  1. Doesn't seem like the US Army is going to return those LAV-A2's any time soon.

  3. At the Association of the U.S. Army's Global Force Symposium in Huntsville last week, Boeing displayed an upgraded model of the Avenger weapons system, which replaces the Stinger and .50 cal. cannon with the AIM-9X Sidewinder, AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire and a small directed energy (laser) weapon. "We're going to mount one just like this on a Stryker vehicle, and we're gonna mount the arm with this same missile capability on a Bradley," said Jim Leary, Boeing's Director of Integrated Air & Missile Defense and Directed Energy, adding that "what we're trying to do is put this launcher on a survivable vehicle that can go forward with the maneuver force."
  4. You are not wrong that American ships have a light armament outside of their VLS cells, and it is hard to quantify EW/decoys. But 90-122 cells is a hell of a lot of missiles, and it will get silly if we build some those BMD ships based on a San Antonio hull. Some graphics from the .pdf I posted in the other thread. I am not sure if these loadouts are guesses or actually based on something, but for comparison the strike on that Syrian airfield would require more than a 25% loadout of Tomahawks.
  5. WINNING THE SALVO COMPETITION REBALANCING AMERICA’S AIR AND MISSILE DEFENSES
  6. Ok I understand the distinction you are making, although I strongly disagree with the idea that a Burke or Tico are lightly armed for their tonnage. When I get home I will post a graphic of their mk41 loadouts.
  7. Can you elaborate on this part, it strikes me as contradictory.

  9. I would argue that larger carriers are more suited for offensive warfare than smaller carriers. Being able to have 'force multipliers' like electronic warfare and airborne early warning aircraft while still having an effective strike compliment will make or break your ability to go toe to toe with peer opponents.
  10. It is not that carriers rendered battleships obsolete, it is that carrier aircraft rendered 16" (and similar) guns obsolete. So I agree with Belesarius, the relevance of carriers is tied to the relevance of their aircraft. I don't see them losing their status any time soon barring something radical like a proliferation of megawatt+ class lasers.

  12. TIL of a convincing argument that blackberries/brambles are a carnivorous plant. -they are notorious for catching sheep in their thorns -when caught, sheep will stand/sit until they die or are freed -being curved, blackberry thorns allow sheep to get in deeper but not escape -why would defensive thorns try to hold onto a thrashing animal -a dead sheep is a treasure trove of nutrients for the blackberry
  13. It bothers me that Uranus and Neptune are being ignored when Uranus in particular has so many 'what the fuck' characteristics.

  15. I guess I am confused by this because the giant bugs were a result of high oxygen levels, not carbon dioxide.
  16. A March 2017 congressional report on solid state lasers, electromagnetic railguns and hyper velocity projectiles. May 12, 2017 version.
  17. For me the relevance/date filter of search results disappeared a few months ago, it used to be in the upper right corner of the results list.
  18. Various M1A2 SEP auxiliary power units. Is there a way to sort DTIC results by date?
