So, it has been finally phased out of service. Do you have any official sources about this event ?

Pereh ATGM carrier was finally laid to rest yesterday (21/02/17) in a ceremony held by both active duty servicemen and reservists.
    Proper replacement will be found.

I don't think that's really an argument. Soviet tanks were designed with the principle of being smaller to minimize chances of being hit (though largely also because of bad infrastructure), and look where that got them - it cost the users a great deal of lives, cost them capabilities, and eventually they abandoned it. All that anyone ever had to do to counter this design feature was make a digital FCS (not those funky Chally stuff) that is reliable enough. Surely even a narrow turret isn't much of a problem nowadays.
I know there's a whole debate surrounding this, about whether the T-14 (or any future MBT) is going to sacrifice mobility to get better protection, or sacrifice protection for better mobility (current state). Doctrine-heavy.
Russia could have gotten that sweet spot in between by at least making a turret that is ready to accept various configurations, including a modular armor on short notice, but it didn't. They went instead with having a wholly modular turret, which means they can still change it (and it's a very good future-proofing decision) but they will not be ready on short notice.

Eitan and Namer set to receive 30mm cannon soon. Turret still in development.

I know very well the influence of ex-Soviet immigrants. I'm one as well, but their involvement in some of the more well known project at the time, was not substantial. There's also no way to confirm who was on the design team. All the available info is a certain Rafael division in cooperation with a German scientist (I forgot his name, sorry).

According to my father's friend, who used to work for Rafael and Elbit, Russian presence was felt mostly in optronics (night vision mostly) in both these companies, and automotives design in MANTAK.
It's important to note that armor solutions in the IDF are provided by IMI+MANTAK for heavy applications, and Plasan for light applications. Rafael only deals in Reactive, Hybrid, and Active protection.

I don't know shit about ERA, is there anything specific that's especially wrong?

I would be interested in hearing what you know about issues the IDF has had with the MTU 883.

Shot Kals were upgraded to 105mm before 1973, meaning they had those before the US first started sending aid and selling arms. UK was still the major supplier at the time, so it wouldn't make much sense to try and buy an M68 when L7 are readily available with similar performance.

Made some size estimates for the Eitan.
Those are rough estimates with room for error, but here goes:
    Length - 8.35m
    Height - 2.62m
    Width - 3.29m

    The Boxer in contrast:
    Length - 7.93m
    Height - 2.37m
    Width - 2.99m

Turrets, optics, weapon stations excluded. Only hull roof.

1)Another video shows an officer (I assume general) who, according to my hebrew speaking friends, said the armor is passive and explosive reactive, and also it'll feature an APS.
The authority on designing this vehicle is MANTAK, so I assume he's the CEO. It's as credible as it gets.

2)as pointed out earlier, the narrow door and sponsons (which DO contain NBC and AC like in the Namer) is a deliberate design feature copied from the Namer. When dismounting, the soldiers are temporarily highly vulnerable to enemy fire because they're occupied with exiting the vehicle. The sponsons come to protect them from sniper fire during that time. Only their legs are exposed but if hit, those will be non fatal hits.

3)automotive components are COTS and/or MOTS as someone explained in a game's forum and it's not yet clear whether this is just for the prototype phase or this'll remain during production. Either way, it's a great way to further cut costs.

Won't exactly call these bad boys "death traps".
First of all, they're coming equipped with a Trophy APS. and thanks to a 40mm cannon they'll put up a fight.
Second, I don't know any missile yet that can go through 2 layers of ERA and still pierce a vehicle's armor.
And third, unlike the previous incident in which the vehicles were destroyed due to lack of situational awareness, these will come equipped with Elbit IronVision, which is essentially a helmet that gives the crew the ability to see through the vehicle, much like in the F-35. Expensive, but the vehicle is still significantly cheaper than its competitors.

Besides, they won't go where the Namers go. They'll stay farther from the danger zones. Which begs the question: Will the Namers also get an autocannon?
