Jaish al-Islam takes responsibility for chemical attack on Kurds in Aleppo

The leadership of the Islamist rebel group, Jaish al-Islam, has admitted to use “forbidden weapons” in a battle against Kurdish fighters yesterday in a statement released early this morning: “During the clashes one of the Jaish al-Islam brigade leaders used [weapons] forbidden in this kind of confrontations.” While Jaish al-Islam did not specify which forbidden arsenal the group was referring to, this statement comes as rebels reportedly carried out a chemical gas attack through shelling on the Kurdish-held Sheikh Maqsood district in Aleppo yesterday.

However, the Jaish al-Islam spokesman said the brigade commander had “been disciplined” and that the rebel group found the use of such weapons “unacceptable”. The brigade commander was – according to the Jaish al-Islam statement – “summoned to a military court and held accountable”.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish Red Crescent confirmed reports that chemicals were used in Sheikh Maqsood yesterday. “The symptoms of those affected by the attack such as choking made it possible to affirm that they were poisoned as a result of the use of banned toxic gases such as chlorine or other agents. All our patients have similar symptoms,” Doctor Wallat Mamu said in an interview.

YPG also confirmed that toxic agents had been used by the Islamists, according to RIA Novosti. “We confirm the information concerning usage by Islamists, acting under patronage of Turkey, of the poisonous agent in the Maqsood neighborhood of Aleppo. Its poisonous effect have experienced dozens of civilians,” the head of the YPG central headquarters was cited as saying.

Meanwhile, the Islamist rebel group Jaysh al-Islam is formally one of the most prominent members of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) that is representing the Syrian Opposition at the Geneva talks. Both Russia and Syria have repeatedly demanded the exclusion of Mohammed Alloush, previously known as Jaish al-Islam’s political leader, from the negotiations process. Alloush was picked as the chief negotiator for the Syrian opposition in Geneva, which has drawn ire from Damascus and criticism from Moscow.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry has reported observing a rise in terrorist attacks in the Aleppo area over the past two weeks, which it said had killed and injured dozens of people. “In [the] past two weeks, the number and the scale of terrorist provocations in Aleppo have grown significantly – 44 civilians have been killed and 74, including children, have been wounded as a result of these attacks,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Igor Konashenkov.

Rebels make huge gains along the Turkish-Syrian border – Map update

Northern-Aleppo.jpg

A few hours ago, combined rebel forces of the Free Syrian Army, Fatah coalition (Islamist rebel groups) and Jabhat al-Nusra (Syrian al-Qaeda group) captured al-Rai town in northern Aleppo from ISIS troops. Thus, Islamist rebels have now captured more than a dozen villages in less than a week along the Turkish border.

Today’s battle was reportedly heavily reinforced and aided by Turkish artillery pieces that pounded ISIS positions in and around al-Rai throughout the day. Meanwhile, other reports indicate that ISIS fighters have been gradually withdrawing their forces from the region, as to reinforce other vulnerable frontlines. In fact, these advances come despite rebels in northern Aleppo being entirely cut off from the rest of rebel-held Syria, thus creating problems in terms of new recruits, logistics and redeployments.

However, the rebel offensive has come into effect through Turkish support and ISIS commanders down-prioritizing the area. Now, rebels will either try to strike further east along the border or strike southwest and carry out a pincer manuever towards the rebel stronghold of Mare’, thereby cutting off many ISIS fighters and expanding the rebel enclave in northern Aleppo.

ISIS abducts 300 Syrian cement workers in eastern Damascus

2 days ago, ISIS forces attacked several government checkpoints and areas in eastern Damascus. While they were mostly repelled by government soldiers, they did manage to capture the Badia Cement Factory which was still operational at the time.

While some 500 workers were working at the factory, only were kidnapped 300 by ISIS. However, the abducted Syrian workers were predominately from minorities; Druze, Alawites, Christians and Ismaelis. While some Sunnis were also taken, it was only those whom the ISIS fighters deemed to be “pro-regime”.

Nevertheless, breaking reports from al-Mayadeen indicate that 140 workers have already escaped ISIS captivity moments ago. Al-Masdar News is not independently able to verify this, although it might very well be true. Furthermore, locals based in nearby rebel-held Jayroud said they had seen an ISIS convoy on the eastern outskirts of the town. Inside were an estimated 125 captives, likely to be the workers from Badia Cement Factory.

They were headed northwards in direction of al-Busayri in the eastern desert of Homs governorate. Meanwhile, Syrian Arab Army officials have said they intend to conduct a rescue mission to recover the civilians. However, with reportedly moving the captives to ‘secure’ ISIS-areas, their fate is yet to be determined.

ISIS has no where to run as rebels recapture Adwan & Sahm al-Jawlan – Map update

dARAA33.jpg

During the afternoon, Islamist groups of Jabhat al-Nusra, Islamic Front, Ahrar ash-Sham and the Free Syrian Army recaptured the towns of Adwan and Sahm al-Jawlan in western Daraa. This entire area – along with many neighbouring villages – was captured last month by two ISIS affiliate groups, namely the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade and Islamic Muthanna Movement.

Today’s rebel advance comes on top of capturing 5 other villages from ISIS east of the captured towns captured today. However, the entire ISIS-held area in western Daraa was rebel-held just two years ago; reason being that the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade and the Islamic Muthanna Movement defected from rebel ranks to ISIS when the latter was gaining momentum elsewhere in Syria in 2014.

Now, Islamist rebel forces will likely push to capture Tasil (Taseel) which is situated geographically west of Adwan and north of Sahm al-Jawlan. If the rebels can seize the strategic town of Tasil, they will have ISIS cornered inside the province and utterly cut from the Islamic State mainland in northern and eastern Syria.

Subsequently, these events also have ISIS pushed against a wall at the border with Israel and Jordan. As these countries are unlikely to have ISIS fighters pour across their borders, militants loyal to the Islamic State must now either sue for a regional peace deal with the Syrian Opposition groups or fight them to the death.
