Priory_of_Sion got a reaction from LoooSeR in The Saudi Arabia is a Backwards, Laughable Shithole Thread
Don't look our ethnic cleansing of the Shia, war crimes in Yemen, mass executions of political dissidents, and funding of jihadism around the world, instead look at how we've become slightly less misogynist!

In my ideal world, we would use nuclear for base load, with the rest made up by other stuff, depending on what's economic in a certain area. Wind and solar could maybe be part of that second bit (my gut tells me few places without some sort of government subsidy), but you'll need something else for when those aren't working. I really like geothermal energy (renewable, not dependent on weather/time of day, doesn't have any catastrophic failure modes that I'm aware of), but like wind and solar it's limited in geographical effectiveness.
The best answer at the moment for variable loading is probably clean natural gas. Or build enough nuke plants to provide well over base load and use excess power to pump water uphill for use when needed (but now we're back to the issues with hydro like Don mentioned).
Coal is trash and should not be used. Even disregarding the implications for climate change (which I believe is real), shitting particulates into the air is bad.

The political "solutions" to climate change smell. The political opposition to climate change also smells.
Adams is right to criticize those who tie 2 hurricanes to climate change, but that's political theatre and not what climatologists are saying.

This bit from SSC bears repeating:
The internet acts as an extremely effective amplifier for crazy people. If you were to assume the internet to be representative, you would expect that the world population is about 15% furries, 25% Turks and Kurds arguing about who is more subhuman, 20% neo-Nazis, 40% thirsty bros and 0% women.
The extreme right in the US has been emboldened by Trump's victory. A lot of other previously marginalized political positions have been emboldened as well. Trade protectionists, pro-settlement Israelis, climate change doubters, old-school DEA drug warriors who want to crack down on medicinal marijuana... and lots of others. The only thing these people have in common is that they were previously marginalized.
Trump wasn't supposed to win. All the analysts failed miserably at their jobs, turning what would have been a stinging reprimand into an eschatological calamity for the political establishment. Now the world seems upside down, and a lot of people on the bottom are now feeling like it's their turn to get on top.
