When it came to rifles, the US really was stuck in the past. However, they would leapfrog everybody later in the 1960s.
Heck, the Lee Enfield was being manufactured until 56. Manufacture of the L1A1 started in 57...

Americans were still building new Springfields until 44. So... Yeah.

Stealing from our glorious forum leader's latest blog post, a pic of the VHS-2. Croatian assault rifle. I think it looks neat. Be interesting to see performance/test data from the French competition and see how it performs.

Menacing, sleek, futuristic design! And I don't recall that they made enough of them to be the standard weapon. Edit: 400kish made, along with 400k G/K 43s... Ok... I was off on that.

I remember Dale Brown’s flight of the Old Dog. I read it when I was a teen. B-52s are cool and stuff.
I just picked up a copy of Flight of the Intruder by Stephen Coonts. I read it about the same time as Old Dog.
B-52s modified with stealth tech, air to air weapons and every high tech paper weapon project ever thought of are pretty neat too. Tho if Brad Elliot had his way Russia would have been a glowing parking lot.

Spectre SMG. I had a fanboy reaction to this one. First exposure to it was in the old pulp military fiction novels from the late 80s early 90s. Able Team/Mack Bolan and a couple of others. But they often had data files on weapons used in the books in the back. Saw a picture of this there, and got interested in it. Known for coming with a 50 round casket mag. I think it's kinda neat.

So do you guys have a techno-thriller guy to recommend? I mean, Clancy isn't the be all and end all, but I read fast and need something to read on the weekends.

Apparently ANTARES isn't totally impossible.

I've seen Gwar live. IIRC, opening for a Dragonforce concert I went to. They were overly screamy for me, but immense fun as a stage show.

Going to start the newest Jack Ryan novel that Greenly wrote, presumably from notes left over. Will see how the writing stacks up. After co-writing for Clancy, maybe Greenly can be the spiritual successor to Clancy.

Apparently these are pics of the 2S35 "Koalitsiya"
No viagra needed for glorious russian artillery.

Those are huge, heavy guns for the caliber they're in, even with a barrel that short.
They sure do look cool, though, especially with 40 round mags.
Heavier than the IAR variant of the 416. oO

As for the concepts that S-tank beat out, I've only ever seen the FTR writeup:

Such a neat looking Light tank/TD.

Chuck Yeager was very good at talking about doing things that would mean Chuck Yeager is a good pilot, no matter what the facts are.
Here's a big old source dump post on the subject of B-36 intercepts: http://www.tank-net.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9510&p=179123. The quote from Magnesium Overcast is there in the book, so I'm confident in the Big Stick quotes being in that one.
Thanks for that read xthetenth. That was interesting.

According to my book (amazon link), Kingfish would have had about the same top speed as the A-12, Mach 3.2 (pg. 181), while having about 700 miles less range, and slightly higher cost (also, the government was more confident in Lockheed's ability to deliver the aircraft on time and work in a highly secretive environment). The Mach 4 figure appears to be for an earlier variant of FISH (First Invisible Super Hustler) that would have been air launched from a modified B-58.
I think we were looking at the same #s.

Reading 'The Rod and the Axe' by Tom Kratman. A right wing gun nut utopian porn piece of propaganda at it's finest. Batshit nuts, but a fun read.
