  1. I know nothing about horse racing or horses. Back when I was in college I used to work at a magazine store, we would get in a special delivery every day of the horse racing newspaper. It was the only paper we would not hold for people behind the counter without them pre-paying first. I guess that says something about people that gamble a lot. I have a lot of stories about working in that store actually. There is nothing quite like having to go over and open the glass case full of the adult magazines for some creepy dude in sweatpants (they always wore sweatpants.) I don't really have any issues with Horse racing, but I am not a fan of dog racing. Back in those days I had a room mate that had adopted a couple greyhounds. They were absolutely lovely dogs and I grew rather fond of them. The dog racing business is pretty nasty, I am not a fan of anything where dogs are destroyed because they can't win money anymore. Other species? Fuck em, they deserve to be on my dinner plate. Dogs are special. Also, the sight of a greyhound running at full speed is amazing. My wife is much more of a horse person, she grew up with horses and likes them quite a bit. When we watch a move and a tank shows up, I am always like "that's the wrong type of tank." If we watch a movie with a horse, she is like "that's not the right type of horse!"
  2. I don't think I have ever noticed a Panther carrying extra road wheels on the back of the turret like the one in that video before.
  3. Random thought, what happens when these "men's rights activists" that consider Fury Road too Feminist watch a classic film like "African Queen?" My god, they must hate Katherine Hepburns character. After all, they went to a movie expecting to see Bogart doing manly Bogart things. Why is this prissy woman telling him what to do?
  4. I've only seen bits and pieces of them, but they seem pretty well done from a production standpoint. I am sure they are very entertaining, just don't treat them like a documentary (unfortunately, many people do.) Here is the one star review Bob Forczyk gave Band of Brothers (the book.) It's pretty epic.
  5. Jeeps is probably going to have to change his underwear after watching this.
  6. This is a must watch for all Sherman tank fans.
  7. You mean a 100 round magazine is not a totally normal and reasonable thing to have at an airport? Also, do those things even work?
  8. I'm watching the original Mad Max movie tonight. It's kind of awesome. Although, the soundtrack is really dated and not really appropriate. And the fact that Mad Max's ideal world consists of a wife that plays saxophone while they ride around in a pinto wagon with a sci fi themed mural on the side.
  9. I am in favor of anything with the name "gunship."
  10. Personally, I am all for treating ISIS with the same regard US soldiers showed toward the SS or the Imperial forces of Japan.
  11. At least he has a cigarette at the ready. There is nothing like a trip to flavor country after defeating the infidels.
  12. This video is a bit sobering. Recording from the downed helicopter Mi-24 APU. August 2014, Lugansk region.
  13. Well then, I will yell from the highest mountain how the Abrams should have had the AVCR-1360 diesel and that the AGT-1500 gas-turbine is literally powered by the fires of hell! (except I don't actually believe that....)
  14. Well, I do have a slightly irrational fixation with US air-cooled diesel engines, and a great suspicion of German MTU diesels. But I don't think anyone else really cares much about engines. In general I like the M48/M60 series.
  15. Mostly I did it to try to get some more traffic to my website. Unfortunately, funny stuff seems to generate more traffic than serious stuff.
  16. That's a very interesting looking suspension. Why do the third, fourth and fifth road wheels not have visible suspension arms like the front and back wheels?
  17. Are you saying that a 40+ ton MBT is not appropriate equipment for airborne forces? Everything is air-droppable, at least once.
  18. I'm not sure they have any of the older T-62 or T-55 tanks. In the wikipedia page for equipment of the Ukrainian ground forces, they only list more modern tanks. Of course, Wikipedia is not always accurate. Being home to the Kharkov design bureau, I suspect Ukraine had more than enough modern vehicles to equip their military after the break up of the Soviet Union, so they didn't bother keeping the older T-62 or T-55 around. That's my best guess at least.
  19. According to the German Wikipedia page for General Muller-Hillebrand, he commanded Panzer Regiment 24.
  20. The Israeli Army recently came to this conclusion and decided not to allow women to crew tanks. Israeli Defense Forces decides “No women in Tank Corps”
  21. the website Russia Today keeps running articles on the history of Soviet tanks, and they keep getting stuff hilariously wrong. For example, did you know that the difference between a T-54 and a T-55 included: The main improvement over the T-54 was the successor’s comprehensive anti-nuclear defense system, insulating the crew against the effects of radiation. The armor thickness remained the same, as did the weaponry, although the main gun and coaxial machine gun was now stabilized in two planes. The tank’s profile was also reduced by almost one meter. Also: By the end of the hostilities, the Israeli tank crews had seen how the L7 tank cannon not only outgunned the 100-mm D-10T2S cannon fitted to the T-55, but also the more advanced 115-mm U5-TC on the Soviet T-62s. The Centurion’s main gun had a greater maximum elevation than its rivals, which often allowed the Israelis to destroy enemy tanks while staying out of reach of return fire. - http://rbth.com/defence/2015/06/01/the_t-55_tank_from_the_school_of_hard_knocks_to_local_conflict_vetera_46539.html)
  22. Ok, I admit the thread title is a bit of an attention grab, but I thought this letter written to the editor of ARMOR magazine in the Jan-Feb 1951 issue is rather interesting. Someone needs to cross reference this guys claims with Soviet records of the era. A 356 to 12 (30 to 1) kill ratio sounds a bit hard to believe, to say the least.
