Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Trinity test.

70 years ago today, in a remote part of southern New Mexico, a fission chain reaction started on Earth for the first time in billions of years.

I believe the comet is just an egg for a cyclopean creature, like the ones who built the Pyramids in Egypt, Mexico, and on the Moon. I know this is true. Don't argue with my beliefs you bigots.
Microbial "life" might be fairly common, but I doubt it is on every comet or rocky body. Abiogenesis is a complex process and might be impossible in many environments.

The Z-19, and the Kawasaki OH-1 are both examples of the sort of scout helo that makes a lot of sense. Essentially, they are modern incarnations of early-variant Cobras optimized for the scout role with much better avionics.

The US uses aging OH-58 Kiowas, in this place, but tried to skip this more sensible idea in the 1980s with the RAH-66 Comanche, which is like the Z-19 and OH-1, if both of those were stealth and had requirements cancer.

One upshot to the US Army using the upgraded OH-58, though, is that the helos look like they're out of Mad Max with how rough and rumble they are:

Also, an aspect of the Kiowa that is much cooler than either the Harbin or Kawasaki is the MOTHERFUCKING SWORDS sprouting from it. That's actually what they are, too, high alloy steel blades designed to cut cables in flight.

The Kiowa gives me mixed feelings. On the one hand, it's upgraded obsolescence, but on the other hand it's a pretty cool little bird.

Here is the anecdote in question.  The director and cast interviews on the LOTR DVDs mention it as well.

I recall another film cast interview that mentions Lee telling vague campfire stories about derring-do in the desert, and the actor being interviewed figured it was just an old man telling tales.  Up until it came to a part in the film where they had to throw some knives for a scene, that is, and it turned out that Christopher Lee was really, really good at throwing knives.

RobotMinisterofTrueKorea got a reaction from Sturgeon in Band of Brothers and The Pacific
I'm probably the only person on Earth who will recommend The Pacific over Band of Brothers. It's probably one of the better depictions of the PTO in a Hollywood production, and the combat sequences are pretty much the most terrifying put on screen. Jeeps wasn't kidding when he said they're incredibly graphic. Also, for me at least, it avoids my biggest issue with Band of Brothers which is that implication that E Company 2nd Battalion 506th PIR was somehow the best US Army Infantry Unit. A lot of The Pacific shows that 2/1 and 3/5 Marines were just cogs in a much larger war machine.

With that said, I also want to echo what Tied said. Generation Kill is pretty fantastic. It focuses more on the day to day interaction between Marines while overseas than combat. In fact one of the major focus points is how much 'Hurry up and wait' is involved vs actual combat. IMO it's probably my favorite HBO War series.
