  1. Eh, that's the so-called HD-40T Wombat ("Highly Deployable 40-ton Tank"), some sort of extremely low-profile precursor/testbed to the FCS, and there's extremely little information available about that weird thing. Given that I'm not blessed with glossolalia, I can't even vouch for the Russian link I just posted (there's a short mention of it in this book, though, which is where I got the "HD-40T" name from). The only other available footage about the Wombat is a Discovery Channel documentary...and I'm pretty certain the Wombat (as shown above) is nothing more than two trackbelts mated to a steel chassis, an engine and plywood all around. More about the aforementioned FMBT: http://www.dtic.mil/get-tr-doc/pdf?AD=ADA289121
  2. Wasn't that railgun (or at least its current incarnation, the Blitzer) a land-only platform, with BAE concentrating on shipborne? Or is GnAt now considering adapting it to ships?
  3. *Looks at LoooSeR's pics a couple posts above* *Back at Bronezhilet's post* ... ... You mean, "guess the ATGM version"?
  4. Doesn't look too shabby compared to what "Dr." Kwadwo Safo tried to sell to Ghana:
  5. Naaaah, he's just getting ready for the next Burning Man. The only thing missing is the steampunk goggles and the stink bug infestation.
  6. A Filipino LAV-300, I surmise? Better not get that cardboard wet, boys. Remember that Mindanao's standing right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean's typhoon birth canal. XD
  7. In French, un trompe-la-mort (yeah, hyphens) means someone who either doesn't fear death or had a close brush with it. Can also mean a stuntman or daredevil. ---- The more you know!(tm)
  8. MPF = Mobile Protected Firepower It's not an Abrams, but more like another attempt to field a light tank like the M8 AGS, meant to support IBCT troops and conduct armored reconnaissance, all of that with minimal logistic requirements. There are already several candidates/offerings like the GDLS Griffin (an ASCOD2 with a stripped-down Abrams turret and XM360 gun) or ST Kinetics' NGAFV. IIRC, BAE is also considering pushing forward its updated M8 (recently spotted at AUSA) for this competition.
  9. Yeah...some URL devilry at work here. Just copy and paste this, without the "http://" part: www.dtic.mil/ndia/2005/garm/wednesday/borngen.pdf
  10. The ATK link seems malformed. There's a "/" missing between "2007" and "gun_missile". Same goes for the RH pdf, you should insert a "/" between "2005" and "garm". Just copy and paste these: http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2007/gun_missile/GMTueAM1/GloudePresentation.pdf http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2005/garm/wednesday/borngen.pdf
  11. I'd have nevertheless expected them to fill that gap with either NERA or slabs of textolite or rubber. Unless of course the Pakistani recovery crew already stripped such additions from the wreckage, but it doesn't look like there are mounts for them on the Type 59 turret in the first place.
  12. Okay, uh, need a small favor here... I remember someone (maybe LooseR, my memory is failing me ATM) posted some time ago in the Mechanized Warfare section, a picture of a Middle East/Central Asian tank that had a boxy-type turret (think Zulfiqar), but, for some reason one of the front "turret cheek" panels was missing (a road accident?), revealing a semi-hemispherical T-55/62/64 turret underneath the plating. Long story short, it was an old T-Series tank masquerading as a more modern vehicle and it wasn't a vismod. Anyone remember that and would be kind enough to repost the pic here? I'm not even sure of the country of origin, the tanks' names...so basic searches and Google are throwing up a lot of clutter (both dead and living pictures, too) that is a pain to sift through. Thanks in advance.
  13. @ 2:03 Looks like USAR is sending its ERA (from base to base) through DHL... Isn't that a violation of the ToS? ... ...Yes, I know those are most likely inert ERA tiles or mockups built for formation/training. I just needed a small chuckle this morning.
  14. Ah, Facebook. I was suspecting it was either a Twitter or FB post, since I couldn't find HR pics on army.mil (they really need to build some sort of unified news dashboard... ) or their Flickr account. Thanks.
  15. *rolls eyes* Finally. Now all they have to do is either retrofit the A7 Paladin with a 52-cal tube or perform a major necromancy spell on the XM2001 Crusader and the US Army will actually have a decent SPH that can keep up with its peers.
  16. @Collimatrix: They probably expect Trophy-HV to "plug" that hole. @Walter_Sobchak: You're not the first one to make that observation. The M32 ARAT-2 has to be one of the thinnest ERA packages I've ever seen. @Ramlaen: do you have a source for the pics? EDIT: no high-res pics, but more details on the mounting process: https://www.army.mil/article/183479/1st_bn_66th_armor_regt_install_abram_reactive_armor_tiles
  17. Wasn't it always supposed to be Trophy-HV for M1, Iron Fist for Bradley/Stryker/other APCs and Iron Curtain for Humvees and whatever remains? I'm more interested in whether they are anywhere close to trying out that autoloader experiment (probably Meggitt's AL; the XM91 was most likely tailored for the CATTB turret rather than the base M1A1) that they hinted at a couple weeks ago. Sounds very ambitious.
  18. Oh, LOSAT still seemed to have some antistructural capabilities according to the video, but you'd constantly have to worry about collateral damage when in a cluttered environment. The other issue is that the missile is designed from the get-go to be a hard sprinter and not a loiterer, so it cannot regulate its speed and perform tricks like top attacks (which would reduce risk of CD) or even last-minute adjustment/aborts. It's literally made for battlefields like the Fulda Gap and not urban territories. Interestingly, there once was a plan to fit the LOSAT on a turretless Bradley:
  19. @Mighty_Zuk: this "little" baby would've been an even niftier toy, sheer size and lack of high maneuvrability put aside. The space opera SFX would bring a smile to the gunner every time... How would it fare against NERA, compared to a regular APFSDS? (let's say a DM-53 or M829A2)
  20. Are there any known cutaways/schematics of SLERA armor? Is it just NERA armor with minute doses of explosives mixed into the rubber layers or is it something else entirely?
  21. Not sure this is the right place to ask, but does anyone have high-res blueprints/schematics of the M1A2? (preferably with TUSK v2) I recently started learning 3ds Max and I thought the Abrams might be a nice little guinea pig for my modeling experiments, since the tank has a lot of angles (I seem to have bad luck with curves and all that, so T-series are out of the picture for now) and details that can be duplicated (like the M32 ARAT-2 array). It doesn't matter if it's official/unofficial or even from model kits, for as long as it can be used to build a "virtual studio". Just so I'm clear, I'm looking for something like this, preferably high-res, not too grainy, and with all profiles at the same scale. Oh, and of course, it should be accurate. (click to expand) Thanks in advance.
  22. Maybe he meant lateral protection? (around the turret basket area) I know the ARAT-1+2 array and the skirts do add some protection especially against HE/HEAT, but I still feel those flanks are rather vulnerable against KE.
  23. I suppose the said fluid would work better if it had its own, fully isolated compartement, rather than being used to fill the space armor cavity? (where the angled plate array is) Combining the two types compartments wouldn't necessarily result in higher protection against CE. P.S. Goddamnit, for some reason these days I keep forgetting to type half of my pronouns and definite articles. It's really starting to bug me.
