  1. Yes that was what I had surmised, the Ukrainians cannot into effort. I've had the pleasure of being on a very big job site in salt lake city Utah for a giant Mormon assembly hall when some jackwagon pierced a tank in the massive tank farm with the forks of his forklift. That shit got incredibly hectic and there was no fire, no explosions, only fucking flying tanks banging off each other and rupturing more tanks which creates more flying fucking tanks LOL!!! Seeing videos like this always kinda give me the shakes as I wound up shimmying between a nice load bearing wall and a heavy scissor lift clutching my hard hat and waiting for the insanity to stop LOL. Maybe I'm a masochist though because I still watch the video clips...
  2. Bronez, Was this typical incompetence or is it looking more like little green Spetsnaz?
  3. That Russian Sherman tanker description of the "mass murder" of their mounts was very poignant. Seriously, the damn Russians are world class purveyors of depressing damn writing. It really was pretty sad though, by the end I felt really bad for those poor tankers. It's truly cruel to make the men who fought their way around Asia in their American tanks to then gut them of any ability to make war and prepare their old friends for a retirement that will see them used up and eventually die as rusted out hulks on some shitty little farm. I mean, we all know that after a war like world war 2 that the swords must be beat into plowshares. But to force the actual crews that fought in those tanks to be the ones to do so, that's just wrong and terribly sad!
  4. Pointy headed... We have spitzer jackass projectiles premade and ready in the event of all out war for national survival and no one told me? WTF... Dick move bro... Dick move
  5. Toxn, Yes, but it had the Meredith effect so all is forgiven
  6. Jesus Sturgeon, I just read the article... I want my 6 minutes back. And then you get to the 14 comments and realize that the majority of Americans, whether pro or anti F35, are dangerously close to functionally illiterate! Sweet baby Jesus! That's the real headline here!
  7. CQB jihad, because apparently in'shallah only applies only at near contact range.... God Allah can be a real dick sometimes
  8. I'm slowly gathering parts for an AR74 with a DIY bump stock but I'm kinda hung up on how exactly I want to do the lower/what aftermarket magazine insertion and removal cheat I want to copy. For simplicities sake and my own sanity I'm only going to use Magpul 5.45x39 Ak magazines rather than try to make it fit every Warsaw pact ak74 magazine ever! Admittedly though, I'll likely be modifying a worst Korean Ak drum to try and make it both lockup and release correctly and make it feed 5.45. If it doesn't come out a monstrosity I'll post it here.
  9. Friends that slay together stay together? Jesus, they take chicken fighting serious in Iraq! Shhh achmed just think of it as a fleshy engorged ear plug...
  10. I build some homely stuff from time to time, but DAYUMMM!!!
  11. Toxn, Swizzlestick... OF DEATH I give you the North American aviation / Morton-Thiokol swizzlestick hypervelocity rocket! 9000 fps, surprisingly light, stupid low projected manufacturing cost per shot, capable of shoulder vehicle and aerial launch. I found what I think might be a follow on project called the Arbalist hypervelocity rocket from the 70's or a bit later too. Weirdly, I seem to have an odd connection and love for weapons projects and vehicles that bear the Arbalest name, or variations on this name. 1. Arbalist hypervelocity rocket 2. Arbalest box wing COIN thing along the lines of OV-10 but sexier 3. Tkb-0249 crossbow/Arbalet... You can't hate this little beast full and semiautomatic ags-17/30 grenades in a drum magazine... For those days when the Barrett just isn't quite enough! Seriously I've thought of this one a lot WRT hilltop ambushers in places like Afghanistan and urban combat both, the ability to lob stuff up over parapets and drop plunging fire down into the rock piles people hide behind to launch PKM ambushes. I'm likely wrong, but to me firing HE up and over the rocks makes more sense than trying to fire into the openings in the rocks using a 240 on a bipod!
  12. TIL from Sturgeon that 5.56x38 FABRL using the AR-2 bullet had a really weak powder load, and that if you really pushed the propellant load you could get 3250 fps from a 10.5 inch bbl using 37 grain AR-2 bullet... I cried a little with hysterical glee.
  13. Conner, The Yugo guns are a weird mix of a bunch of elements as Tito preferred it from what I understand! Using the rifle grenade launchers as an example, they're actually the NATO standard (22mm diameter right guys) rifle grenade interface. That is why my handful of Israeli pattern practice grenades and my nearly ww2 vintage strap a pineapple grenade to a tail fin kit work. Additionally there's some divergent dimensions here and there in Yugo AK's that I've "heard" show at least some Chinese type 56 lineage rather than straight Warsaw pact pattern. I have a splitting headache so please forgive me for any egregious mistakes in this post. On the note of Yugo AK's and Zastava in particular, have you seen the switch barrel switch caliber bulged trunnion guns Zastava built for their Grendel experiments? Very very simple barrel change, and to my eye it looks like the key parts of the system prone to wearing out from repeated installation/removal are simple cheap robust and easily replaceable! In my world this is extremely exciting, and a little vexing because of just how ****ing easy making a switch bbl Ak turned out to be!!! Real WTF? Why didn't I think of this moment!
  14. Indeed, As well as MHTK spinoffs and other fun stuff.
  15. Xoon, Even before I showed up here I was acutely aware of the limits of my knowledge where it comes to all things armored warfare. To say the least coming here has been...humbling I try to be cagey and apply lots of disclaimers to what I say in the armored warfare forum because I know I'm almost guaranteed to be wrong on some of it. If I make mistakes please let me know, I'm here to learn not to teach. On that note, this is why I brought up heavy equipment and UPS trucks.
  16. ROFLMFAO I made a comment on above top secret the other day calling one out for being just that... I also dropped the truth bomb of stealth not being a binary thing. The whole idea that it just works or doesn't work with no middle ground COMPLETELY ignores everything written about stealth by people who know about stealth in the public arena since at least the late 90's! I'm sure several of you are thinking why the f*** do you post on ATS? tradition mostly... It was my home base on the internet since early 2001, and the site I was on that shitty day in September while doing inbound tech support and sales for McAfee. (Weird fucking day, weird couple of months before that! 15 years later and I'm still very conflicted, angsty, and disturbed by stuff that happened that day and the few months before and after) Plus the wehraboo hunting there is like going to texas to hunt feral pigs.
  17. Sturgeon, I genuinely hope you are right and the stuff I've been worried about turns out to be 100% ground less. One thing that has always bothered me is the malicious glee some F35 detractors exude every time word of a problem comes out. I personally still remain skeptical of the plane for my own reasons which range from technical to just plain thinking that the X32 was sexier, but I also don't have the access to know if my concerns are valid. In the mean time I'm choosing conditional optimism for no other reason than the implications of thinking anything else are really damn depressing.
  18. Heresy, I reach up and close the dust cover between shot strings... Because, well... OK I probably just have OCD.
  19. Colli, The Philco Ford method with 3 or 4 documents available on DTIC about it? I personally tend to just call green mountain or Sarco inc and buy blanks or etc... But I also have a CNC lathe. I found one the other day I'm hoping someone from the Russian contingent can link to more information about it. 5.45 AR thing I found this the other other day and decided I need two... My armory is like the land of mutant toys already so why the hell not a tube gun AR74
  20. It is indeed a rifle grenade sight. Not safe to use unless you have the gas cutoff hardware too though! Just because it has one in no way means it has the other. I use mine to launch DIY dummies and occasionally bust out the old adapter set that lets you launch army pineapples.
  21. Xoon, 1. Depends entirely upon the system design, an early hydraulic hybrid car retrofit I know of could sit for at least a week without full pressure loss 2. Again that's going to be wildly dependent upon the system, but if you believe Ford in the early 2000's they they basically quadrupled the mileage of an F150 compared to their V8 offering with a pretty mild hydraulic hybrid combination that was supposed to cost Ford less than $1000 extra to install at the factory in full scale serial production. 3. Going out on a limb here, my guess is that it's similar to why you don't see bobcats much less D9's with all electronic actuators. Also UPS and a few other companies have come out to say that their studies show this as well. From what I understand their logic behind this is relatively sophisticated involving initial capital outlays, availability and affordability of qualified technicians, and matching the hybrid components to expected vehicle service lives and etc. With the final consideration being that a hydraulic hybrid system including energy storage components will have less cubic volume on average. 4. Considering that at least a couple projects are working towards ultracap based energy storage for red dots and holo sights, I'd say no this wouldn't even be a potential concern on a time scale 100x longer than even a LONG descent from a mountain pass. 5. I'm not 100% clear on overall thermodynamic efficiency other than to say that they CAN be very competitive with battery electric hybrids if done right. That's really a fantastically complicated question of the type that I'm just educated enough to know that I'm nowhere near qualified to answer! 6. I've got diagrams of various systems saved various places, but TBH no I don't know exactly how you'd do it. My primary research push lately has been in the brushless DC electric motor area, specifically WRT closed loop machine control and using them as dampers and suspension components etc. All apologies for the lack of concrete answers, I was just really excited to be able to contribute to the conversation here.
  22. Xoon, yes there are hydraulic hybrid systems and they're actually very good. However, the nature structure and requirements placed on "green energy and efficiency" subsidies has artificially retarded hydraulic hybrid research development and deployment. In a hydraulic hybrid system your "battery pack" is called a hydraulic accumulator. This is what would "store" pressurized fluids you don't need right that instant. You can do series, parallel, and other hybrids more or less the same in a hydraulic system as you would in a battery hybrid. You can also do regenerative braking, power mixing, and even regenerative suspensions etc! Personally I can see plus and minus points for each system with hydraulic being more tempting for 50+ ton vehicles At the extreme other side of the spectrum battery less ICE electric hybrid technology as is being worked by a couple countries WRT motor scooters and etc that use ultracaps could be phenomenally useful for everything from exoskeletons to things like the Polaris ATV's. Damnit double edit: WRT brushless motors, you can do some really interesting and amazing things with them these days including using them as parts of your suspension system with adjustable damping and rebound rates on the fly and much more! This is why we see Boston dynamics going from big dog using hydraulics or pneumatics to the demon hellspawn recent development that's half wheeled donkey half great ape!!!
