BTW did you notice the PKM mod ? The barrel is supershort... i've never seen that before, any ideas on why they did that ?

As i understand those guys are going to be involved in CQB, so short PKM is pretty good addition for small sized teams - high volume of fire for suppression, for example. Same reasons why our special forces use bullpup PKPs.

   Battle for Al-Quseir

image

Don't know language, so i'm trying to guess, basically. Part of Quseir was under control of SAA, and plan was to join them.

Spoiler

image

Clearing areas towards enemy main positions and "HQ" buildings looks like was planned to be conducted from Eastern side of the town, using SAA support.

image

Those tightly placed buildings in districts would be a problem to fight through.

image

General plan was to go from S to N and Western flank was to join central push in main part city, where FSA stronghold was.

image

After that - push North from SAA territory in order to finish city clearing.

Problematic aspect of urban warfare in Quseir were FSA and Co preparations and defensive structures made. For example - tunner system and buildings-hardpoints.

image

image

Tunnel system allowed to move quickly between hardpoints without risking exposure to enemy fire:

image

image

image

Tunnel entrances/exits were located inside of buildings.

image

image

image

City had plenty of those prepared areas.

On higher level, Quseir was connected to other FSA&Co-controlled areas.

image

As i understood, SAA and Al-Muqowama managed to cut several supply roads.

image

SAA took several villages and military airbase.

image

image

image

image

Not sure why one was left.

image

image

As my understanding goes, a way to deal with those dense build up districts was to go through them but aboid using main streets.

   FSA and other moderate akbars.

image

Spoiler

image

image

image

They had some toys to play with

image

image

image

Operation started, Al-Muqowama used Vulcan - big caliber but short ranged rockets as artillery support.

image

Spoiler

image

image

image

   Simple Vulcan launchers

   Mortars were also used.

image

More serious one - IIRC those were called Elephants

image

A normal artillery pieces for indirect fire were used as well.

256121

Reason why Vulcan were a thing during urban operations.

763092

Spoiler

image

Heh, can't say what are those stats. Although one thing is obvious - short range and very big payload in one nice rusty package.

image

Vulcans according to footage had timed fuzes (or delayed one?), which allowed heavy rocket to punch through roof or walls of houses (for example those hardpoints connected with tunnels).

image

... and level those buildings thanks to payload being delivered into house, instead of detonating somewhere outside of internal volume, where explosives were more effective and damaging structure.

But because of simple launchers and quickly put together rockets, their accuracy was not exactly high.

image

image

image

After landing (or crashing into structures) those things were not exploding for about ~5 seconds, but after detonation...

image

image

image

Vulcans also were used for direct fire, thanks to relatively light launcher unit.

image

During operation inside of Al-Quseir. Some streets and roads were barricaded, for example with trucks with shipping containers on top.

image

Spoiler

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

Walls between households were frequently demolished to allow to progress without trying to push through open street roads.

Walls of buildings also had paths made through them, to avoid getting out of houses to walk to other part of it/other building.

image

image

image

IED were also a problem. This one was connected to an entrance door of house.

image

image

Rebels storage with big IEDs found inside of it.

image

Note uparmored tactical golfcart on the left. Team is crossing an opening.

image

Al-Muqowama used different technicals and AFVs support in this operation.

image

image

image

image

Tanks also worked on targets in the city from prepared positions.

image

image

image

image

MG gunner again with AKs and secondary.

image

Amount of dust was noticeably enough to make fighters to wear masks.

Looks like to dazzle enemy, a fake radiochatter game was conducted, further North of actual assault path.

image

image

Spoiler

image

Tank support inside of the city. Using mounds made by bulldozers, tank could get angles on enemy positions over walls and some structures.

image

image

Uparmored civilian construction equipment was used to quikcly put walls and other bullet/shrapnel/LOS blocking walls of sand.

image

image

image

Which also are used as firing positions for tanks.

Sometimes simple clothing or sheets were used to make crossings, they were making infantry harder target to hit when running across the road.

image

image

image

image

image

image

   SAA Shilka supporting Al-Muqowama infantry

image

image

   Enemy sniper position.

image

image

UAVs were used for recon and fire correction.

image

Spoiler

image

Some marksmans (i guess) have AR-15 based rifles, not exactly sure why, probably it is easier to find and put optics on them compared to AKs they have.

image

One of those big hand grenade to clear out big rooms.

image

image

Marksman using his secondary weapon to cover other troopers.

The battle for the control over the city of Yabroud and over the smuggling of car bombs from Qalamoun to the Lebanese regions

https://central-media.org/35437/633/وثائقي-#أسرار_التحرير_الثاني...-الحلقة-السابعة

   1st Qalamoun operation.

Qalamoun is a region between Damask and Homs with part of it being in Lebanon, main events happened to south from town Al-Quseir, battle for which was posted earlier. Yabroud is a city in this region, was controlled by numerous factions such as Jaish Al-Islam and Jabhat Al-Nusra, on top of FSA.

Big problem from that region for Lebanon were VBIEDs, that were disguised as civilian cars.
