I'll agree with Mad Mike on this one. Burning the flag (aside from doing it to properly destroy a damaged flag) is a dick move.  But it's protected speech.

This is actually a big deal in Russian historical circles. For the uninitiated, here's a quick summary:

In the fall of 1941, Panfilov's 316th Rifle Division fought against German tank armies in the defense of Moscow. They fought at Volokolamsk and did a pretty damn decent job considering that they had no proper anti-tank weapons aside from anti-tank rifles. The result of the division's fighting earned it an Order of the Red Banner and the title of Guards (8th Guards Rifle Division).

Soon after, a story appeared in Soviet newspapers about a company of 28 men who destroyed 14 tanks at Dubosekovo at the cost of their lives. Conveniently, the journalist who wrote the story did not witness the battle. A lot of details he writes in the story don't add up, plus some of the men who allegedly died turned up later in the war, embarrassingly enough one of them was a German collaborator.

Documents-wise (since we all love our documents), there is no record of this feat in the journal of the division (the division claims 4 tanks in that sector) and no German record was found. However, aerial photographs show trenches in the area and archaeologists discovered about 700 bodies in the vicinity.

Most positions on the issue seem to be that while the myth of 28 Panfilov's Men is just a myth, the entire division fought heroically and there's nothing wrong with a movie about that. Calling the movie "28" lets them hook onto a nice story for marketing purposes. However, there are always outliers, like the usual suspects calling everything Soviet a lie and the opposite, those who state that wartime tales of heroism are beyond reproach and attempting to investigate them is an insult to those who fought and died.

As for the movie, I haven't seen it yet, but I intend to.

It neither makes sense to give the win to the candidate with the most votes, or the second-most votes, or none of the votes. We've all been brought up to accept democracy into our hearts and love it and shit, but it's really just one tool in the toolbox for making a government work.

Within the context of how the American Constitution was designed, the Electoral College serves a very important function (and one it's - for better or worse - serving in overtime right now): Protecting the rights of the minority. The US isn't just a blob of people who vote one way or another, it's a country with many different regions that have different needs. The EC is there to ensure that the different regions have weight in the election of the President, not just the blob of people. It is also there as a fail-safe against obviously horrible President-Elects taking office, as in theory the EC can vote their conscience and against the popular vote of their state. However, over time this mechanism has been degraded by people who want the Presidential election to be more democratic, and many Electors are required to vote according to the popular vote (29 states, last I checked).
So right now, Walt, you shouldn't be decrying the Electoral College, you should be rooting for it to make the right (in your eyes) decision: For the Electors that can to vote their conscience against Trump. Wanting elections to be won via the popular vote doesn't help you: All it does it change the game to something someone like Trump or Bush could equally have won, given how narrow the margins have been both times.
As for abolishing the EC and making that applicable retroactively to this election... That's a great way to get a really, really ugly civil war. I don't want that, and I hope you don't, either.
Now, in my opinion, Trump's not everything you and many other people feel him to be. For me, his upsides outweigh is less tasteful bits, although it's not a good situation all-around, I agree.

What I meant with lineage is a non stop continuation of evolution if that makes sense. As in evolution of atgeir might have gone "extinct", and later on when the need for polearms came back - some other solution was created or taken. The translation 'halberd' is a bit confusing; did they translate it to that because that's the only polearm they knew and somewhat fit the description? But yeah, whilst I won't try to guess the possible shape of that weapon, I wouldn't be surprised if it was something pretty basic like early voulges, winged-spears and suchlike.
I remember having seen that blog, it is really good!

There is a type of  lineage from the atgeir in the fact that old Norse texts poorly translated atgeir and atgeirsstafir to "halberd".  We really don't have any archaeological evidence of an atgeir, what we have are descriptions from sagas. People have done some experimental archaeology and pieced together what they think the weapon would have looked like.

Of course this resembles a bardiche or even a longaxe.

10th century examples of ax heads, which you can read more about in the blog in the "general archaeology" thread if you have any interest in those.

If we only had good cameras to pack around back when I was in. I remember coming across an M1A1 that had slid down into a ravine and bound up its tracks so bad it couldn't move. They brought in 2 M88s to try to pull it out and couldn't drag it because of how bad tracks bound up and the sheer weight of the vehicle sitting at the angle it was at. The mechanics ended up tying a cutting torch to a series of tent poles, taping it down to stay on, and cutting through the tracks to release the tension and allow the 88s to pull it out. I distinctly remember that "boom" when the track snapped and I swear that tank lurched forward several feet.

Southeast Texas and along the Red River are good spots for decent white tail. It's literally hog heaven for hogs up past Bonham. I've a friend in Telephone with a few thousand acres that include about a mile of river frontage and a pecan farm. Good spot up there when I have time. When I get the time, I pretty much always use my Marlin 336 for no particular reason other than I like shooting it.

This is a thread about hunting, fishing, and otherwise obtaining wild animals for sustenance or other purposes.

I have fished and hunted a ton throughout my life. I can give you guys some great jerky recipes if so interested.

This is also a place to make fun of hunters. Because hunters are people too, and thus stupid.

This is a place to make fun of the "I gotta git mah three hundred mangum  fer mah white-tail", the "Damned black rifles ain't sportin", the "if you ain't spendin' $10,000 to kill a deer ya ain't really huntin'", people.

Because, my GOD. I hate that shit. I can't stand hunting shows. I can't stand the people that take it super seriously. I can't stand the people that don't clean their own kill or wait hours to get the skin off of the deer.

Then they complain about the "Gamey" taste of the meat. No shit you idiot.

Hunters can be so incredibly stupid, it's absurd. So flame away guys.

Because hunting is simple, 90% luck, and 10% common sense.

It's Thanksgiving, and I spent some time in a blind on a small piece of property my family owns. Went out today with my m44. My girlfriend went with me. But that's beside the point. Took a doe. A very fat doe. The fattest damned doe I've ever skinned out.

We skinned it out and put the meat on ice (What meat was left, really). Two back straps, two hams, and tender loins. Left the shoulders, since it wouldn't have been worth trying to salvage them.

203 Grain Brown Bear soft points, destroyed both shoulders and lungs through the rib cage. It took about 20 steps, and I found it in the woods just a short distance.

Deer run when shot. I've only ever had one deer ever drop within a few yards of where I'd shot it. And it was with a 30-30 (Don't tell Sturgeon). I've tracked deer for 100+ yards that didn't have lungs or a heart anymore.

Distance was about 70 yards (or 800 yards in George Hill metrics).

Bayonet was out. It had to be, in case the beast charged me.
