I'm expecting there will (eventually) be a backlash toward the idea of the "twelve pound Carbine AR", where people go back to the basics.

Brownell's seems to have had a good response toward their retro AR's, so there is hope that sanity is returning.

    (ETA-  "oldmanshakeshandatcloud.jpg" goes here.)

I think at various points I've been one of the 12 pound carbine people.

Even now I have a proclivity for the ass end only carbine and heavier barrel profiles than I really need.

And back in the day I had an AR with the hammer stock which was absurdly heavy and a patently bad idea if you liked your buffer tower.

I'm getting better about this now though. I have precisely one AR with a light on it and it's the I'm going to introduce you to Jesus for breaking into my house gun, which also has a linear comp so I make the other guy more deaf than me.

Otherwise, I don't have lights on my AR's because it's kind of illegal to pop shots off after dark most places.

IDK though, at this point I'm inclined to support anyone making, buying, or using whatever the hell they feel like no matter how outlandish based simply on the idea that I need to support everyone's rights to pursue this hobby/passion/whatever in any damn way they please.

The FUDD's fucked us once already, and if the other side can pull off another miracle of splitting us like that again they're going to make sure It's permanent.

It's fucking aggravating that you have to be a constitutional scholar and an ambassador for the entire fucking community at all times when you are even within arm's reach of a firearm, all the time online, and are pretty much reduced to a single issue voter in every election but it's kinda the situation we have.

I own some myself, but no way in hell am I going to do the equivalent of "Shaking a Jegs catalog" over them in a misguided attempt to buy skill /accuracy.

I get what you're saying, I run my guns pretty sparse too.

Except for the buffer, those I pretty much stick to the heavier end of the pool on so I don't beat my guns to pieces.

I just have to say that the bootleg Inc adjustable bcg would be much more confidence inspiring if it didn't state on the website it was compatible with all milspec direct impediment uppers...

THE PROPHECY HAS BEEN FULFILLED. SOON THE GATE WILL OPEN.

(HAHAHAHA! Four hundred bucks FFS. AR's are turning into the Honda Civic of firearms. ).

    Turning into?

They already sell loudeners too (the fart can exhaust system of the gun world)

And the ax head stock counts as a shitty summit down force wing by any sane measure of stupid.

It's ok though, even if people make fun of both the civic and the AR15, at the end of the day people will still buy and use them because they just plain work.

It's like you completely missed the point several people here have been trying to make, which is that painting an entire group with a broad brush based on the actions of a few extremists is dangerious and intellectually dishonest.

Or, maybe just maybe, I was making a very different point entirely...

(Psst, Walt... I'm saying I was making a different point entirely and quite frankly you'd have written some sort of objection and painted me with this same brush even had you actually got the point I was really making)

I know you really did miss my actual point though by the simple fact that you're nowhere near as irate as you would be if you actually caught it.

    LOL

    It's ok though...

And yeah I'm perfectly aware that there's "extremists" on both sides, to think otherwise about me much less say it... Well I'll just say that crack about intellectual dishonesty gave me a much needed laugh, thank you.

At this point though I'll refrain from actually spelling out in detail what I was saying as tongue in cheek and civilly as possible in my initial post, because I absolutely will not be able to do so in a nice way.

My patience for all the people out there whose answer to everything is you're just as bad as we are or other riffs on the same basic theme is pretty much at a complete end.

So it's just better if I leave this alone

Gee looks like Congress is well aware when it comes to their own safety that it's Democrats who overwhelmingly pull triggers...

If this alone isn't about the most damning social commentary about who the real psychos in this country are and the fucking farce that has been the last 30+ years of fears about right wing extremism, I don't know what the fuck will be good enough for some fucking people...

Alfies's parents do find themselves the centre of a lot of attention (& very possibly financial assistance) that they would not otherwise receive.....Do you think this might be a factor at all?

I would fervently hope not, but knowing human nature, it definitely cannot be ruled out.

However at a certain point the question becomes how much would you want other people having input if you were the one in this situation.

I've personally had the unique experience of panicking and waving off my own DNR/No extraordinary measures order at pretty close to the last second and being grateful for it. While also having had an experience after that where other people made further decisions "on my behalf" which it's really debatable whether they should have or not even to me even knowing that had they not made the decisions they did I wouldn't be here to write this.

If anything it has left me even more confused about where we should draw certain lines, not less.

These situations suck, and I do not envy anyone the personal hell of having to try and make the right decision one way or another. But as terrible as all this is, and as fraught with potential for real abuses and tragedies to occur as they are, I'd much prefer someone who knows me getting to make these calls over a fucking bureaucrat.

Is that the right answer? I really don't know!

It's honestly bit me pretty fucking hard having it be that way in my own life, but the potential for really effed up shit to happen in the event that we take the other approach just strikes me as a road we shouldn't go down.

Obama's credentials were a bit thin compared to some older candidates, but US Senator is a pretty normal resume for a Presidential candidate.  State governors seem to do better overall in winning the Presidency, but in general congress-critters are regarded as qualified for the job.  The unique thing about Trump is his complete lack of experience at any level of governmental service.  It's a true break from precedent.  You might consider it a good thing, but there is no denying that it's a bit unusual.

I could say the same thing about your devotion to Mr. Trump.  Anyhow, it might shock you to know that not all my friends are "Democrats", nor do I discuss politics with all of them. Life is far too short to limit ones social circle along narrow political lines.

    What devotion to Trump?

    Mine?

Bwahahaha that's the funniest shit you've said yet Walt!

You're so far off base here you're not even wrong... but it's still pretty fucking funny.

I didn't vote FOR TRUMP... I voted for NOT HILLARY and not the evil preparation H alliance that was the rest of the Republican pack...

So far NOT HILLARY and NOT MCCAIN/JEB is doing a great job of not being any of these people!

At the very least we get to see new and exciting fuckups rather than business as usual.

That's really all I was hoping to get and I got it that even before November 8th...

The two major parties doing everything they can to discredit themselves and the mainstream media coming along for the ride is just icing on the cake at this point.

So what reason again do I have to be unhappy?

Because the government isn't functioning for shit and fucking up everything it touches?

It was going to do this no matter what!

At least this way some awareness is being generated, and I strongly suspect the seeds of real change are getting the time to take root and grow just a little bit more daily.

Even if the Dems take the midterms Walt, the seeds that have been growing since that day in November all but guarantee that any "victory" your team has will be very short lived and pyrrhic...

And for that thought alone I wake up with a ghost of a smile every fucking morning.

Trump nominated an unqualified candidate to a cabinet level position without properly vetting him.  This has nothing to do with #resist, it's an entirely self-inflicted wound on the part of the President.

Why is it that the primary qualification people like you seem to worry about is whether or not someone hates Trump and agrees with you politically?

I mean if you really want to play the qualifications game, who the fuck was Obama to even CONSIDER running for president?!

He damn sure didn't have any relevant life experience and his public statements on the subject of constitutional law were a disgrace for someone who is supposedly a specialist in the field!

Hey and then we can talk about shovel ready jobs if you want! (Aka the only program on earth ran worse than the Pentagon's moderate rebel training pipeline in Syria)

Team (D) really doesn't want to go there Walt...

It must get really depressing having to defend the indefensible all the time though just so your Democrat friends won't shun you though, so I totally get why you're so bitter Walt.

TIL: There is such a thing as "funeral potatoes" which is apparently a casserole dish served at group or potluck functions and which is popular with the Latter Day Saints in Utah and Idaho.

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/nation-world/article208045964.html

So of course the Left is freaking out over the fact that Walmart is advertising the dish on social media since the term "funeral" might pop their precious social bubble.

Funeral potatoes are, in fact, fucking delicious.

But if you're not Mormon ex Mormon or descended from Mormons you cannot make them because that is cultural appropriation, and cultural appropriation is wrong.

Maybe one day I should write a post on Mormon soul food.

Edit to add: It's definitely not just an Idaho or Utah thing just so you guys know, if you go to a Mormon potluck or anything that involves food held at a Mormon Church or stake center anywhere in the US funeral potatoes are almost mandatory.

Weddings, funerals, post service project feeds, scouting events... Doesn't matter.

Whose bringing the funeral potatoes comes up just as surely as there will be arguing or some competition between the deacons and teachers to see which one has to put away the chairs and tables and which group gets to do the floors, trash, and help the Mia maids clean the kitchen!

Either way, I doubt the Saudi farmers would know that, so this could be somewhat lucrative, so long as no one tells the local sheikh or cleric ;)

The only glaring potential issue I see here is that not giving all the people further up the chain their cut is pretty much a death penalty offense in Saudi Arabia, so if you are going to do this I wouldn't hire anyone you're particularly attached to for your in country sales service or management teams.

    Interesting, thanks for the clarification.

Incidentally I get a kick out of your  gun setup in that picture, it's the reverse mullet of AR15's... Gucci in the front parts bin in the rear.

To be clear, I get exactly why you did it that way. It's just neat to see.

That ain't something I can easily search without being offered a million package holiday deals TBH.....Any chance of a clue?  ;)

Good old Hillary and Huma of course... I'm sure it was only a coincidence, just like the fires, and having a conversation about grandkids on the tarmac inside a secured airplane.

People are so suspicious these days!

Just because a family and everyone they associate with act like people who have a bunch of stuff to hide doesn't mean anything other than they like their privacy!

In a way it is pretty amusing though watching her have to work off her pretty extensive "debts" to people I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in hock to. She so thought she had her shit wired tight and an entire nation by the balls so it's very satisfying to see her now in the position of being an entirely disposable and deniable pawn to all the big bads she promised so much to and spectacularly failed to deliver.

  13.  The balance shift is definitely nice.

The reason I asked sturgeon the question I did is because I'm pretty sure I run my stock multiple clicks further inward than he does and thus likely get most of the same benefits from a 16 as he would from a 14.5.

Me and the people I shoot with are basically midgets/ the size of people who aren't quite old enough to drive yet though so our experiences and preferences sometimes diverge from those of full sized humans LOL.

It's not too bad, since we're talking about USB charger levels of power.

Using off-the-shelf stuff I reckon you can make one for something like $350. Which means that you'd sell your kits for something like $500.

Which is an expensive way to charge a phone, but well within the price range for overpriced office toys.

When you said $10,000 I was thinking what sort of single system you could build for $10,000.

Assuming you used something relatively cheap to construct for the steam engine itself (ie green steam engine or "Tesla turbines") and depending on the heat source etc you were choosing to use you could bash together something around 3 kilowatts with $10,000 without having to resort to too much scary adhoccery.

I specifically listed the green steam engine and the "Tesla Turbine" for a few very specific reasons.

    1. If you value your life your pressure vessel and fittings are going to eat a huge portion of your budget so you're not going to have a bunch of money for the actual engine.

    2. I know that they both work and there's design tools out there that will help you figure out the specifics of size etc for a given power rating. And both designs are very scalable within the 1 watt to 10 kilowatt range.

    3. They can be made with relatively little expensive machining. This includes things like matching actual shaft rpm to the rpm needed to drive your actual generator at something approaching proper speeds with minimal need for super complex gearing etc.

So long as they're doing it far from civilisation, surely it's a self-limiting problem?

Trailer parks have zero lot lines though, and flash heating a fuck ton of anhydrous ammonia and other goodness before the windows and outer skin of the trailer can fully let go could create some pretty epic havoc all on it's own.

That's before you even consider the insane hazmat situation you'd instantly create.

Then again I was also thinking somewhere in the 1-7.5 kilowatt range.

Steam is really neat and everything right up to the point where it goes wrong.

  17. 7 hours ago, Toxn said:

For you, I have an even better (long-running) project: An attractive tabletop steam engine running a small generator and inverter unit.

Now, if I can just get about $10 000.00 in seed funding...

Steam generators seem like an awesome idea until you figure out how much it's gonna cost to make the little fuckers...

Well, and realize just how frightening the idea of leaving untrained survivalist types unsupervised around pressure vessels is. Especially when you just know they're gonna use this shit to power their meth labs.
