    A tank silence would need an absurd volume for the gas to expand into. Interestingly, 7.62 NATO in a 16" barrel and the L44 120mm (per hunnicutt) have almost identical expansion ratios (~5.5, ignoring the substantial pressure difference involved)

    Per hunnicutt it's 11,400 rounds, which is high but not a world away from other contemporaries. M60 and chieftain are both meant to carry 6,000. Just by comparing volume for the rounds, the ratio looks like 1:2.7:5.3 (for .50:.338 NM:7.62, modelling each as a cylinder with L = OAL, D = rim diameter + 1mm to represent the belt links) Sabots are dangerous, but non-saboted rounds are available - IIRC Nick Moran said he carried a full load of M830 on patrol (not M830A1), and the USMC have a proper HE round in service now for the 120mm

    An LPD contributing to a naval engagement seems wrong, but I guess in an ASM fight you only need anti-ship and anti-missile launchers (& datalinks to get firing solutions). It will increase crew numbers, which might sap capability for the primary task (i.e. deliver marines to the beach)

    Volume is a major penalty for a .50 - the ammunition takes up a lot more space. Typical coax installations can take a belt that's several thousand rounds long, and a belt long enough for an equal length of time firing with a .50 would need several times more volume

    Blisc looks OK: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-43818752 There's one blade missing by that guys arm, if the hub lost a chunk then I'd expect it to be fairly obvious. Potentially debris from the first blade loss could have damaged a blisc further back in the engine, but then you'd expect to see more damage to the nacelle

    Section 1 of the report summary: Section 7: Section 10: It's pretty clear. UK alleges a nerve agent was used (and has been pretty consistent that it was an attempt at murder), OPCW agrees. 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate isn't a suitable tool for murder, as you pointed out, and being developed in the 50's it isn't really a newcomer either. My bad, a wikipedia editor got overeager 1) Remembering front-page news from 4 years ago is quite impressive 2) So something else we can blame on thatcher?

    Dude I literally said it in the sentence you quoted. A T-15. And whatever its side armor is, I bet it's a whole lot better than what the BMPT affords, because judging by the position of the grenade launchers, there is physically not enough room for any meaningful amount of armor. The grenade launchers appear to be unconnected to the crew compartment, their box is above the hull roofline. Any side armour protecting the crew will be completely underneath the grenade launchers, not outboard of them

    Wonder if you can double stack tomahawks? Per wiki, some dimensions of interest: Virginia class beam: 10m Trident D5 length: 13.58m Tomahawk length: 6.25m That bulge doesn't look like it's 40% of the height of the hull, so I'd be surprised if a trident fit. Distributed lethality for SSBNs would also probably fall foul of a whole number of treaties, and it'd make the deployment schedule for the SSNs that the US navy has in service quite hectic unless more boat building capacity could be found
