Hi,
The Merkava 2D was introduced to address specific, known weaknesses in the Merkava 2's armour. In September 1997 and October 1997, Merkava 2Bs were hit by 9K111 Fagot missiles fired by Hezbollah. Two Merkavas were penetrated and in each case a crewman was killed. It was clear that Hezbollah were aware of a weakness in armour near the drivers hatch and were targeting that area. Hence the introduction of the Merkava 2 Batash also known as the Merkava 2D.

To be fair, Leclerc has "proper" side armor (even more than Leopard 2A4) at a similar weight. The K2 simply was not build with that requirement.

This is probably a mock up/model of a tank or modernisation for T-80s, elements for which were tested with Object 292 (like LP-83 152 mm gun). Note panoramic sight, new turret with welded frontal armor "pockets", turret busket, changed co-axial MG mount (maybe even different MG), different frontal hull (looks like some of Object 187 hulls).

Seems that the side armor of the K2 is designed to stop 30 mm APDS (or "00 mm" APDS) along the crew compartment and 20 or 30 mm AP ("00 mm" AP) at the rest of the hull/turret.
