Izdelie 404S "Kharkovchanka". This "Snow battleship" was based on modified AT-T artillery units tractor chassis, vehicle was build in 1958 by still-communist Kharkovites. 12 cylinders diesel, 520 HP, 9 fuel tanks (2500+ litres of fuel), heaters, etc. Vehicle weight was 35 tons, it could also tow up to 70 tons. Vehicle height was ~4 meters. The length of the vehicle was under 8.5 meters and a maximum width of 3.5 m. The one-volume, almost rectangular body managed to create a space with a total area of 28 m2 with a ceiling height of 210 cm. Carefully isolated from the chassis and seriously insulated, this area was divided into sections. In the front part, above the engine, a control module was located, which was shared between a driver and navigator. On the right (to direction of travel), a the control module was located, which housed radio cabin equipped with the most advanced equipment at the time. On the left side, behind a partition, a bedroom room for 8 people was made. Well, what a cruiser can work without galley! There was a place for it, however, the size of the latter did not allowed to organize a full cycle of cooking, so its main purpose has been heating up canned food. Over the galley took place latrine, and it was heated. Given the characteristics of operation on the "Kharkovchanka", it was equipped vestibule, allowing not to drop temperature inside the vehicle at the entrance / exit and a small clothes heaters was placed there. Tracks were 1 meters wide and were modifed to use in deep snow/ice. Worth mentioning that in order to avoid freezing of all the windows were fitted with a desiccant and had a constant flow of hot air. Frontal glass were fitted with electric heating, such as that which is now used in modern cars. By the way, the generator of "Kharkovchanka" has been able to produce up to 13 kWh of electricity, which is more than enough to provide all the needs of the expedition members. Kharkovchanka was used until 2008, even after Kharkovchanka-2 was created in 1975.
