Makes sense, no need to hire a helicopter to deliver the explosives. Interesting that they're comparing to a pretty beefy MTU 883. Presumably a 1500-horse diesel would look even worse -

I'm niggling here, but Xi Jinping saying that russia doesn't like THAAD in south korea isn't really proof that russia considers it a major annoyance. Of course Xi would say russia is on their side, same way that every government ever has publicly maintained that their allies agree with them.- 5,676 replies

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44871788 They had to add an extra 10m on a 70m boat, so now it doesn't fit. The beeb also claims that the cost has reached £900mil; so a bit cheaper than a proper SSN from barrow and a hell of a lot cheaper than a modern SSP from australia. Further evidence that SSNs don't really cost more than SSK/Ps, unless you're willing to accept proper poverty-spec componenets -

The mockup behind the M113 is just a mockup (and may bear no relation to the final design). We haven't announced production or a finished design yet, this is just some money for scoping studies and tech demonstrators to determine what we'll have designed for us (and an excuse to start seriously asking to be let into one of the other fast jet programmes spinning up)

On challenger the hole for the mounting stub doesn't go all the way through the hull, and there's a fairly substantial block of steel filling it when the suspension is fitted (also a noticeable bump on the inside). It's not as if you're losing volume from a composite block, I'd be surprised if it made a difference to the base hull side armour A longer swingarm will increase the moment, and so the force on the piston (and add a bit of weight). That'll need either a higher pressure system (adding weight, more chance of leaks and more faff servicing), or a bigger piston (adding weight). You can't assume every system lets you adjust the pressure on the fly. That'll need a super high pressure hydraulic line plumbed out to every unit, which means you lose the benefits of modularity and no hull penetrations (the designers didn't bother on challenger and the mooted abrams suspension last page). Getting the pixies to do it is the easy bit, turning pixies into high pressure hydraulic oil is hard -

I can't find the £700mil budget mentioned in any reliable defence sources, and poking janes (unfortunately on the paywalled bit, the chally 2 profile towards the bottom if anyone has access) gives a value for the budget of ~£240mil (so ~£1mil/tank). MoD spending £3mil/tank on only an FCS upgrade is not going to happen - I bet most of those "defence sources" are from KMW, so of course they'd say their offer was cheaper. The leo2a4 part is a guess on my part, I didn't know there was (emphasis on was now though) that many spare leo2a6s knocking around and the article didn't go into detail
