  1. I declare this book to be required reading. Military Metallurgy by Alistair Doig. download here.
  2. The Celestial Giants have often tried to destroy the earth with their giant grenades, but fortunately the Earth is protected by Space Jesus.
  3. So, terrible music eh? Lets see someone top these. Lets see, how about if we start with some Shooby Taylor AKA the Human Horn: And then there is Jan Terri: And from my own home town, The Great Daryl Nathan! (I've had the "honor" of meeting this guy) *Drops mic, walks away*
  4. Sturgeon, have you listened to the new album yet? I got my copy in the mail last week, pretty blue vinyl.
  5. A while back I had posted this concerning alternate guns for the M60A2 turret. https://archive.org/details/GunOptionsInM60A1E2
  6. Who is SA? Cause I was the one that made that image originally. Anyhow, glad someone found it interesting.
  7. That's what i was trying to find when I stumbled upon this on google patents.
  8. I decided to dig a bit into the Chris Kyle thing myself. I found this rather interesting review of his book on Amazon: I embedded twice with Seal Team 3 in Ramadi and frankly this is just a BS novel. There were no signs advertising a bounty on his head. I saw none and nobody else I know who was there whom I've contacted ever saw one. I never even heard of Kyle until I read his book, yet I'm to believe I was sharing Metropolis with Superman or Gotham City with Batman! Hah! The fake punch-out with Ventura cost his estate a fortune. The alleged attempted carjacking somehow slipped past both the police and sheriff in the town where he claims it took place and where he killed the two carjackers. The shootings in New Orleans? No witnesses. The 160 "confirmed kills?" NOBODY confirms kills except the Air Force with pilots. Therefore he had zero confirmed kills. We have no idea how many people he sniped, but based on the rest of the book it may well have been just a handful. My first firefight was with ST3, and included heroes such as Marc Allen Lee and Mike Monsoor. (Ryan Job was in the other platoon and I never saw him until the Monsoor MOH ceremony in the White House.) I have incredible respect for them, and they showed their respect for me after the ceremony. But they have a few losers, too, and Kyle was one of them. Weaving tale after tale until finally he got the attention of a publisher and then Clint Eastwood, whose movie itself has almost nothing to do with Kyle's book. Fiction layered atop fiction like a wedding cake. Normally I would not put much faith into an Amazon book review. However, this one is by someone who used their real name and is a public figure. The authors name is Michael Fumento, his wikipedia page backs up his claim of having been embedded in Ramadi. Assuming this is all legit, it's rather interesting.
  9. Reading through the articles Zin posted, I found this. 7. Did Kyle’s father invent the ‘sheep, sheepdogs and wolves’ speech? No. The motivational dinner table chat in which Kyle’s father tells him “there are three types of people in the world: wolves, sheep and sheepdogs” has a far longer history - although not in Kyle’s memoir. As Slate point out, Hall made up the scene, but the analogy comes from Lieutenant Colonel David Grossman’s 2004 book On Combat. Grossman claims he borrowed it from an “old war veteran”, and uses the phrase in relation to the 9/11 attacks and the Iraq war. It’s since been picked up by gun rights groups, military and police circles. Is it just me or does this sound suspiciously like the Dicks, Pussies and Assholes speech from team America?
  10. Mine has become fairly essential for my job. Fortunately, my work gives me a little extra money each month to help offset the cost of using my personal phone for work stuff.
  11. The wife and I go to quite a few flea markets/thrift stores/estate sales. The weirdest thing I collect are 1960's/1970's era records about trucking. I don't know why I started collecting them, it just sort of happened because I thought they were amusing. The king of trucking records is Red Sovine. He was famous for his technique of talking through a song rather than singing it, telling maudlin stories about truckers, kids, and dogs. He gave us the classic song "Phantom 309." People may have heard the Tom Waits version of it. Phantom 309 was also the inspiration for the character of "Large Marge" in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (Tim Burton's best film). Anyhow, feel free to wrap your brain around these bits of Americana gone by. This ad is all sorts of awesome. I dare you to listen to this and not giggle hysterically at just how bad it is on multiple levels.
  12. As far as truth goes, I can say that owning Chickens has reinforced my previously held conviction that life is not sacred.
  13. I poked around the interwebs this morning and the best article I found on extremism in the US Army or among veterans is this article from Military News.com.
  14. A while back I was browsing through google patents for information on weird old patents of tanks and weapons. Somehow I ended up looking at a patent from 1890 for a "horse shield." Basically, it's a device to keep a Stallion from masturbating. I had no idea people were concerned with horse masturbation back then, but I guess they were. In fact, there were several patents for similar devices. Its funny how human beings take their own weird ideas on what is acceptable behavior and then try to force them upon the animals they live with.
  15. I have three dogs, one of which is a beagle/bull dog mix. He is a ridiculous creature. He was at the shelter for several months, no one was interested in him. My wife felt bad for him so we took him in. He is actually a very good dog, but he is pretty much useless for any practical purpose. As he has gotten older, I fear he will fall down the stairs and hurt himself. Those little bull dog legs are not very practical. Why someone would breed a beagle with a bull dog, I have no idea.
  16. Wow, things getting a bit intense here. In Zinegata's defense, there does seem to be some legitimate controversy regarding Chris Kyle. Since he wrote a book and put himself out there as a public figure, he is fair game. As to the bigger issue of US troops and the volunteer army, I really don't have much to say. I know some really amazing people that have served, and some that are not so impressive. So in that regard it's not much different than most other organizations. I have a friend that served from the late 90's until 2006. He is a very sharp guy, recently ran for city commissioner (he lost, unfortunately). I asked him once about the quality of the individuals in the US Army. He said that in the late 90's when he started, it was pretty high. He then said that by the time he left in 2006, they were, and this is an exact quote "letting in mutants." So there you go.
  17. I have not seen the film. I suppose people like a good war film regardless of who it is about. I will say that I am always slightly suspicious of anything published in the NY Post. It's not exactly the finest of newspapers. Still, interesting response. Earlier today I made a facebook post regarding sniper movies. It was: So snipers have been in the news quite a bit. Guess it has to do with this new Clint Eastwood Movie. Even local steakhouses seem to have an opinion on the matter. Personally, I have not seen the film and I probably won't bother to watch it. If it had been up to me to make a movie about a sniper, it would have been about World War II Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko. I have three reasons for this. 1) She was credited with shooting 309 Nazis. If you are going to shoot 309 people, Nazis are probably your best choice. Those guys kinda had it coming. 2) She became friends with Eleanor Roosevelt. 3) Woody Guthrie wrote a song about her. I rest my case.
  18. No idea really. I felt a bit bad that the interview ended up on my blog rather than where it was supposed to go. The original idea was that there was a possibility that it could make it into a print magazine, but Scout.com pulled the plug on that. The good thing is that at least the interview didn't end up buried in a subscriber only website. And of course having it on my blog has helped me get a lot more pageviews. Too bad I don't have any ads on the page....
  19. I noticed that the search engine is not exactly functional.
