I've been looking through late 1950's issues of Infantry magazine (official magazine of the US Infantry branch.) Plenty of articles about how awesome the new M14 rifle and M60 machine gun are going to be. Also, almost every issue has a "lets look at the new Soviet Threat" style article. Every one of these articles refers to the AK-47 as the new Soviet submachine gun. I guess the term "assault rifle" was not part of the vocabulary at that point.

Thats as not uncommon as you think. Th. M.'s book The East German Army circa 1980 refers to akms as submachine guns
