    I had some political polling folks come to my house today. Despite the "No Trespassing" signs and the "Go Away" door mat, they still rang my bell. I shook my cane at them and threaten to hit them with the hose. If I had hounds to release, I would have.

    Surprisingly I was able to find good places open through that whole mess. I flew in on Thursday afternoon and left Monday evening.

    When I was there back in August we stopped at a relatives house in Brovary and the way to our destination. It devolved into a shouting match between my various family members about which side was "in the right". I left and walked to a bar. Good times.

    My mother always speaks Russian when she calls me and it takes a while to figure out who the hell is on the other line and what the hell they are saying.

    I speak English. I speak/read Russian/Ukrainian which is my first language, but since I do not need to use it everyday (and I am old) I forget things often. I have a slightly more than basic functional understanding of Irish and I know enough French, Spanish, and German to get by as a non-asshole tourist. My best advice for learning Russian is to be around Russians. If you can read Cyrillic, you should start listening to how people speak those letters naturally. TV and radio are a good place. If you have a large enough Russian community, just go to a restaurant or cafe and listen to people talk. You can to try to talk to people when you order, believe me, if you are doing it wrong, they will tell you.

    If there was ever a case for reforestation, it's Detroit. Actually, cities all across what used to be the northern industrial heartland are in a similar state of disrepair. Rather than trying to polish a turd, just let nature have it back .

    A friend of mine is at CES now doing live Facebook updates. Apparently VR and 3D are all the rage this year and some of it is not terrible.

    Isn't Rey a bit young to be Obi Wan and Satines daughter? Maybe grand daughter. I also said the exact same thing about Clone Wars and Rebels. They Disneyfied the animation and that ruined it.

    The only issues I see are mainly physiological and deal with bone mass and the likelihood of increased stress fractures in females under a combat load. These types of injuries make you combat ineffective and decreases the readiness of your unit. For the Army at least, aside from a few specific jobs (11b, 18x, 19d, and 13f) repeatedly carrying around a bunch of heavy stuff (which is when the bone mass situation arises) isn't really an issue, so females should be able to hit the ground running in those.
