Interesting, could you tell us more? The only things I can find on the english web related to them is some bleating from left-wing press about israeli forces creating sonic booms over disputed territories in '05, and the standard use of serious loudspeakers for crowd dispersal

I look forward to the "contemporary western tank rumble" thread exploding.

General Naval Warfare News/Technology thread.

An SSK chasing an SSN seems a little off to me. Kilo top speed is ~20kn, A-boat can do ~30kn, so the SSN could just leg it. A russian SSN hunting the A-boat sounds more plausible, but those don't tend to come into port very often (so tabloids wouldn't have any evidence they were present) -
The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines
Xlucine replied to T___A's topic in Mechanized Warfare
The turret base does protrude by about 6-12" or so above the roofline (don't be fooled by the fake roof that's stood off the hull, this is visible on the bow gunners hatches), which would save a small but significant amount of weight. Holding a ruler up the screen I figure it's about 0.3-0.6 m^2, so something on the order of a tonne for a 2.4 t/m^2 armour array (random number, corresponds to 30cm solid steel so around the right ballpark). This is just a ballpark for the frontal armour, the upper row of side armour could also probably be dispensed with for a flatter turret saving further weight.- 5,225 replies

The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines

Neat - I hadn't twigged just how far back the hatches were in the turret, I guess that explains how the turret "bulge" is protected frontally- 5,225 replies

Long as the hulls aren't too worn out and you didn't have too much of an IED threat, a CVRT packing spike would provide a fair bit of capability.

This is a good documentary: The sound disappears at times, but it's probably improved by this. The video is the interesting bit - lots of views of the interior of an Akula (NATO: Typhoon), including the enclosed steering position in the sail. It's also an interesting look into the post-soviet-collapse Russian Navy. I was unaware that russia had an SSBN sponsored by a business, Coca-cola columbia class when? -
A Babyoliphant? Bovington also has one, so it must have been a good enough idea to warrant making more than one of them

What are the aluminium tubes with the orange casings in the lower left? Shotgun conversions for the flare launcher possibly, or are those flares?

The mantlet has considerably less protection than that, perhaps the thickness of the turret cheeks is driven by the extremes of the frontal arc instead? There's a sizeable area of mantlet with <150mm protection, which is odd for a tank with a design thickness of 280mm
