Let's Talk Dark Souls

Recommended Posts

First, everyone needs to be caught up on the story.

Dark Souls 3 comes out in twenty days. Thus I have twenty days before my life is consumed once again by the flame.

Dark Souls 1 PVP: Pivot Backstabs

Dark Souls 2 PVP: spin spin spin R1 katana spam spin spin

Dark souls 3 PVP: ?????

Praise the sun, The Fluffy Tail, and may we never have another boss fight like The Bed of Chaos.

I liked Dark Souls up until the fire caverns and that tomb around the Bed of Chaos. It was then that the areas were getting really dull and BoC was just shitty. I gave up, but still left with a positive opinion at the game. If 3 mostly consists of areas like Anorlondo, I'd snatch it up.

Bed of chaos is easily the worst fight of any souls game. Thankfully, it's easy to cheese and I usually can beat that in a minute or so.

I just ordered 3. Now to see my GPA tank.

I have 3 characters in NG+1 or higher in the first game. The second game I exclusively PvP now because I've beaten it more times than I'd care to admit.

And I am proud to say I've never used dark magic or a katana.

I kind of don't understand the "it's not difficult thing." The games are difficult. They're not shit like I Wanna Be the Guy where there are cruel, unavoidable deaths for the sake of killing the player. The game has mechanics and obstacles that work with each other to create a challenge system that provides more rewards the more you learn and adapt, which is fine. But it's still a challenge, and that's not a bad thing.

It's kind of the reason why it took me so long to get into the series. I bought Dark Souls, played for a few hours, and gave up because I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing at one point*. I looked up online and holy shit this series has probably the only fanbase that's worse than Silent Hill's. Just a constant seepage of smug in every thread and comment section to the point where I just kind of ignored information and discussion on it. I remember watching a blind Let's Play and people were offended, offended that the guy died to Capra Demon at all. It's just kind of a race to see who can forget their first playthrough more quickly than the other.

*Turns out there was a path in the forest that I just couldn't see on my tiny low-res TV at the time.

Only because they punish mistakes harshly. This form of risk is missing in most mainstream gaming media.

When people can speedrun them in less than an hour (And a little over an hour for the second game), I wouldn't consider them unfairly hard.

I started DS1 completely blind. I didn't know anything about the game previously. The worst area for me was most likely Anor Londo or Sens Fortress, due to how exact you have to be in your movements and parry timing.

So, what would you consider a "hard" game? It sounds kind of like you think a game is hard if it's difficult or impossible to "solve" (making speedruns difficult or impossible), but keep in mind that really poorly designed games with awful RNG-crunching segments would qualify for that, as well.

"Hard" is relative.

Most things that I find are "hard" are poorly designed RNG elements and bad gameplay mechanics.

"Hard" and "Challenging" don't necessarily mean the same thing to me in this regard. For example, I just beat Ornstein and Smough on a DS1 character. Third try was the charm after I botched a roll or two.

It was a challenging fight, but completely doable if I did my part.

On the other hand, fights like The Watcher and Throne Defender from DS2 I find particularly "hard". Their bad RNS and design make them a royal pain in the ass, and I rarely ever attempt to solo that fight because I find it incredibly tiresome and annoying.

So as I've said before, while the occasional RNG roll will screw you over, the DS series is pretty fair. Just have to do your part.

I feel like Dark Souls should have chopped off some of the less interesting areas of the latter third or so of the game, but that's just me. I preferred when it was taking place in areas that were part of, or provided context to, the dead civilization, and places like Great Hollow just felt like padding to me. That's just my opinion though, as I enjoyed the game most when it felt like a medeival combat sim, and fighting beasts felt more like you were testing the limits of the collision detection.

I love me some good hitbox porn.

So I started DS3 last night. It was a late night.

I have to say that so far it has combined the best of both the first games and a bit of Demons Souls.

The best is the Matchmaking password filter. My friend and I could summon each other into each other's games within 5 seconds of putting a sign down thanks to it. Amazing work, Fromsoft.

The weapon arts are a great addition. Makes for some good mix-ups. I also killed my first invader last night, AND it involved the first parry for DS3 on another player.

It felt amazing.

Every night before bed, I like to get on DS3 and get 3 kills in a row. Doesn't take long usually. I like to switch up weapons on my Quality build (A build that can use pretty much all weapons)

I like using weapons no one ever uses. It's fun. Just happened to be using a sword that no one ever thinks about. But it's got poison in it.

And I've learned a few good combos with it. Went into a fight with a guy who had a really nasty weapon selection, but was able to get a poison on him AND some sweet counter attacks. We danced around for a while, until he stopped, bowed, and let the poison take him.

He then messages me afterwards. This is why I love this community. No salt, just an appreciation for a good fight.

Good Game, God of Memes. Good Game.

Decided to get on the other night and see if I can get my usual 5 kills in a row on DS3.

I usually only PVP in this game now. I've got some challenge runs I've been thinking about. If I can get a better computer, I'd like to try speedrunning. I already have a speedrun route thought up for DS2 and DS1, though.

Speedrunning DS1 is probably what I'll start with.

Regardless! I wanted to slay some people and the fighting in DS3 is amazing. I use numerous different weapons (have a lot upgraded fully) on my soul level 120 build. Let's see what I can do!

I get a guy in the arena. We bow. He's got a Greatshield and Greatsword combo (Just like that noob @Tekky) and he comes at me.

I think I was using a dagger this round.

I block his first attack, and parry his second. I riposte him, get the wake-up attack, and he runs away.

He went to a nearby ledge, bowed, and jumped off. He suicided.

Then I got the following message from him.

Always loved the Souls community. Some are salty, some hack, but 90% are good people.
