Donward
We probably need a gun myths section. Got through reading some of the standard comments about "Dem Good Ol' Days" when you could stroll down to Merv's Hardware and Tackle and buy a Thompson sub-machine gun over the counter for the low, low price of $250. Alex C.
Ughh. I was shocked that that got posted when this sold for over $80,000 two weeks ago: http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/65/lid/1597 My favorite is "repeal the ban so that these/STG44s/Lewis guns/Belt feds/etc. will be affordable again!". Yes, because the price on firearms with historical cadences and accolades would suddenly be competitively priced with a Del-Ton AR15. Donward
Holy cow. That Thompson was really used by Dillinger? I'm not one of those who wanks over items used by notorious killers but that still has a lot of historical resale value. As for the collectible items, pre-1964 Winchesters 30-30s of which there are literally millions knocking around start at a $1,000 plus and skyrocket from there. Like you said, somehow a Stg44 that was pried from a Nazi's dead grip (cue heavy breathing from Wehraboos) is suddenly going to go for the price of an AK-47 is absolutely fucking ridiculous and shows that a significant portion of the firearms community... probably shouldn't be allowed to own guns. With that said, if some automatic weapon production/resell was allowed again, you'd probably see a drop in value in some of the more commonly available weapons that are still produced today. But they sure as hell ain't making 1920-something Tommyguns wielded by bootleggers anymore.
Sturgeon
This is one of those RIA things. The only thing they guarantee in their auction is the headline, which is this:Historic Gangster Era Colt Model 1921 Class III/NFA Thompson Submachine Gun Confiscated from a Bank Robber by Dayton, Ohio Police with Documentation, FBI Case, Drum and Stick Magazines Note that the form registration dates to Sept of 1934 (immediately after the passage of the NFA), but the item was actually captured in May of 1930. Dillinger was in prison until May of 1933, so it couldn't have been his gun. RIA is trying to play off the "September of 1933" date as the gun being captured from Dillinger after his September 22nd arrest for robbing an Ohio bank, but it's actually a September of 1934 registration date.Basically, Rock Island strikes again. But whoever bought it did buy a Gen-You-Ine 1930s gangster Thompson, just not Dillinger's.
Sturgeon
Note that RIA's blog clarifies the nature of the gun to a considerable degree, so really it's just their auction listing department that's too aggressive and a little scummy. Donward
Ah. I literally just read the first paragraph or so of the listing in between scarfing lunch while pulling up my folks' bathroom floor tiles. Pretty scummy indeed. Alex C.
Regardless of the gun's past, that is to say even if Joe Blow ordered it from the Sear's catalog, it would be worth a considerable amount of money in that condition with the case and accessories. Donward
I daresay repealing the NFA will make these historic firearms less affordable since you'll have multiplied the potential buyers pool a hundred times over or more. Sturgeon
Well, anyone over the age of 21 can buy these firearms, because they are transferrables.

An open registry would ding them marginally at worst. What it would do is preserve existing historical examples, as one could now make or obtain a just as functional, but "new" example for recreational shooting. However people would be in for a shock when they realized what a now "affordable" FN MAG would cost (when the unit price for the US military is over $7,000 and Ohio Ordnance charges $14,000 for single unit sales). Hell, people are bitching that the repop FG42s aren't free.
