   Based on SR-1 Gurza, 2 safeties (grip and on the trigger), single stack mag with automatic chambering of round when new magazine is inserted. Accepted for service.

   RPK-16 drum mag, according to Razvedos it is not good. Not only it have usual problems for high-capacity drum mags (this one is 95 rounds, BTW) such as weight and size, but it is also unreliable if not frequently services and so fragile (Razvedos opens it at 4:20 and shows 4 out of 16 "leafs" being welded back after they broke) that normal use breaks that thing.

This squares with what my little birds had been telling me. The 95 round drum was a disaster and led to the demise of the entire RPK-16, basically.

   Too lazy to search for my post from 2018, translated short look at 1P87 by Kalashism. Very low battery life, bad glass because of heavy blue color and it also gives strong glare from light sources across whole glass. Generally he disliked this sight.

I do remember that the battery life is garbage (manufacturer says 2000 hr on "average setting", but only 100 on max), but the bad glass I hadn't heard about, although I guess that's nothing rare for Russian red dots. 

 

They should have just adapted the Obzor for picattiny mounting. At least with Tritium you don't have to worry about battery life, and I have a hunch that the metal casing would make it more "grunt proof" than the plastic 1p87.

   Sofa experts VK group did several quick posts about Alexander Shevchenko - creator of unusual guns and Kalashoids variants.

 

   1. "Gepard" SMG

 

Quote

   Let's start with the most famous brainchild of Alexander Shevchenko and military unit 33491 - "Cheetah".

 

   The development took place on an initiative basis together with the arms company "Rex" and was completed in 1995. At the exit, a very strange beast turned out, representing a Kalashoid in a pistol form. Moreover, the Cheetah had the ability to fire a variety of 9mm rounds, from the classic 9x18 and 9x19 to the 9x21 with the monstrous 9x30 ("Grom" catridge).

 

   To change the cartridge, it was necessary to replace the bolt group, the return mechanism and the chamber, which is replaceable on the SMG. It is also interesting that with different caliber kits the "Cheetah" has different principles of automatic operation:

   When using bolt groups for 9x18 and 9x19, the automatics wree based on a free bolt, an additional impulse to which was given due to gases from the barrel pushing piston.

   Automatic operation under 9x21 was with a semi-free breech, an additional impulse was also given due to the gas venting into piston.

   In 9x30, in turn, was based on same action like almost any other AK (long piston driven bolt locking on 2 lugs).

 

   In addition, the "Gepard" had an additional automatic safety and on top of this it was capable to fire underwater. Nevertheless, despite the interesting design and a bunch of original features for the Kalashoid, the Cheetah was never purchased by anyone more than in piece quantities — the security forces needed a simple 9x18 / 9x19 SMG, not a modular wunderwaffe.

   In general, it turned out to be an extremely interesting design, the features of which, alas, were of little use in practice, although for the initiative development of a small group of people it turned out very worthy.

   2. "Rys' " SMG

   At first glance, the PP is an ordinary Kalashoid, which is very close to the truth - the only difference from the progenitor is the 9x19 cartridge, the free breechblock and the significantly shortened barrel, gas tube and forend, but in fact there is another interesting feature - it is like and Cheetah, two-medium. Yes, the designers have once again attended to the problem of shooting from a puddle and have developed a special underwater cartridge PSP for this purpose.

   3. "Sea Lion". The other one.

   Continuing the baton "Sea Lion" - two-middle (again) avtomat by Alexander Shevchenko, this time able to shoot cartridges with needle-like bullets. Unfortunately, the ASM-DT assault rifle with the same name, about which several articles have been written, took away all his glory, while there is practically no information on the topic of Shevchenko's brainchild and only a few photos can be found.

   In appearance, "Sea Lion" is an AK with an extended receiver for underwater ammunition. The ability to shoot the usual 5.45 is most likely preserved.

 

 

   4. ADSh "Bars"

   The classic layout was used already, the pistol was also, now it's time for two-middle bullpups.

 

   ADS is the least chthonic bullpup from Shevchenko. In fact, this is the usual conversion of the AKM, modified for the possibility of shooting under water. It is interesting that the PBS-1 was also modified for the same purpose.

   As for the rest, AK "Bars" does not stand out among other bullpads - all the same offset balancing and all the same arrangement of controls somewhere in the ass, promising terrible ergonomics. In general, there is nothing unusual here, unlike Shevchenko's ULTRABULLPUPs, which we will talk about in the final posts.

 

 

   5. "Smerch" bullpup assault rifle

   So we got to Shevchenko's first creation - a small-sized Smerch submachine gun, made according to the layout, which is pathetically called on the Internet ULTRA BULL-PUP.

 

   This sample was planned to be put up for the "Modern" competition - the very one thanks to which the AKS-74U appeared in service. So, as we can see, the "Smerch" magazine was very close to the rear of the receiver, which required a specific bolt-action device. There are no photos of the BCG, but there is information about the bolt itself: it had an L-shape and two lugs. The small rollback space undoubtedly led to an increase in the rate of fire in bursts, but there is no accurate information about the rate of fire due to the fact that there was no working sample.

 

   The operation system itself was based on the long stroke of the gas piston. Trigger mechanism allowed firing single, bursts and fully automatic.

 

   It is interesting that Shevchenko immediately thought about the problematic nature of bullpup shooting for left-handers, so he provided for the possibility of changing the side of the cartridge case ejection.

 

   At the time of the creation of "Smerch" Shevchenko was a cadet of the Tula Higher Artillery Engineering School, and their division was not taken seriously, which is why the development did not go beyond the drawings and the layout mock up. This did not stop our hero, and in the 1990s he showed the world another "ultra bullpup".

 

 

   6. "Shkval" assault rifle

   And at the end of our parade of Shevchenko's creations, another ultra bullpup, according to the good old tradition, is also two-medium.

 

   "Shkval" is a conversion of the AK-74 with a number of features inherent in Shevchenko's weapons.

   Firstly, it can shoot under water, for which a reinforced return spring was used and the barrel was blown with powder gases.

   Secondly, the magazine, as on the Smerch, is located very close to the rear of the receiver, which is why the bolt group was significantly shortened, which shortened the firing cycle and led to an increase in the rate of fire to 800 rounds per minute.

 

   The Shkvala buttstock is retractable, and the fire mode selector is moved forward and is located above the pistol grip. Shkval has three fire modes: single, burst and fully automatic. In burst mode, this brainchild of Shevchenko produces as much as 1800 rounds per minute.

 

   This miracle did not go into the series, like other weapons of our two-medium lover. On this, the thematic day on Shevchenko's creativity comes to an end. An extremely interesting constructor that showed how to properly mock AK.

 

   He has a bunch of strange and original solutions, and some samples, like "Lynx" and "Cheetah", turned out to be very, very worthy for inventive developments. We will conclude this marathon of strangeness and duality with the most appropriate phrase for this topic: Bye, fucking Ihthianders!
