So, what's with the Chinese producing RD-33 engines?  What was their original rationale for getting a license for those things?  Surely they never intended to make MiG-29 clones at any point.

   In the spring there were the first photos of the prototype of a new modification of the J-11, manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, dubbed J-11D. It is believed that the main feature is the upgraded version of the new AESA radar. Yesterday (13 November) on the Chinese Internet resources appeared new  photos which show the second prototype.

2016 airborne, things are going on schedule and 2017 (or, whatever the next pennant number may be) will likely have the full potential WS-15 engines instead of the stopgap AL-31s

Wasn't there supposed to be a revised prototype with different vertical stabilizers showing up at some point, to match the static mockup shown at Zhuhai?

 

The rear of the engine cowlings is sawtoothed, but the nozzle petals are not.  That is strong evidence that the RD-33 engines are temporary.
