Ukrainian armor - Oplot-M, T-64M Bulat and other.
Mike E replied to LoooSeR's topic in Mechanized Warfare
Glorious Lyiv engineering is good for making Armata tanks burn! -
Can a MiG-21 actually outturn it? AFAIK the F-35 can retain more energy than the F-16 could, and contrary to MSM reports, it is more maneuverable.

FTA is full of crap, half-baked propaganda as always. "It is doubtful, however, that Russia can afford yet another fighter" - They have this delusion that the PAK-FA program is screwed, and can't be afforded, because of a change in procurement orders. All prototypes will be in the air by mid to late next year, and one of them is rumored to be a testbed for the Izd.30 engine...while the lot of them will incorporate a stiffer frame among other small improvements. All of this is basically going to plan, and once the initial 12 models are delivered, production will be kicked in. "MiG’s design may aim" - It *will* be smaller, lighter, and less expensive. This has been obvious for decades at this point. Anyway....seeing the 1.44 will be very cool, more so if it makes a flight.

AW has the new server up, I'm going to test it out.

That in itself is also an invalid argument... BVR combat is great when flying up against aircraft of significantly lesser BVR capability, but in a lot of cases it won't work this way. The F-35 is designed to link up with other C4ISR capable AWACS/ELINT to track enemy aircraft, and even fire upon them. Doing this keeps the aircraft "invisible" because it can keep its' radar system in a passive state. This is fine unless your *enemy's priority is to destroy said aircraft, and disable communications. PLAAF has stated this is how they'd work on the USAF, and certainly the same is true for RuAF.* In which case each F-35 would need to work independently, use their radar systems, and inevitably get located doing so...there goes the "stealth advantage".

Sprey is irrelevant, and that comes from someone that used to take his word (with a grain of salt). His group advocated a small, lightweight fighter in the 60's and that had an influence on the F-16...but when the design was finalized, *they complained because they didn't want advanced avionics, at all*. That says it all. Aspect ratio really isn't a valid mean of judging an aircraft's' performance, for better or worse.

~7 mm of penetration isn't enough to penetrate the outer layer of Kontakt-5 (as an example), so the DPICM could possible set off ERA, depending on what model it is. What are curved plates on top of TUSK ERA for?

NERA won't be nearly as effective versus KE than ERA for at least a few decades... It doesn't use enough energy, and honestly can't defeat rods kn the same matter as ERA. Armata's "ballistic relative armor" might be more competitive, as Nii Stali's president has suggested they have NxRA more powerful than Relikt.

Of course. I believe that some Iraqi T-72's were not downgraded, rather older models as noted. However, many of them (namely the ones mistaken as the "Asad Babil") not only lacked basic features all soviet models did, but were also made out of just steel, had no IR filter on the light etc. It's hard not to call that a downgrade.

LCS to get firepower boost with Longbow Hellfires
Mike E replied to Belesarius's topic in Naval Discussion
It's armament is a joke in reference to the size of the ship. I understand they aren't meant to be offensively-armed, but even that's no excuse. Honestly the program, like so many others, needs to be cancelled. -
Eh I know the guy who runs that blog... He knows more on the T-72 than anyone I could talk to. Kampfpanzer.de has good information on -72 variants.

"LCS" and "fire power" don't belong in the same sentence, or paragraph for that matter. -
The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines
Mike E replied to T___A's topic in Mechanized Warfare
Are these equipped with the V-92S2F 1130 hp engine, or the V-84MS 840 hp engine? I watched the first round and a few of the tanks were really hauling it... I'm talking at *least* 70 kph.- 5,218 replies

Russia want to make cruise missile armed Ekranoplane SEVs
Mike E replied to Belesarius's topic in Aviation
But Lun was rather large, and fired the P-280. I'm thinking a smaller, faster craft that can store ~6 AShM's internally. -
Russia want to make cruise missile armed Ekranoplane SEVs
Mike E replied to Belesarius's topic in Aviation
A GEV that can fly decently fast, launch a large number of AShM's, and immediately land would be invaluable. Flying low to the ocean reduces radar return and the possibility of detection, so such a vehicle could remain un-spotted until launch. It also means the vehicle can float, so it could remain undetected by using that ability. It may be made by the same people that did the Orion-20 and -40. This is the O-20. And this the O-40...both seemingly could carry quite a few Oniks. -
M109 will be service for at least a few centuries, at this rate.

And just like that, you have lost all of my respect. If the Flanker was a woman...10/10

That is actually a great idea... Have satellites detect a launch, and Rods from God (or some variation thereof) launch a projectile to intercept. Moreover, have it engage while the ballistic missile is re-entering, to prevent debris from flying into orbit.

Still better looking than the F-35.

Ukrainian armor - Oplot-M, T-64M Bulat and other.
Mike E replied to LoooSeR's topic in Mechanized Warfare
Thai Oplot-M What round is this? Looks to be 3BM-1# series round, hardly new... It appears to be a 3BM-15 according to my eye. -
But they don't combine much of the other segments. I'm not saying the Type-10 is revolutionary, just that it represents what is to come of future Western (manned turreted) designs.
