  1. If they ever get their shit together and re-invent the ballista (inswinger pls), then they'll actually have a bomb lobber capable of chucking things accurately out to a kilometre.
  2. This leads to a 5.1 magnitude reading corresponding to a 40kt yield. Not exactly H-bomb territory...
  3. I've seen footage of these things doing the inevitable and throwing the bomb back at the launcher.
  4. I really like the orky-looking ones with external fins. It is also super interesting seeing the re-discovery of siege warfare, including siege mines.
  5. ^This. Adding: people are generally pretty bad at coming up with something new, but pretty amazing at recreating something when they discover that it is possible. Often there is just a simple 'trick' to the thing that needs to be transmitted for the whole concept become viable. Chainmail was a good example for me, as I tried for a long time to come up with a usable weave without success before stumbling upon an approach to laying out 4:4 weave by stringing the first links up on a line. Ditto the concept of tillering - you only need to know about the idea of distributing stress evenly along the bow by thinning the limbs and everything else clicks into place. Having the understanding that the Romans had all the tech needed to (for instance) make a primitive electrical grid, one has the strong suspicion that there are a huge number of other potentially game-changing inventions out there somewhere that we could pull off today if only we could think of them. At the same time, technologies tend to need the correct supporting infrastructure (including social) to become widely available and useful. So perhaps we're just not at the correct point for antigravity or whatever to make it.

  7. Ah, the hell cannon. Sleep well at night knowing that there is a giant jihadi air cannon out there somewhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kALCUBH5JIQ
  8. The third video seems to recapitulate our arguments regarding the end of the manoeuvre fighter in favour of the long range stealth boat. Somehow the authors never make the leap. Edit: I also approve of the background music.
  9. We're the land of SAB, so the concept of beer not being a 4-5% lager took a while to filter into our heads. When it did, we apparently all decided that slapping a 'craft beer' label on a bottle means that you can double the price at will. Hence, anything over 5% = double price.
  10. This assumes that there are first class people there. But yeah, their economy is propped up by oil and all the work (from street sweeping to designing the megascapers they seem so fond of putting all over their humid strip of overheated sand) is done by foreigners. Who the Saudis generally treat like shit.
  11. True in general, but I sort of think this particular issue might have had more to do with the fact that boundary layer aerodynamics are black magic and the calculations cannot encompass all the fuckery that turbulence will do to ejector efficiency.
  12. I'm rooting for Iran here; on the slim basis that I know a few Iranians and that literally everything I've heard about Saudi Arabia (lots of South Africans work there in various capacities) makes it seem like a complete shithole with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
  13. Designs like these convince me that the designers were paid by the engine...
  14. {stolen from an article on Cobray} The Judge: because we're Taurus, and we're just full of terrible ideas!
  15. The only good decision Sisyphus could make was to simply stop pushing the fucking rock.
  16. Relevant: http://www.forgottenempires.net/aoak Apparently introducing African history into a history game comes just after the introduction of Slavs, who in turn get to sit waaay behind the freaking Spanish.
