Khand-e
Mainly isotope research and testing new methods of isotope seperation. Possibly also medical applications like testing possible new methods of radiotherapy for cancer patients. (the actual devices used if said methods are successful will be much smaller obviously.) Donward
This has been in the news recently at least in my neck of the woods. Bill Gates is partnering with China on a nuclear reactor The nuclear power startup is trying to build a new type of nuclear reactor to harness the power of depleted uranium. Per the glossy website of TerraPower. The design. TerraPower’s Generation IV traveling wave reactor (TWR) offers a safe and economic form of low-carbon energy that meets base load demand for electricity. It offers enormous environmental benefits, high barriers to proliferation, and uninterrupted energy security that significantly address many of the issues faced by today’s reactors. The design. TerraPower’s traveling wave reactor (TWR) is a Generation IV, liquid sodium-cooled fast reactor based on existing fast reactor technologies. Innovations in metallic fuel, cladding materials and engineering allow TWRs to utilize depleted uranium as their primary fuel. These innovations greatly simplify the nuclear fuel cycle by eliminating or reducing the need for enrichment, reprocessing, and waste storage and disposal. Fissile fuel is both produced and then consumed in-reactor, greatly improving the fuel efficiency of the TWR and resource availability for the reactor. Khand-e
So it turns out the 20 MeV Linear accelerator above is a scaled down version of a 100 MeV one also being built for the nuclear industry. Also, while I'm not sure this qualifies as Nuclear in the sense of the forum sees it (in the whole "making bombs and reactors" way), there's also this, which could be why the sudden interest in particle accelerators is popping up for more then just experiments with nuclear isotopes. http://english.cas.cn/newsroom/news/201501/t20150127_135741.shtml

Toxn
I'll get excited if even half of what LockMart says about their approach is true. Damn but that thing has the look of machine design about it.

Collimatrix
Spoke with an engineer yesterday at a charity event. He mentioned that the beryllium layer in bomb cores doubles as a moderator. I was rather surprised by this; I did not realize that modern nuke designs use anything other than fast neutrons.
