked, save for a shield and two daggers I swap between.

Now, in the Dark Souls games there's a ring that grants you increased damage on ripostes and backstabs. These are critical attacks that can be performed when you parry an enemy or other player (with the shield/other parrying tool) or sneak around them for a backstab. Massive damage, cool animation, makes my dick hard, etc etc.

This fast dagger character relies on critical attacks.

So in one area, I decide to try invading. Why not?  We'll see if I can get some decent PVP in. I haven't done any on this character yet.

Very first world I invade, and I notice every enemy is dead. That's a bad sign. As an invader, you're working WITH the enemies to kill the host.

When all enemies are dead, that's a sure sign of GANKING.

I round the corner, and sure enough there's three other players hanging out by the boss door. Waiting for invaders to 3v1 into the dirt.

That's called a gank. It's when multiple people team up against one. It's abysmal.

    But it gets worse.

These people aren't decent players. They aren't even good player. They're all using over-powered, bland weapons and have atrociously bad tactics. I dodged around the three of them for probably four minutes, slashing here or there. But they can heal, and I can't punish a heal attempt while fending off 2 other players.

Then I parry one of the idiots. My riposte does enough damage to kill a player in one shot.

BUT, the hornet ring animation doesn't happen. I get a normal riposte animation, for normal riposte damage.

    WTF.

After that, they cornered me and stun-locked me to death. The phantom/summon guy that I parried gives me a cheeky emote.

    ------------------------------------

Which brings me to the meat of the issue:

If you are going to cheat in an online game, do it like you've got a set of balls between your legs.

Don't do this half-ass coy little shit, like doing critical-damage protection hacks. What the fuck is that? If you're GANKING, and HACKING, why not go all the way? Have some fun with it! Christ on a stick, hack an item that petrifies me in one hit. Make your rolls damage me and just roll into me to death. Or just don't try to hide it and give you and all your buddies infinite health or stamina. Or get rid of your hitbox!

You're already Ganking, so obviously there's no honor or pride left in your sorry husk of a human shell. Just give in and hack like you mean it, you cowardly fucktards.

  8. I only read the abstract, since I'm currently balls-deep in homework, but are they creating a population of mosquitoes that will pass on at a 90% transmittance rate a gene that turns off the fertility of female mosquitoes?

    Fantastic.

Now, if I may, I need to design a similar system and spray the entire South of the United States with it to genetically target Kudzu.
