  1. A Type VIIC u-boat. I'm going to try and call this U-1206. My thoughts on the build: Fuck the pre-albacore hull form Fuck the germans Fuck WW2 And most of all Fuck 1:350 Railings Also, fuck the lack of common allied WW2 submarine models
  2. I wonder how much weight you'd save strapping the guts to a rifle, and if the rifle would still be light enough to be useful as a rifle?
  3. T26 is still under contract to cost about half what the Canadian Surface Combatant will (£1.2 bn Vs C$4.1 bn each), so we aren't that bad (yet)
  4. The new UK OPVs are having issues. We paid through the nose for them, as we were under contractual obligations to keep the yard on the clyde in work, and now it turns out that they need major rectification work before they're ready for service (reportedly to be paid for by BAE, which is a small blessing). It has been reported that they've been formally handed back to BAE, however BAE disagrees. BAE also state: Which sounds a lot like "handed back to BAE" to me

That is odd, facebook thinks the post is public. Maybe this direct link will work? I saw the video on this page, it was posted 22 hours ago
  7. A neat look at the minimum functional foundry. - Recycling car rims is a good idea, those are normally cast so are Al alloys with good casting properties (i.e. silicon-containing, low melting point) - The lack of vent holes leads to some disturbing bubbling in the molten metal in the mold and a fair few holes in the final casting, but it's easy to see why they don't add them - without power tools, removing the sprue & runners gets a lot more difficult. Also note them spooning out the molten material in the sprue, probably for the same reason - The finishing method is interesting. Bare Al for cooking utensils is an unusual choice, given the effect Al has on human nerve tissue, and I can't imagine the paint or filler material being much good for you either It's crazy how far this is from the cosworth process when they're both doing essentially the same thing (freezing molten aluminium in a desirable shape)
  8. 50 years to the day from the first UK SSBN patrol
  9. Are you sure? It seemed to me like they were claiming that this was so mass efficient against shaped charges that more weight could be devoted to KE-optimised armour underneath this
  10. Isn't that just Nozh, but pre-detonated?
  11. The Nebraska State Journal, Lincoln, Nebraska, November 4, 1947
  12. It's pretty similar to the agreements made with the south koreans - no concrete actions of great significance (although repatriating remains from the war is nice), but it's a decent start to a long process.
  13. The US team really win on style points, hopefully we see the other teams following suit next year
  14. How long till the first home-on-radar anti-tank missile? Whether emitting is sensible or not depends on who you're up against, and whether they have suitable detectors (as they'll always see you long before you can get a decent echo, so can manoeuvrer to avoid counter-detection)
  15. Kim really isn't used to that level of media. I like the "photography prohibited" sign in the last picture
  16. Just enough leo 2A6M++(improved) in service&working to look good at competitions

  19. Radial fins can be turned on a lathe pretty easily, longitudinal fins need a mill with a rotary table (or an extruded aluminium sleeve, for a modern design that wants to show off).
  20. The UK lot is from the Queen's Royal Hussars They're also on facebook:
  21. The corners of the cylinder also provide a convenient location to keep the tungsten pellets that get ejected forward, if forward ejecting fragmentation is your thing. On a related tangent, I wonder if you could do fancy stuff as described here to improve airbursting HE? Something like set the blast pattern to spray more fragments sideways and less upwards and down, depending on the angle the round is at due to the rifling? It's a pretty tight timing window, but it's predictable so shouldn't be as hard as reacting to the presence of an aircraft over a similar time period (of course, AA missiles normally have longer to react than that).
  22. Toxn is talking about attempted suicide, which is a different statistic. Papers published on that subject (using methodologies like "count how many people turn up at a hospital emergency department") seem to have a consensus that attempted suicide is biased the opposite way to successful suicide
