  1. It's really too bad, since old issues of ARMOR are really quite good reading. Hell, they even once published a piece by John Wayne. At some point in the 1980's it went from being the "Magazine of Mobile Warfare" to being "The Professional Development Bulletin of the Armor Branch." The change has not been for the better.
  2. To further elaborate, here is the first sentence from the article "Leveraging Sledgehammer Brigade to Build Enduring Partnerships." Seriously, what the fuck does that sentence mean? It means nothing. It's just random words and phrases strung together to sound impressive. Bah, I hate this sort of shit. On a certain level, it scares me too. The type of person that can come up with a sentence as terrible as the one above probably has zero ability to inspire or lead.
  3. Well, if we want to give the police a rifle that is more traditional looking, why not issue them the M14? After all, it's better than some silly little 5.56mm rifle anyway. *Cackles maniacally while hiding under his troll bridge.*
  4. Today I noticed that a new issue of ARMOR has been released in PDF format. I love looking through old issues of ARMOR, there are all sorts of interesting articles and letters in those old issues. For example, here are the article titles from the Nov-Dec 1952 issue: MOBILE ANTITANK WEAPONS IN ARMORED WARFARE By Colonel Welborn G. Dolvin TANKS IN POSITIONAL WARFARE By Lieutenant Colonel Charles W. Walson LIDDELL HART: ONE VIEW By Colonel Robert J. lcks THE STORY OF SOVIET ARMOR: ASSAULT GUNS By Garrett Underhill THE NEW ARMORED DIVISION ORGANIZATION By Major General Bruce C. Clarke and Brigadier General L. L. Doan HUMAN ENGINEERING-A TOOL FOR ARMOR By Captain John T. Burke SOME EARLY THOUGHTS ON ARMOR By Heinz Guderian et al THE ARTILLERYMAN IS THE THING By Major Eugene V. Brigham All in all, a pretty interesting list of articles to anyone that cares about tanks and armor. Here is a list of article titles from the latest issue of ARMOR Balancing Regionally Aligned Force Requirements with Readiness Requirements Preparing for Regionally Aligned Force Deployment: Raider Brigade’s Perspective Leveraging Sledgehammer Brigade to Build Enduring Partnerships Theater-Security Cooperation as a Regionally Aligned Force Armor Branch Reinvigorates Developmental Programs Arming for Impact: Empowering Cavalry to Enhance Joint Operations A Professional Warfighter for Any Platform Holy crap, just the titles of those articles is enough to put someone to sleep. I have never served in the military. Do officers really speak like this? I really have a hard time imaging the words "Leveraging to build enduring partnerships" coming out of the mouth of someone like George Patton or Creighton Abrams.
  5. Thanks for the replies, those all make a good deal of sense to me. The biggest complaint I have heard from people here in town is that they have cut funding to things such as neighborhood police officers and other ways of getting officers to directly interface with the people they serve rather than just drive around in their cars. Grand Rapids is a good sized town, but it's not so big that the crime is overwhelming and we don't have the issues that the cities on the east side of the state have (Saginaw, Flint, Detroit.) I think relations between our minority communities and the Police Department are salvageable, but when the public constantly hears about budget cuts and then they are told we are spending 300,000 on new rifles, it looks bad from a public relations standpoint. Most of my interactions with our local police have been fairly positive to be honest, although I am also a pretty law abiding guy. Heck, I haven't even had a speeding ticket in 18 years.
  6. Currently in my hometown there is a controversy over our Police Department's plan to spend $300,000 to equip 59 police cars with AR-15 rifles. Currently they carry a shotgun. This comes out to $5000 per cop car, a figure that seems a bit high to me. My question is two part. A) How often do police actually need a rifle? and in a situation where they do require a rifle, is 5.56mm ideal or would they be better off with a different round?
  7. It's not because I like Florida, it's just that as a Redwings fan, I must always cheer against Chicago. Also, Tampa Bay has Steve Yzerman as their GM, and all true RedWings fans worship at the alter of the great Stevie Y.
  8. Over at Tanknet, author Ken Estes was less than impressed with the Chieftains presentation. Baily was also clear that all was not well, He carefully documented that everyone involved was burying his head in the sand about the need, whether in Washington or in the field, up to Normandy and even beyond. He showed as well we passed up getting improvised Sherman variants with 90mm or 17 pounder guns into service, as well as improving the AT ammunition for existing guns. Charles M. Baily was an Army armor officer with a PhD in US History from Duke who also taught at West Point, 1975-78.
  9. Although from what I have seen, it does not have a commanders cupola on top of the turret!?! Jeez, why are they recreating the mistakes of the original T-34/76?
  10. Jim Warford gave me permission to reprint an article he did in 2002 on the turret armor of the T-72B for the Journal of Military Ordnance. It includes several pictures of the armor modules on these vehicles. I figured the Soviet armor fans would find it interesting. http://tankandafvnews.com/2015/06/12/t-72b-turret-armor-exposed/
  11. Probably no less useful than an ASU-85, which was the standard armored vehicle of Soviet airborne forces at the time, eh? Lets face it, any armored vehicle that is designed to be dropped out of an airplane is going to pretty much suck. (I hope Mike Sparks heard me say that)
  12. look out guys, according to International Business Times, the T-14 will have "ceramic armor." Why, I've never heard of such a thing! “Ceramic armor testing has been completed this year. All expected properties have been confirmed. Batch production has begun,” Russian manufacturer NEVZ-Ceramics’ chief Andrey Nikitin told the Russian news agency TASS. Armor that uses a combination of steel and ceramic plating is much lighter and 50 percent stronger than traditional armor composed of steel alone, he added."
  13. Oh hell, it looks like I am going to have to do a second book, Type 5 self propelled mortar system vs Porshe Cayman. Armored Vehicle Hits Porsche Cayman in Bizarre Chinese Crash
  14. He stated in no uncertain terms that the Lord of the Rings was not intended to be an allegory to the Second World War, or to any modern war for that matter. He dislike allegory in general and wanted his story to stand alone as it's own thing, not as a reflection of some other real world event. Ine the preface to the Return of the King edition that I have, he says that if his book had been an allegory to the Second World War, it would have been a very different book, the Hobbits would all have been killed, the ring would have been used by the "good guys" and Sauron would have been enslaved rather than utterly defeated. Or something to that effect, I don't have it in front of me right now.
  15. I'm more of a James McIntyre fan myself. He wrote a lot of poems about cheese.
  16. Is it just me or did that article have a really abrupt end, almost like the didn't post the entire thing?
  17. I'm pretty sure the woman featured in the video is The Baroness. Obviously, this is all a Cobra plot to get their hands on the Maus and use it as a super weapon.
  18. The best part about Bazooka Charlie was that his civilian job was a history teacher.
