Probably based on assumption that it is either made on base of what we had on hands in T-72B3, or that we are using Chinese export crap, both of which is a possibility. GurKhan had a comment on our thermal imagers, and he wasn't postivie in it about their capabilities.

I went to the range with a friend of mine the other day. It wasn't difficult to decide which rifle to take. While we were there, his AR was having some problems, and we needed some tools to take it down and address the issues. He starts looking around for something that can stand in as a punch; car keys, cartridges, knife, etc. I calmly walk over to the ever prepared Kalashnikov rifle and retrieve it's included toolkit, which I used to repair his decadent capitalist rifle, pampered and unprepared for use in the field.

Without me even saying a word, my friend looks over to me and says "shut up, just shut up"

Gun, at some point, every tank manufacturer was not a tank manufacturer. There's always a first design for a company, and there have been several times when these first designs were good. EE-T1 Osorio comes to mind, for its goal (cheap reasonably modern tank for third world nations on a 40t weight limit) it was a fantastic design from a firm with no previous tank work, in a country with no tank industry.

Development of future Soviet tank in 80-s and was a continuation of works started in 1970-s under designation “Project 101”. Necessity for development was grounded by the development of next generation tank in US and NATO. The importance of this task was well realized by Nikolay Shomin, a new chief designer of Kharkov design bureau, who replaced Alexander Morozov after he retired in 1976. The development of the tank had two main directions – conventional layout with 3-man crew and unmanned turret, which was known under designation “Object 490A” and later “Object 477” and unconventional 2-man design known as “Object 490”. The project “490” developed in the 80s was under development by Eugenie Morozov, son of the famous designer of tanks T-34, T-54, T-64 Alexander Morozov.
The main features of the “Object 490” were:
    - crew consisting of two people - commander-gunner and driver. Reduce the crew to two people and place them in a compact, well-protected capsule. Depending on the specific layout, this gives a volume saving of up to 1.2 m3.
    - the use of hydro pneumatic suspension. In addition to solving the main problem - increasing average speeds by improving running smoothness, it allows to control the clearance of the tank, which increases maneuverability and survivability in battle. In addition, controlled hydro pneumatic suspension by changing the hull angle allows to increase the pointing angles of the gun in the vertical plane.
    - Creation of a special armored refueling and reloading vehicle capable of accompanying the tank in the same formation, overcoming hard natural and artificial obstacles, passing through nuclear contaminated areas of the terrain, and operating under conditions of use of nuclear weapons. In layout no. 1 and 2, it was supposed to implement the replenishment of ammunition and refueling the tank without leaving the crews of the tank and refueling-loading machine.

Most NATO-member-made AFVs, especially for marketing, are made to meet a certain protection level described in STANAG 4569. It basically saves the vehicle manufacturers some of the time and money it takes to determine how much protection is required and where.
So you will usually see designs that are made strictly to meet certain levels. The norm is level 6 on the front and level 4 on sides, plus level 4a/b vs mines as armor technology allows more weight savings.
But some vehicles do deviate from these standards if the manufacturers are tasked with a requirement above NATO's. The Puma is one example of a vehicle that, as I understand, is marketed with a level 6 protection but can actually go somewhat higher, perhaps even 35mm at short range. Lynx KF41 almost definitely surpasses the STANAG 4569 levels in some areas, in its 50+ ton version.

Many MBTs are capable of shrugging off 35mm shells. I believe all can do so on the turret, while on the hull it would take for most tanks an applique if the tank isn't angled.
Leclercs and Leopards were built and sold with passive or the so-called semi-reactive armor that can both take such hits and survive consecutive strikes. Merkava tanks are built since early versions with high protection to the sides, and Abrams tanks pack multi-layered ERA on the sides that is capable of defeating such shells, at the cost of survivability of the armor.
Ariete is an odd one. On one hand, I remember reading it uses large chunks of RAFAEL's ERA, but I don't know how much of the applique is ERA, or whether I read it wrong and it's passive/semi-reactive armor and not ERA. Either way, count it in as a tank that can at least take a couple shots of 35mm.
T-14 seems to be packing a lot of passive and ERA on the sides, so the chances may not be all too great even after you pass the ERA, as the side skirts may have some passive armor behind the ERA plates.

So overall, you wouldn't gain much from shooting volleys of 35mm at the sides of modern MBTs.
But what is 99% sure is that no IFV will ever engage an MBT with such a cannon unless it was caught off guard and managed to spot the MBT first but knowing it cannot retreat.

The autocannon breech and ammunition feed are both considerably less intrusive into the turret:

The cannon feeds through the trunnion, so the feed mechanism doesn't need to rotate with the cannon and can be pushed all the way to the front of the turret wall.

I'm not sure how well this design would scale up.  Certainly an MBT main cannon would present some serious problems, like the fact that the trunnions are buried in the frontal armor package.

The ammunition is somewhat more space efficient than 40mm L70 Bofors.  The outside diameter of the 40mm CTA is the same as the rim diameter of the L70 ammo, but the case only about 70% as long.  Ballistic performance somewhat favors the CTA.

Tactical and technical requirements number 2456 for the development of a 7.62 mm avtomat for a special cartridge.
    Objective:
Develop and produce a avtomat under a special cartridge that would, at a relatively low weight, provide high firepower at short and medium ranges of infantry combat.
    1. Avtomat - an individual weapon designed to defeat single and group live targets of the enemy.
    2. The weapon are designed for a special cartridge, which has the following main characteristics:
    a) caliber - 7.62 mm
    b) the initial velocity of the bullet is 670-720 m/sec (calculated data are given for a barrel long - 500 mm)
    c) bullet weight - 8 grams
    d) weight cartridge - 16 grams
    e) the maximum pressure is 3200 kg/cm2
    3. The total weight of the weapon with bayonet, magazine, belt and accessories should not be more than 5.0 kg.
    4. The length of the weapon without a bayonet should be 900-1000 mm, and with a bayonet 1200-1300 mm.

4 months of WoT-free life, i start to see some colors around. Majority of those colors are shades of grey, as i live in St.Petersburg, city that sole existence was "Fuck you, Sweden!" and was build in a swamp with constant rain over it.
