The War Zone just uploaded a series of pictures and an article covering the different items exhibited at AUSA 2018, including two Stryker mockups with the IM-SHORAD and 30/40mm RWS (the interesting part of that mockup was the Trophy VPS addon for the Stryker) turrets, a Bradley with Samson 30 turret, and more. EDIT: it's the right thread this time. Thank God, I was starting to wonder if I had recently contracted the Frank Drebin virus or something.

/facepalm I keep posting in the wrong threads today. Still no breakthrough in brain cell transplant technology lately? I might be in need of good news here... Mods, please delete this.- 1,911 replies

Training for parallel parking on Mars? Uh...okay, sure. Is this legit or is it a publicity stunt for some movie or Netflix series? -
In an ideal scenario, yes, the gunner would traverse the turret in the direction of the threat and the commander can simply fire the forward-facing CROWS, but you can't expect every situation to be to your advantage. Urban combat, for example, can be extremely unpredictable with threats popping up anywhere at any angle because of the large amount of cover (I know you're going to argue that the tank commander should know better than roll into a locale where he can get boxed in, but for argument's sake, please bear with me). True, one would first assume the infantry would be the one to provide fire support in such cases, but again...we assume everything is going by the book and no bad surprises happen like with the T-72 below, which was hit on the right flank by a RPG-29: Additionally, what happens if the CROWS' cameras are damaged/disabled and only manual operation is left? That doghouse mount becomes kind of a handicap as it restricts the manual traversing angle (without the commander climbing out of his hatch, I mean), doesn't it?
-
Still, it doesn't look like the RWS can be manually swung sideways much unless the gunner traverses the turret or the commander climbs out of his hatch and kneels next to the CITV turret. I guess he has to button down and remote-control the RWS to accurately hit a target that stands to the tank's three o'clock or six o'clock? (without traversing the turret - let's say the gunner is busy concentrating on another target)

Shamelessly stolen from Damian90 on AW forums: M109A6 testbed with the M109A8 turret and M907 ERCA gun (I thought it was a 52-caliber barrel, but apparently it's 58). EDIT: to be honest, the grainy quality and color palette of this picture originally made me think it was taken in the 1990s and depicted instead a M109 retrofitted with the XM2001 Crusader's XM297E2 gun (the previously seen ERCA testbeds were also sprayed desert tan rather than olive drab). But then again it's not the first time we get pictures taken with potatoes, even in 2018.- 1,911 replies

...And Boeing snatches another win, this time in the form of the T-X trainer competition: http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2018-09-27-Boeing-Wins-U-S-Air-Force-T-X-Pilot-Training-Program-Contract

The XM360E1 isn't an ETC gun in its stock state, but the ETIPPS I & II tests retrofitted ETC capability into several guns, including the XM291 (ETIPPS II), the XM360 (ETIPPS I) and the M256 (ETIPPS I). For the XM360 to benefit from ETC tech, you have to mount a big, high energy density capacitor block to the turret (or find a big, spare compartment in the hull to stash it in) to fuel the firing circuit, like they did with the XM8 Lightning Bolt demonstrator. http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a476392.pdf P.S. That document refers to the XM360 as XM36. Typo?

Movie tanks and terrible Vismods

The guys who made the film "USS Indianapolis" (starring Nicolas Cage) would like you to hold their beer while they proceed to lower the bar. For some reason, that Portland-class cruiser was in the middle of mutating into an Iowa when the Japanese decided to voice their disapproval. So...yeah, the CGI guys are occasionally capable of utter blasphemies that simply elude our understanding. Sorry for the naval digression, I just felt I had to post it in response to Conner Webb's statement. -
I'm also a bit dubitative on USAR suddenly having the funds to create and build a whole new turret with a new gun and autoloader AND possibly a new armor pack (NEA/NGAP or NGAP v1.1?) for the entire vehicle. I know they cancelled a bunch of proposed upgrades lately (thus freeing some of the moolah) but suddenly proposing an A3 when the M1A2D has just started development sounds too good to be true in my book. It's true that they've been meaning to give the hypothetical M1A3 a XM360E1 since the FCS program and that jamming a Meggitt horizontal compact autoloader into the turret bustle is something they've been talking about for a while already, but money has always been the ultimate c**kblocker to this multitude of wet dreams and Drummond's prediction seems a bit too good to be true. If anything, I expect them to continuously upgrade the Abrams using the SEPs rather than one big, instant package. That said...if they did actually manage to unlock a couple billions to finance R&D and acquisition, good for the Abrams.

I swear, there's something wrong with me today on the cognitive plane...I got the tank names wrong. TWICE. Gimme the dunce cap, I deserve it. I'll stop posting until I can properly read and identify tank names...or else I'll end up posting highly improbable pictures of the Bob Semple tank standing next to the Kugelpanzer. EDIT - Ramlaen, you once asked for a pic of the "Gavin" (*washes mouth with bleach and aqua regia*) and a Bradley for size comparison...and there's this CG here that shows the difference in size between the AMPV (close enough, right?) and a M113:
