I'd put pears ahead as well, yes.

As for apples, we're one of those places that sends all our best produce overseas. Given that I then have the choice between a terrible, floury red and an edible granny smith I'd take the latter any day.

Oh sure, and spend all day trying to get the pith off the wedges and out from under your fingernails.
Watermelons are easier and better to eat than grapefruit. That should be obvious.

Today I learned that the NSWR probably wouldn't work. Showed Zubrin's paper to my nuclear propulsion professor, who had the following comments (quoted verbatim):
Geometry will not go critical at 20% enrichment Neutron flux = 3.5*10^17 neutrons/(cm2*sec),  turn steel to jelly in minutes - rad damage Power density = 232 MW/cm3 - yeah right Heat flux = 700 MW/cm2 - heat flux will melt wall no matter what Made many terrible assumptions on boundary conditions Back to fantasizing about gas core NTRs and Orion drives instead.

Yeah. When Zinegata gets it wrong, he really gets it wrong. Like cartoon baseball player swinging at a Bugs Bunny change-up wrong.
To call the guys and gals who volunteer for America's armed services "dregs" is not just insulting but wrong if you look at the actual demographics of folks who join.
Yeah. There are a lot of fucktards who shouldn't be allowed near a sharp plastic fork, let alone grenade launchers and automatic weaponry. But most of the guys are pretty alright, they join for altruistic purposes and they go on to lead productive lives outside of the service.
It's the same lazy prejudice that generalizes all sports athletes as spend-thrift, gang-banging, rapey, wife-beaters because a handful of individuals in the league are idjits.
So bullshit, I call. And respectfully so.

It varies I suppose. If the seal pulls the whole fish out and eats it, I wouldn't know because it's gone (other than the suspicious hole ripped in the net). But they do seem to prefer the heads because that's where all the crunchy nutrition is, Omega oils and what not. If you watch a bear on the beach eat a dead salmon, they'll crunch off the head, then eat the guts and eggs, then they'll strip off the skin and fat. Only then will they eat the meat. Whereas humans cut off the head, chuck the guts, get rid of the skin and eat the meat.

Truckfighters are indeed awesome, and yes sadly Frank Zappa qualifies as overrated. This shouldn't be a black mark on the man's work, however.

Nature provides the paper on the pinniped-TB connection here. Polynesian-American contact might have happened on the Peruvian Coast, but I'm not sure about the introduction of TB into the Americas pre-Columbus.

I'm hoping for Lives of Famous Whores. Suetonius is fun. (I know, chronology).

Serious biggest hope for Romain archaeology in general is Claudius' history of the Etruscans and/or his dictionary.

For modern popular music, I really, really dig Bruno Mars and his recent collaboration with Mark Ronson. I only began paying attention to Mars last year after I found that he was headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show (Go Hawks) and was suitably impressed with his retro sound and James Brown-like performance. I dig MoTown and Funk, having spent hours of my youth listening to used vinyls that my dad bought and resold in his junk business. I long for the days when African Americans artists produced innovative music with a big sound like the Temptations, Earth Wind and Fire or The Supremes.

Now Mars and Crew haven't reached those lofty heights yet but I'm more than happy to support musicians who can actually play an instrument and lay down a funky beat without having to sample other musicians or bray into an Auto-Tune.

If it takes a Puerto Rican/Filipino/Ashkenazi Jew and an Englishman who can lay down a slick tune like this when contemporary artists are producing lyrics like "eenie meenie, minie moe, I wreck da mic like a pimp pimps hoes" the so be it. I look forward to a future where rap is regarded as an embarrassing epoch in American culture.

Also, copy pasting from other small arms thread because I'm genuinely curious to this.

"So yeah, went to buy ammo for new G22 Gen4, only to be saddened by the fact the ammo store I go to was out of Buffalo Bore for the caliber (also known as John Browning's tears ammunition), and aside from "whatever FMJ target ammo is on sale that day", I usually don't buy anything else.

So, I bought Golden Sabers, but I noticed something I've never seen from Remington next to it called ultimate defense, upon unboxing it, it..... looked basically identical to Golden Sabers and had identical listed performance, but were quite a bit cheaper. I bought the sabers anyway as I've actually used them before, but, not finding much on Remington's website or googling as to what the [edited]the difference is supposed to be, I'm starting to wonder if I got duped into buying an "older", more reputable product for more and Ultimate Defense rounds exist simply for the reason of making Golden Sabers look better when you see them next to each other and they cost more, or maybe vice versa.

Either way, is there literally any difference at all aside from packaging and price?"

I guess one note is, I'm guessing the Golden Sabers may be better suited for compacts or at least tested in them, as I actually had them chronoed at the muzzle when firing them today because I like to test things, and consistently got 50-75 fps above the box listed fps. Would be refreshing if they didn't rig their test results with unfeasibly long barrel lengths and cherry picked numbers.

Well, we've gotten to the point that the Palestinian Authority is trying to get on the UN International Criminal Court so they can bring up "war crimes" charges against Israel. So the term "genocide" has really lost much of its original meaning.

But since I'm a terrible person, I just wanted to share that when I first saw Unstart's post about "What is Genocide", the first thing that jumped into my mind was this...

I actually was forced to sit through a live Allen Ginsburg poetry reading twice in my life.  I always liked Kurt Vonnegut's observation regarding Allen Ginsburg:

(For Doward's sake, Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl" contains the line “I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of the night.”)

"I like 'Howl' a lot. Who wouldn't? It just doesn't have much to do with me or what happened to my friends. For one thing, I believe that the best minds of my generation were probably musicians and physicists and mathematicians and biologists and archaeologists and chess masters and so on, and Ginsberg's closest friends, if I'm not mistaken, were undergraduates in the English department of Columbia University. No offense intended, but it would never occur to me to look for the best minds in any generation in an undergraduate English department anywhere. I would certainly try the physics department or the music department first -- and after that biochemistry. Everybody knows that the dumbest people in any American university are in the education department, and English after that."

So yeah, more copy paste wall, but this is another post I want preserved that I made in the original small arms thread regarding PLA grenade launchers, portable rockets and recoilless rifles, Olifant actually posted it on the firearm blog, but since the wot forum likes to delete things on a whim, I want the original saved here.

If you've seen it before, you can feel free to skip, I sort of revised some of the info compared to the original based on new data and correcting typos I found, so, without further ado....

So I have a Lab, and one of those infernal leashes.

I got the Lab, because my X wanted a dog, and liked Labs, and I had grown up with one so we got a lab. The X is long gone, but I still have the Lab, and she has been a great dog, even though she's always been cooped up in apartments or condos. She also isn't a full breed, or wouldn't pass inspection because she has black spots on her tongue. She was one of those litter labs, come by our house and check the litter out and pick, type dog, and I paid 150 bucks for her.  She has had zero health problems until now, other than a bad knee from an early injury. She's now 15, and I doubt she's going to make 16.  She has been a really great dog, she loves car rides, even crazy ones.  She went on all my off road adventures in the jeep, often on a bed packed on top of all the camping gear, with about foot to squeeze into. She was the first and only dog I crate trained.

She is a bit of an attention whore and intensely jealous of me giving any attention to any other animal. She will sit on a cat if she can, and take its place under my hand.  She’s never gotten aggressive about anything, I can take food out of her mouth, and one of the cats sticks his head in her food dish and samples what she gets while the dog is eating. The same cat often steals her bed. Anyway, her love of food and attention are pretty typical lab but she’s so not lab like in other areas.

She hates getting her feet wet, and does not like water. She can swim, but will not swim unless she falls in somehow. This dislike of water gets so bad she won’t walk on wet grass or wet/muddy dirty to pee, and just goes on the sidewalk. This annoys my wife. She also likes to get under the covers of the bed if she can. My wife does not like this either.

She has a throat condition the vet says is just going to get worse, and it’s going to kill her. Right now, she’s still acting normal so I don’t have to think about putting her down, but at some point I’m going to have to make that call. I’m going to be a pretty sad dude for a while.

Anyway, onto the infernal leash, in this labs case, I use it because I can let her go sniff stuff, almost like she is off leash, be still have her tethered. I never broke her of going nuts when she sees a squirrel or pheasant. She also likes to go sniffing around in ivy, yes, the same dog who doesn’t like wet feet.  The leashes do have a lock, and when there’s a need for it to work like a traditional leash, you just real the dog in and lock it. If there is anyone in site, she next to me with it locked. The only time I’ve had problems is when an unleashed dog came and harassed us. I’m also willing to admit I’m not the best dog trainer around, but I trust her not to bite people or jump on them and she does not bark at people unless they are strangers and I’m not around.

Now, I’ve seen the trouble these leash types can cause. It’s almost as bad as the people who just let their dog run free in places they shouldn’t.

You’d think people bringing useless dogs inside non dog stores would be more of a problem in Marin county, but I hardly see it, but then again, I don’t go out shopping much.

Fuck, all this has done is really made it sink in how much she’s slipping each day.

If ever get another dog, it will be a rescue lab, or a pound dog. Raising a lab from a puppy is something I don’t regret though, it was more fun than not.
