Brick Fight got a reaction from Donward in The fragile and transitory nature of humour
Watched Rick and Morty's one season all in one go recently, and I think it finally dawned on me what makes great comedy: Sincerity. My friends all love Tim and Eric, and despite Steve Brule being genuinely funny (I have a disturbing weak spot for John C. Reilly), I've never been able to watch more than a few seconds of Tim and Eric without having all of the energy sapped out of me, the TV equivalent of eating a spoonful of cinnamon. It's because it's just so "ironic", which is today's most prevalent version of lazy humor.

Lazy humor has shown up in the past as things like poor slapstick, racial shock humor, gross-out humor, anything Bill Maher has ever done, etc. Ironic Humor is basically someone acknowledging that they are not funny, but they're also aware of what isn't funny, so doing something intentionally not funny is a joke in and of itself. I enjoy Rick and Morty because it cares enough about itself that it tries to be funny and entertaining. Someone loved the show, and sincerely wanted it to be entertaining enough to put effort into the characters, animation, charm, and writing. Same thing with genuinely funny and good comedy like The Venture Brothers, The Simpsons, Futurama, and even earlier comedy like The Marx Brothers (I only just started watching their movies recently, and am surprised at how genuinely laugh-out-loud funny they still are).

You can even compare it between movies made by the same people. Sincerity is why Mel Brooks fans remember movies like Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles more fondly than Men in Tights or Spaceballs. Saddles and seemed like a movie that Mel wanted to make, a movie he was passionate about. It rubbed off on the actors, who all turned in great performances and even shocked Brooks with their passionate performances.. Meanwhile, Spaceballs, while it has its moments, is the progenitor of the lazy parody, which is basically just taking situations from media, making them into more ridiculous moments, and hoping someone will go "ha ha." I think he maybe just wanted to make a fun movie with some fun people, but I don't see the heart of Young Frankenstein in it anywhere. I guess Sincerity is an important part of any medium, really, but it feels much more noticeable when it comes to comedy for me.

The Enfield finally got range time on Memorial Day. Shoots like a dream. The bolt is as smooth as everyone says, and the trigger just feels nice. I didn't go for grouping or anything, but I was able to plink soup cans at 100yds with only a handful of misses. Afterwards, I broke it up, and got as much gunk and grime as I could out (I'm liking Ballistol lately, it's even revitalized some of the wood. I'll still keep Hoppe's around, but I'm impressed with Balli so far). I'm really glad I found this thing. The guy in town I bought it from is notorious for over-priced and questionable merchandise, and I only think I got the deal I did because he had just gotten it only a few days earlier. I was so sick over spending the money on this thing for a short time because of him, but I'm glad to see it didn't go to waste. I think I'm gonna put in the research on MAS 36 and 49s, and try to find one in the Harrisburg show next month.

I still want you to put it on a board with a ton of Wehraboos and declare it an AK prototype and see what happens.

Dad officially let me have the Argentine Mauser today. He let me have it around at my place for a while because he never really shot it, and felt I'd take better care of it, but it was official today. I just love looking at this thing:

I love the Remy and Winchester, guys. I posted these in the small arms thread because I got the Enfield yesterday. I got the Argentine Mauser back from my dad today, so I got the whole gang together:

The Mauser's been in the family forever. It's been well taken care of, and the metal has only recently developed a petina. They're great rifles. I don't consider myself a wonderful shot, but I can't miss whatever I aim at with it. I also have never heard a more satisfying noise than when I work the action on this bolt.

The M44 was a gift from my dad, and it was the first rifle that was "mine." This is back when $80 got you the rifle, a sling, a carrying case, and surplus ammo pouches and cleaning equipment. It's a fine rifle, but not for pinpoint aiming. It's mostly useful for freaking people out on the range with the muzzle flash and earth-shattering kaboom.

The 91/30 is a recent addition. $200 for a barrel that had never been used, and restored wood. Kicking myself for not buying a $90 one when I could, but I'm glad to have him.

edit: Now that I look at it, the Mauser looks like it's in worse shape in the picture than it actually is, and the Enfield looks better than it actually is. Odd.

I have no reservations in taking these peoples' guns away for life after stuff like that. A wounded animal can get freaked out and maul a person out of fear. A gun is a responsibility as much as a "right." If you're not up for the responsibility, then you're not up for a right granted to you by the state. I'm tired of doofuses making us all look bad.

These doobers used to wait by roads in the mountains and shoot at dogs. It was treated with fines and generally ignored until some Gomer shot a trained rescue dog a few days after 9/11. The dog was out of training, and had just gotten called to serve with first responders at the tower or Pentagon, so the guy really got run through the wringer. It really didn't help that he "mistook" it for a deer, and shot it in the head as the owner was walking it down a paved road.

edit: Because that first paragraph may seem like I'm trying to steer us into the debate we all hate by now, I'm gonna just end this on a higher note. I just want someone to give a 20th century version of this speech to hunters in our areas before they're allowed to go out:

So, long story short, my grandfather and aunt were huge hoarders. Grandpa died, so we cleaned up, got on my aunt to take care of her stuff, got all of the useless shit out of our lives, and we're left with some cool thing like an M1907 sling and an M1A1 tank periscope. Unfortunately, I don't know much about some of it, so I'm asking around here. The first two are an Iver Johnson (top) and an F&W (bottom). I literally know nothing about them. Nobody ever saw grandpa buy a handgun, so we assume he nabbed some grunts' contraband when he was a Sargeant in the army:

The second one's vexed us for a while. It resembles a Velo pocket revolver, but has some visual differences and intricate detailing on it, and has what looks like "Browning" written on the top. I don't think Browning ever made these, so I just assume it was someone's personalized engraving. The action won't cycle, either by trigger or attempts to move the cylinder. Also, I am really sorry you have to see my goony, unkempt fingernails. I cut them after seeing them in the picture, I promise.

I overpaid for it, but I definitely feel like I owe it to the guy. He's given me insane deals on guns and equipment, and he offered me dirt-cheap prices for .303 if I came back. My collection as it stands now (Minus my Argentine Mauser, which is at my parents' house):

Thank you. I got the M44 for $80 a few years back (extra $20 for a case, strap, ammo pack, etc.). The 91/30 Is completely redone with an untouched barrel for $200 (I should have bought it when they were $90, but I was dumb). The Enfield is un-fired surplus for $550. I'm still kicking myself for not buying an M1 Carbine at the Harrisburg gun show for $350 about ten years ago. Living in Pennsylvania is a gun collector's dream. I just gotta get the Garand in there, and I'll be happy.
