I worked at a place that (kind of) turned a blind eye towards tweakers.  I saw why they did, as you got someone who was a robot. Too bad their work was shit, and I was the guy who had to go and make it right.
 
Eventually I began carrying a Walther PP (against company policy) as I'd witnessed a couple meth fueled rampages and figured a couple well placed .32ACP's would settle things, or at least give me time to grab the grand-master wrecking bar and commence attitude adjustment..
 
The company found out, called me on the carpet where I said "As long as you tolerate meth use, you'd best damn tolerate my carrying, lest you want to talk to my attorney (A quasi bluff, as I had a friend who was a Maricopa County PD, and I had his very lavishly embossed business card with the hand written instructions "Call me if you need to sue somebody" on the back.).. Eventually they had a mass golden flow event, and canned the ones who hot-pissed, in exchange for my leaving the Walther at home.
Quality of work went up, My job was easier, and I did not have to shoot some tweaker and/or call my friend. Everything worked out.

It's a Savage 4C my grandpa bought in the '50s and my dad gave to me. This is the guy I always take on my hikes and camping trips. It's the only gun I have that's actually fed me. I really like it because it's one of the few .22s I've handled that feels comfortable for a grown man to fire and I've had no problem pegging rabbits and frogs at 100 feet with it.

That's an issue with how the military is being used (abused) , and idiotic ROE, not practicality though.

I can't see this thing being much other than a hassle and maintenance headache for the 99% of duties that do not involve being shot at.
 
It being pushed as a replacement for an unarmored 1.5 ton "utility" truck (blivet) smells an awful lot like congressional job vending to me.

More like the "Jeep" or 1/4 ton utility vehicle.
Right, I have no issue with it being adopted as a replacement for the heavy armor versions of the HMMVW, but the article reads as if they are replacing all of them with it. 
Which is silly but not outside the realm of nonsense and possibility tried by the DOD/WD.

You're thinking of a CUCV.  And for the most part they were decent.  They did have issues with the electrical system, and being an aspirated Diesel had all the sparkling onroad performance of a lithium addled geriatric.  But for a no-bullshit truck, they are hard to beat and made more sense as a utility vehicle than the HMMWV.

Shitty repark/refinish examples. I've seen a few where it's like they did not clean the blasting media off before assembling the piece.

You can find "slick" MN's, they just tend to be uncommon in the U.S., at least in their unmolested forms.
 
A lot of the ones imported here are pretty mediocre examples. Just like how most of the early SKS's imported were often force matched hashups.

I used to own a '72 Olds Vista Cruiser wagon. This thing left the factory with tiny 14" wheels, and had a 455 CID engine under the hood.
 
One of the first things done to it was fitting a set of the larger SSII Olds wheels to it, then eventually settling on a wheel-well filling P235-75-15" tire.

It was to keep from doing one of two things at a light. Either looking like an utter asshat as I spin and smoke  in a woograin sided wagon, or looking like a bigger asshat as I gently feather that twitchy mill to not melt the rubber and s l o w l y bring it up to 35 MPH.
