Collimatrix Posted November 28, 2016 Report Share Posted November 28, 2016 For those who don't know, this was Ling-Temco-Vought's entry into the VFX carrier fighter competition. Grumman's entry, which would become the F-14 Tomcat, was the winner. This gentleman did a fetching portrait of the Vought Vagabond (as it would have been called) in Jolly Rogers colors, and brief alt-history blurb where the Vagabond beats out the Tomcat to become the US Navy's next fleet defense fighter: I'm curious if there would have been any problems with mounting the sidewinders on the intakes like that. Sidewinders fire directly off the launch rails: So the smoke plume of the missile's rocket motor would be starting right next to the intakes. I've been looking for a good account of the TFX and VFX programs and entrants, but so far I have not found anything really comprehensive. There's a hell of a lot of ink spilled on LWF and ATF, but writers seem indifferent to the origin stories of the mighty Eagle and Tomcat!
