   And another day dedicated to one of most notorious weirdo gun designers/modifiers in current days in Russia - the infamous Obobob.

   Today, a thematic day is announced for the creation of the head of the Scientific and Technological Fund "Medium", an unrecognized genius, an outstanding inventor and simply the owner of the highest IQ on Earth, Vitaly Vitalievich Boyarkin, also known as Obobob.

 

   This person is one of the most (if not the most) weird and funny Russian gunsmiths. This character gained fame thanks to the ingenious modernization of the Kalashnikov assault rifle in the form of the AK-74MB, but in his biography there are mockery of other AKs, the creation of no less outstanding options for the PM mods, as well as shiting out of a bunch of crap brackets.

 

   Perhaps his work would have gone unnoticed if it were not for his attempts to push his breakthrough inventions on the Ganza and other weapon forums, the forum wars with their members, the inability to accept criticism and enviable persistence, which has been repeatedly demonstrated when defending his creations in Internet battles.

 

   In short, sit down more comfortably, today we really have something big. Please remove from screens especially sensitive pregnant children with mental disorders and little kittens.

   Despite the fact that this miracle looks like a typical figment of the fantasy of gunsmiths from the 90s, it became known to the general public only in 2013, when the world has been raging for over a dozen years with rails, small optics, fashionable SCARs with HK416 and other brainchildren of a soulless tacticoolers... In general, stupid americans tried in every possible way to increase the convenience of handling weapons and achieve a greater frequency of hitting targets with expensive rifles and bells and whistles for them, while Boyarkin came up with a much more ingenious way to do this. You just need to...

   And here is AK-74MB. Inside it is just stock 74, all changes are bolt on stuff:

   The first and foremost innovation is the buttstock. Unlike the standard one, it has a trigger and a pull rod on the left side. Yes, the trigger is in the stock, that's right. When the stock is folded, the additional trigger is directly in front of the gun magazine, and the rod rests on the main trigger.    All these useful innovations undoubtedly turn the obsolete AK-74M into a weapon of mass extermination of enemies and common sense. Obobob himself claims that in the bullpup mode, gun becomes much more convenient to use, and the effectiveness of fire from unstable positions also increases. He confirms this with his own tests and positive feedback from the transport OMON fighters, who had been in contact with the AK-74MB for a whole week. It is on these two arguments that Boyarkin builds a line of defense when someone dares to doubt the need for his invention.

   There are a lot of doubts, and there are reasons for this:

   First, when you see this creation, the question "Why?" immediately arises. Despite the active participation of Russian special forces in various CTOs, there have never been massive complaints about the inconvenience of using conventional AKs or demands to issue bullpups to fighters. Moreover, other AK-based bullpups, such as Groza and Shkval, did not take off. However, the AK-74MB itself has been experiencing difficulties with "takeoff" since 2013. In general, the problem that Boyarkin's brainchild is designed to solve looks far-fetched.

 

   A separate issue is the use of the gun by left-handers - the folded stock does not allow to take the magazine with the left hand. Boyarkin himself suggests that left-handed people hold the magazine with their right hand, but at the same time put the gun to their left shoulder. This solution is not only inconvenient, but also creates a new problem: when working indoors, you often have to change the grip from right to left and vice versa - this is critical for inspecting the space around the corner, when a fighter needs to show as little as possible from behind cover part of its silhouette. When using the "left" grip on the AK-74MB, the shooter will have to stick out almost the entire left hand holding the forend of the gun, and this does not have to be done on any other weapon.

   Also, many point to the possibility of deformation of additional front sight and rear sight when the gun falls, but Obobob confidently declares that he himself dropped it on purpose and did not deform anything. Well, let's hope that's really the case.

   So what do we end up with? An extremely dubious thing from a design point of view, which solves a problem that has never been particularly complained about. This was pointed out to Boyarkin by many, both ordinary weapon lovers and actual weapon designers (for example, Alexei Dragunov) together with special forces soldiers ("Karden"), but for 7 years already our weapon genius has continued to insist on his own: AK-74MB is definitely needed, but that's all flaws are far-fetched. At one time, Obobob had the ability to push through his machine gun and in discussions of extraneous topics in the Ganza, clinging to any more or less suitable context.

 

   Nevertheless, despite all attempts to convince the audience of the necessity and usefulness of his invention, it was not possible to launch mass production due to lack of funding. Boyarkin decided to solve this problem in a way as bizarre as the AK-74MB - he created a topic on the Ganza, where he first tried to find oligarchs who would allocate money for production, and then invited everyone to chip in 2,000 rubles each so that his brainchildren would be did go into the series.

 

   Oddly enough, money could not be found in this way. Not only stupid slaves and oligarchs were to blame, but also the state, which allocates money for all sorts of pig farms, but did not finance such a promising project.

As noted by The Economic Times, the cost of one AK-203, produced in India under license, will be 70 thousand Indian rupees ($ 958), which is significantly less than the cost of American-made assault rifles, purchased under an accelerated procedure at 89 thousand rupees ($ 1,218) for a unit.

   As a military-diplomatic source told TASS on Thursday, the project for the licensed production of Russian Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles in India is at the final stage of implementation. "The project is at the final stage. All technical and commercial issues have been agreed," the agency's source said.

   To warm up, let's start with the first sample of the Baryshev autmatic carabine, about which very little is known. It was created in the years 1962-1963 and had action on the recoil of a semi-free bolt. It was fed, of course, with a 7.62x39 cartridge.

 

   There were at least three options: AB-63-1, AB-63-2 and AB-63-3. Photographs of the locking unit, like other internal parts of the machine, have not survived, but most likely it is a forerunner of the locking unit that later Baryshev samples have and which we will talk about in the next post.

   Before considering the complex of small arms designed by Baryshev, it is worth taking a look at the bolt group - this is exactly what everything was started for.

 

   The bolt group consists of a "combat larva", a bolt carrier, a bolt frame and a locking lever, firing is made from the rear sear. When the trigger is pressed, the bolt carrier rolls forward, sending the cartridge into the chamber. The locking lever locks the bore and hits the striker, which sets off the primer, causing a shot. Further, under the force of recoil, the "combat larva" shifts back, pushing the bolt carrier, which also begins its rollback, acting on the bolt frame and the locking lever resting on the ledge in the receiver — the bore is unlocked. Then the spent case is extracted and the bolt group is rolled back to the extreme rear position.

 

   Due to the fact that the parts of the bolt group are not rigidly connected to each other, most of the energy is spent on setting each of them in motion. As it is written in most sources, this leads to a decrease in the recoil force by 2-3 times (in comparison with what, it is not specified, apparently with AK / AKM). This system is used in a number of samples of the weapons complex created by Baryshev.

   Baryshev's assault rifles chambered for 7.62x39 and 5.45x39, respectively. Since the work on the weapon was carried out on an initiative basis, part of the parts and assemblies were borrowed from the AK and modified.

 

   The advantage of these guns can be called a decrease in the recoil force by 2-3 compared to analogues under the same cartridge. This advantage also had an extremely positive effect on the accuracy of burst fire. On the other hand, firing from the rear sear has a negative effect on the reliability of operation, resistance to pollution and the accuracy of single shots.

 

   Also, in comparison with the same AK, the mass of the assault rifle has significantly increased (when compared with folding options). In addition, the user of of Ganza TSE, who was lucky enough to shoot from AB-5.45 and AB-7.62, notes that the resource of the weapon is very low, there have been cases of damage to the bolt carrier after 2-3 thousand shots, and the samples themselves are very demanding to quality of fit of internal parts.

 

   In general, the goal in the form of a significant, I would say impressive decrease in recoil was achieved, but this had to be paid dearly with service resource and ease of production, and the mass also increased. This is one of the reasons why AB-7.62 and AB-5.45 did not reach mass production.

   Due to the fact that Baryshev's technical solutions significantly reduced the recoil, the designer decided to try to create an individual small arms for a rifle cartridge. The output was an automatic rifle AVB-7.62 chambered for 7.62x54R.

 

   This creation feeds on SVD mags with a capacity of 10 rounds, which is clearly not enough for an automatic rifle. Reviews about it are controversial: in the magazine "Bratishka" the rifle is rated highly, while the same TSE speaks of disgusting sensations when firing due to the recoil of a massive 2.5-kg bolt action and the fierce flame that erupts from the barrel when fired.

 

   In general, the output turned out to be an incomprehensible sample: by that time, the military had long since switched to a low-impulse cartridge and did not particularly require an automatic rifle, and if you try to present it as an analogue of the SVD, then here is another problem - weapon is  heavier than a Dragunov rifle, and shooting from an open bolt does not contribute to accuracy. I'm not even talking about the shortcomings described in the post about AB-7.62 and AB-5.45. Most likely, the AVB-7.62 was created as a demonstration that the Baryshev bolt group is also suitable for rifle cartridges.

   KPB and ARGB

 

   We are increasing the caliber together with the experimental Baryshev heavy machine gun. This sample differed from other machine guns chambered for a similar cartridge with an extremely low weight - only 12.7 kg, which dramatically increases its mobility. Instead of a proper tripod, a bipod is used at the KPB. Ammo is supplied from a magazine with a capacity of 16 rounds, which is located on top and is filled from clips. This greatly reduces the combat rate of fire — it is only 50 rounds per minute against 80-100 for the NSV.

   The absence of a tripod complicates firing from prepared positions: the same NSV installed on the tripod can simply be targeted at different landmarks, which will speed up the destruction of targets. With a KPB, this will be more problematic to crank.

 

   An automatic hand grenade launcher can be attributed to the same opera, about which you can read in more detail here. In view of the magazine for only 5 grenades, he would hardly be able to perform the tasks of the AGS, but it could be useful for maneuverable groups.

 

   Nevertheless, the small mass of the machine gun and grenade launcher would allow them to be used in conditions where high maneuverability of subunits is important, so that the KPB and ARGB could well find their niche, albeit a specific one. /.../ On the other hand, such a method of application may be too rare and situational to launch mass production of such weapons.

   In many ways, not only Baryshev's inventions are interesting, but also the path of a designer itself. He worked almost alone, which did not prevent him from creating working models, in some places superior to the developments of large design bureaus, and despite the failures with adoption, he continued his work - Baryshev's hard work and perseverance certainly deserve respect, and he created a very interesting weapons.
