Yuri Lyamin about SSNP.

http://imp-navigator.livejournal.com/628708.html

Quote

In recent years, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) has been an active ally of the Arab Socialist Revival Party ("Baath") and Hezbollah in Syria and Lebanon. Detachments of the SSNP Party militia  (its name is usually translated as "Eagles of the Hurricane", in honor of their emblem - stylistic image of the whirlwind / hurricane) were organized in Syria after the war began to support the Syrian army in the fight against the militants.

The SSNP is one of the oldest parties in the region, founded back in 1932, and they historically rejected any Arab or Islamic unity. The founder of the party, Antoine Saada, came from an Orthodox family and advocated the unity of the peoples of the Levant and Iraq, separating them from other Arab countries. In his dreams was the creation of the Great Syria from the Mediterranean to Persia and from Turkey to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. For more than 80 years of the party's existence, they have experienced and went through plenty of events, on their account, attempts of coups, active participation in civil wars and fighting with Israeli troops in Lebanon, etc.
Although the SSNP is a secular party and there are many representatives from different confessional communities in their ranks, they still rely primarily on support among the Orthodox communities of Syria and Lebanon. Not surprisingly, they participated in virtually all battles, when militants tried to attack the Christian cities of Syria, such as during the spring battles in the north of the province of Hama. And now part of the SSNP forces are involved in the fighting in the eastern provinces of Ham and Damascus.

@Collimatrix, @Bronezhilet would probably like idea of Greater Syria. It is like Yugoslav Empire, only with more arabs.

Dispatch From the Middle East: U.S. Buildup All About Iran

Pretty good analysis on situation in Southern Syria and US involvement there.

Quote

DAMASCUS – As the drive to push ISIS out of its remaining territories in Syria and Iraq rapidly advances, the U.S. and its allied forces have entrenched themselves in the southeastern Syrian border town of al-Tanaf, cutting off a major highway linking Damascus to Baghdad.

Defeating ISIS is Washington’s only stated military objective inside Syria. So what are those American troops doing there, blocking a vital artery connecting two Arab allied states in their own fight against terrorism?
