There is a quite a bit of interesting stuff in this DTIC report on the failed Armored Ground Combat Vehicle program. It has the added bonus of only being a three year old report, much newer than most of the stuff publicly available in DTIC.

Thanks for the info. It's odd that an English language version does not show up anywhere. Is it a fiction or non-fiction book?

RAVEN guns; a technology that's worth watching
Walter_Sobchak replied to Collimatrix's topic in Ballistics Science Discussion
Is the increase in velocity that this system allows enough so that it can fire an effective KE round or is the idea to get higher velocity for better range and accuracy with a HEAT round?- 21 replies

I don't know why, but in 1919 someone wrote a book about tanks in Swedish. It's not in a format that allows me to run it through a translator. Perhaps our resident Swedish tank expert can help us with this one? <iframe width="450" height="700" src="http://hdl.handle.net/2027/wu.89100067776?urlappend=%3Bui=embed"></iframe>

You just don't have the courage to state your preference for best can opener and then back it up with evidence. -

I know this is a bit silly, but lets do a game. Lets say you have to equip a WW2 era army. What infantry weapons would you pick? You are limited to weapons that actually saw production and combat use. Do take into account factors such as cost and ease of production. The only unrealistic rule I will set is that you don't have to worry about ammo commonality, since that would pretty much limit people to one countries weapons. The categories are: Rifle Carbine Submachine gun Light Machine gun Heavy Machine gun Anti-tank weapon Pistol can opener -
War is Boring is a weird site. Sometimes they have some pretty interesting stuff, sometimes it's crap. I suppose it depends on the writer.

I've never really seen any sort of report or study by the Israeli IDF on why the don't buy into the concept of the IFV. It would be interesting to see what their reasoning is for sticking with heavily armored APCs.

Here is a random question. I know that during the cold war they (unsucessfully) experimented with liquid propellents for tank guns. Did they ever do the same with small arms?

I just noticed that George Forty has a new book coming out. That dude has to be well into his 80's by now. Good for him I guess.

Marder I replacement begins service.

Modern vehicles keep getting uglier. That thing is hideous. I much prefer studying WW2 era stuff. Say what you will about a Panther tank, at least it looked awesome.- 21 replies

I have a suspicion that the L130 gun would have suffered just a wee bit from barrel sag. Still, it would have been very handy for hanging laundry out to dry.
