  1. In the world of animea, the Shiden has a contra-rotating prop (Also the B-29s are unescorted for some reason, by the time the J7W1 would have entered service they were flying P-51s off Iwo Jima and Okinawa)
  2. Current status of my light tank design, 7.6 tons total; Will definitely gain a few more tons from addition of engine, rest of suspension, tracks, etc., but definitely should meet 15 ton target. Armor is 85mm LoS on the upper glacis, and 110mm LoS on the turret front.
  3. Aluminum is available and can be worked in numerous ways, feel free to make an aluminum hulled tank. As far as enamels and doron go (I initially assumed that was a misspelling of boron before looking it up), nylon and other synthetics from the late 40s are available. I also don't see a problem with using bolts to get standoff for armor plates.
  4. It has a high gun ownership rate relative to most other countries, and a lot of people get shot there. So, it's a data point.
  5. The light tank, currently at 7 tons (-9/+20 elevation, current armament is 55mm with 6 round drum)
  6. Minor leak on the ISS; https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacestation/2018/08/30/international-space-station-status/
  7. agreed https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2018/08/26/north-americas-first-known-sex-doll-brothel-opening-in-toronto.html
  8. Made a separate thread for discussion of NASA's Commercial Crew Program. Both programs are looking like they are going to fly in 2019; this would be the first time since 2011 an American rocket will carry crew. Exciting times. SpaceX recently put out a fairly extensive update on the status of their program; https://imgur.com/a/CIuhH0i
  9. Might as well post a status update on my tank; Considering all the other things in the tank I haven't (and aren't) going to model like brakes, stabilization system, recoil system, etc., I'm pretty confident that 30 tons is a good weight estimate. Which passes the smell test; it gives my tank about a 50% armor fraction, and it's about the same dimensions as a T-55.
  10. @Toxn You mind if I steal your 80mm gun as an alternative armament for my vehicle? (I'm not actually in the contest, I'm just modeling tanks for the fun of it).
  11. Average male conscript height is about 5 foot 8 (~1.72m). Enemy uses both diesel and gasoline. Technology cutoff date is about 1950, although it's not a hard date since modern knowledge is available. No, assuming the castings are done well.
  12. To get the penetration, the easiest thing to do is probably just use this penetration calculator; http://tankarchives.blogspot.com/p/demarre-calculator.html For the reference, just use a contemporary projectile (Jeep's site has a good page on the 90mm M3; http://www.theshermantank.com/about/sherman-lee-and-variants-gun-data/90mm-m3-gun-information-page/ ) 30% efficiency is a lot better than I ended up with for my first attempt.
  13. https://dailygazette.com/article/2018/08/21/schenectady-hiker-s-rescue-provides-cautionary-tale Don't do this.
  14. Useful tool for designing ammo racks; https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/circles-within-rectangle-d_1905.html
  15. Random fun fact: the Soviets did some testing of the Kh-80 on a converted Yankee class sub I believe it was that one (K-420, aka Yankee Sidecar)
  16. Placeholder 95mm projectile (tangent ogive instead of VKO because ) Weighs almost exactly 13 kilos edit: 26.3 kilos
  17. Not really, there's some limited mechanical assitance (i.e. to ram the round forward once you put it in the breech), but getting the ammunition from the rack to the gun is still done by hand. The obvious exception is if you have a self contained autoloader. Won't work for large rounds, but there's historical precedent for autoloading 75mm guns in this timeframe; This does have the limit that you can't select the ammo type, less capacity, added weight, etc.
  18. Finally got my turret to work (decent depression, close to balanced, gun doesn't smash the commander in the groin when it fires); Maximum gun depression is about 9.5 degrees. Model is still a bit unfinished, but it's at least enough to prove the bits work. Weight of the turret and hull armor (ignoring gun model) is about 14.5 tons. Assuming the armor mass increases to 15 tons by the time I'm finished modeling everything, and the armor comes out to 43% of the total mass (midpoint of the range listed in this post; http://sturgeonshouse.ipbhost.com/topic/1085-design-contest-supplement-typical-weights-in-a-modern-tank/ ), it's on pace to come out at about 35 tons.
