Everyone says this, but nobody ponies up. I'm gonna toss a few out there right now. We've got rifles that are to be accurate, fully-automatic, lightweight (ideally under 9 lbs.). They are general-issue for combat, security, patrol. They are carried by frontline soldiers, rear echolon security and service personnel, and by troops in non-combat zones like aid missions and the like. The new word should describe its features, its intended use, and capture its prevalence.

-Service rifle: No nation is using Mosins and Garands as their main armament, and things like M14s and other EBRs are outnumbered by a large factor. I like to think that if we're talking about Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan, if someone says "service rifle." we've provided enough context for what we're talking about. So if some pedantic turd says "what do you mean service rifle? It doesn't narrow it down beyond Krag, Garand..." we'd have probable cause to slap them in the mouth. It also sounds proper and separates military from civilian, so the internet commentor crowd don't have to die on that fucking hill they've been camping on. Unfortunately would be hard to lump really early stuff like the Fedorov with the term.

-Auto rifle: Simple and to the point. These rifles are just as accurate, if not more-so than their ancestors. Except now they all have fully automatic capabilities. Why not just acknowledge their distinctions? Also the distinct description bonus of "service rifle," but easier to grandfather in older rifles. Con: May cause confusion with semi-auto rifles.

I'm really missing having single player campaigns, especially now that we're actually getting tank/plane/chopper games again.

You have to be stupid to fuck up fried chicken. That's typically why Popeye's, Chick, or even KFC are more tolerable than any other fast food place by a mile.

    It's a surprisingly civil, not-stupid conversation, too.

I'm sorry, but that argument is as weak to me as mine was to you. I'm not going to take arguments like books/red meat the same, as they are fundamentally different from what is created as an intended weapon. My concern is that at the current rate, we will only get more gun control whether we like it or not, so the gun community and lobbyists are going to have to think really hard about what their arguments are going to be further down the road.

Working in food, I've seen states and countries ban food here because the fervent sanctimommies hear "something something microbes" about say, certain types of cheese, that it gets banned due to apathy and misinformation. Now making certain types of artisinal breads, cheeses, and meats are straight-up illegal due to lobbying and lack of any sort of strong "pro-food" base. Guns are not out of the equation. The problem with arguing gun control is that there is more of a passion now against them than ever, while at most other times it was indifference, with exceptions perhaps in the prohibition era. There are people actively rooting against gun ownership, and the apathetic types who live just fine without a gun, so we're going to need something besides "guns are a right, no dice" because there are people that are just not going to be convinced.

My dad watches that awful show. He used to watch it seriously, but makes fun of it now, too. We've discussed drinking games for it, and some great ones would be if you took a shot every time:

-A sentence starts with "I strongly believe."
-Someone talks about a "rare opportunity" to stand around picking their asses
-A person's name is listed with no job underneath it besides "Oak Island Theorist/Enthusiast"
-They excuse a failed expedition experiment with things like "Well, we narrowed down a quite a bit, so I'd call it an overall win."

    and many others.

Went through a spat of reading Poland's WW2 history around a year ago. Holy shit, that was depressing. My babysitter told me a little bit about it when I was young, but I'm guessing she held a lot back because of my age.

At work, we do them traditional style: soak corn in water and slaked lime for like a day, then grind it into dough, etc. But since I'm at home and fuck all of that, this is made with maseca, essentially a corn flour.  It gets a good taste, but the straight-up corn masa is in a league of its own. The filling is pork shoulder with home-made sofrito with some green olives. Lemmy is frame-right providing supervision.

Are the results on the trunnion/sights problems solid enough yet? I see people speak up against it, but they're usually using certified non-polyethylene trunnions, or mostly based on political opposition, so I took such claims with a grain of salt.  I haven't heard any other adopters of the rifle chime in either.

You really have to double-check Extra Credits. I stopped watching them once I realized they either would only read the WIkipedia page or one or two news stories on these sorts of topics, yet they really like to speak with authority. Their videos on things like gamification and addiction are proof of that. For some reason, James Portnow just happens to be an expert and well-read on everything, while providing zero sources for any of the claims in the videos. I'm not jumping on a wagon either way, but here's an article that has a different view:

Also, got my MP5 back from the good people at RDTS. New barrel pressed in and got my sear dropped in an ambi pack (and timed up and stuff).

God I forgot how fun these are to shoot.

One thing I've always found goofy has always been that verbal tick of the gun community to say "that's a good round." They'll say it about literally everything that's commonly fired. Like, yeah, it's a good round, because it was either a)adopted by a large, renowned military and/or has been popular enough to stay in vogue over a very long time. The only rounds I'd say are bad are the ones nobody actually uses. I'm not annoyed by it, but saying a round that everybody uses is "good" feels like someone proudly stating the obvious, like "a dog is a good pet" or something.

I like that Ian's comment section tries, but it honestly looks like everyone who comments on his site writes stuff in English, translates it into a different language on Babelfish, then translates it back.

The original point was kind of lost on me. This is like when two Redditors detract from a topic and start yelling about who is more "logical" and likes "rational" things better.

A good soldier's a good soldier, and if the Army can deal with it, and get its rape/harassment shit together, I don't see any particularly negative effects of this.
