Here's a phantom IS-3 sighting from before IS-3s were even in service.
It may have had issues with transmission reliability and the pike welds, but the IS-3 did a wonderful job of scaring people.

That_Baka reacted to Meplat in The M4 Sherman Tank Epic Information Thread.. (work in progress)
An aside, the use of 80 octane fuel by the U.S. meant that a lot of their mills were "overcarbureted". As in "running rich".
The "jeep (MB/GPW) ran around on 80 octane mil-std with a ~ 6.5/1 compression ratio. I've shaved the heads and stems on one mill and had it run strong on the shit gas we have now.
The radials used in U.S. armor could have run with higher compression (or boost ratios, since they had blowers), but it was felt that it would lead to excessive damage/wear if they had to run on other alliy's fuel.
All that aside, the thought of a V-12 M4 tickles me in all the right places.

Gurkhan says that Russia failed in development of the Kurganets-25. The factory is bankrupt.
Gurkhan's note: the old men and women at KMZ think that something will get better under RosTech's management! Hilarious! Twice as hilarious if you know that KMZ fucked up thanks to the efforts of people close to RosTech. As for the Kurganets, I critiqued it from the beginning for its limitless size and weak armament.

it is bullshit from what I found. Otvaga forum owner contacted one of Kurganmash friend, Kurganets is in development without big problems. From what I got this claim is internal money-related rivalry.

IDK. Kurgamash is now under Rostec, maybe this is related somehow. Factory continue to work as usual, they almost completed BMP-3 order, preparing for production of updated version of it, BMD-4Ms and BTR-MDM full production started or will start soon, it also produce parts as usual.

I moved these posts to this thread from the active protection systems thread because they are more relevant here. But this is very interesting.
@SH_MM, do you happen to recall the name of the West German anti-apfsds ERA developed for the Leopard 1? This is very interesting, and the first I've heard of such a thing.

There have certainly been a technological transfert between the SNPE and Kaman but the BS-G2 bricks used on the AMX-30B2 Brenus are thicker than the ARA tiles and in addition, provide protection against armor-piercing projectiles fired from medium-caliber autocannons.

That friend is wrong on this subject, "Avtomat Zaryadnoe" is wrong as second word form does not match meaning of the first word.

Ahhh yes. The famous European "We don't face this kind of threat yet" approach - when you are only prompted to act when the body bags start running out.
It's a good thing though that 80% of NATO is the US of A.

The bit I quoted from Kobylkin was directed at your question about why the FMP has a different effect than the BMP, not at whether or not feeding material into the jet lowers penetration.
Anyway, yes, the main reason why ERA/NERA works is due to feeding material into the jet. Since a penetrator can only penetrate a finite amount of armour, you can lower the thickness of main armour it can penetrate by feeding material (armour) into its path.
The faster a plate moves, the more material it can feed into the jet before the jet has passed the plate. A plate basically looks like this after the jet has gone through it:
And the faster the plate goes, the longer Lslit will be. To be specific, it can be calculated with this formula:
The jet will also pass through more material if the angle of the ERA/NERA is increased:
And what happens when you increase the thickness of the FMP and BMP?
(Note that the BMP in the FMP test is 8 mm thick while the FMP in the BMP test is 1 mm)
Anyway, there's lots more I want to say, but I'm a bit ill at the moment so staring at journals and papers isn't the smartest thing to do, I'm already getting a headache and yet I only have a few journals open:
I'll get back to this when I'm feeling better, I'm sorry for not being able to give a concise answer at the moment. Or maybe @Collimatrix can take over, he knows about as much as I do on this subject.

That_Baka reacted to LoooSeR in Vehicles of the PLA: Now with refreshing new topic title!
Iron Drapes is right about 2A72 being hilariously inaccurate compared to other 30 mm ACs if it is not supported by some sort of sleeve, i posted photos of BTR-82A with such sleeve, Uran-9 UGV have it, Tigr with 30mm RCWS, Vikhr UGVs have it as well, BMP-3s, Ukrainian APCs and IFVs with Skval RCWS are equipped with it and so on.
I didn't bothered to watch whole video from competition, but there are problems with scores counting in tank biathlon as well, some teams got additional scores for "hits" that were actually a missies, something is wrong with judging/spotting. And Iron also right about Chinese team using APFSDS rounds during last year TB competition compared to all other teams using HEAT and i will not be surprised to see something similar this year.

For those wondering why the main gun shells arc so much, I can link you to this analysis I did of a Soviet HEAT shell (similar to the one being used in the Tank Biathlon):
Sorry not sorry for the shameless self-promotion.

AZ means "Avtomat Zaryazhaniya" and it is not some sort of official designation of autoloader variant used in T-72/90s.
