More complex. It depends on the shape, as well as diameter, of the gas port, as well as the characteristics of the propellant. It's a fluid dynamics problem, basically.

I don't know if there's a hard and fast relationship to ensure good functioning, but there definitely is a relationship between gas port diameter and piston diameter. Wider piston face means more area for the gas pressure to act on the bolt carrier, and wider gas port means more gas allowed into the gas block, so widen either and you increase the amount of force acting on the bolt carrier.

The APT did eventually get mounted to the M1128 Mobile Gun System, so those bits about putting it on LAV-25s were no joke. Or at the very least the Army didn't get the joke and thought GDLS was being serious and gave them a contract.
